To The 80s-90s Lost Classics Rate!


Why lost classics?
That’s easy to tell:


The songs we bring you enjoyed huge success in (parts of) continental Europe but were mostly ignored in the UK and the US.


Sadly, most of them were still too successful to compete on PJOPS / PJ Retro.


Between the endless complaining of being vetoed again and mourning that no-one will ever listen to these songs on their PM chat - Berserkboi & Filippa gave birth to this rate concept!


Sorting through a massive list of songs from our childhood, we selected the tracks that fit the following criteria:


i) Palatable to PopJustice at large
ii) Undeniable commercial success outside UK/US
iii) Unlikely to appear in any other rates or contests
iv) Non Top 10 hits on the UK or US Singles Chart


Sadly, this still left us with hundreds of tracks to choose from - so we ensured diversity in sound, language, career trajectories and cultural significance were key criteria to benchmark against. This gave us a great range of music - and plenty to talk about as we start counting down to songs!

Oooo great idea. Lots there I don’t know. A few I do only because they’ve been in PJOPS rates of old and a few others only because they are by western acts.

I think the Ofra Haza and Peter Schilling songs are fairly well known in the UK and I think Major Tom was even a minor hit in the US? In those days people could even have hits in their native tongue - like Nena and Falco.

I wonder why the UK needed an English version of 99 Luftballons but the US didn’t?

The success in the US happened rather accidently. Christiane Felscherinow was in the US promoting the movie "Christiane F. - Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo" and was in a show by a guy called Rodney Bingenheimer asked which songs she liked and she chose 99 Luftballons. And the guy liked it and kept playing it. That's what I read in Christiane Felscherinow's biography ...
