The 80s-90s Lost Classics Rate - Goodbye Wes! :'-(

He/Him
Herbert Léonard's another artist I didn't know anything about before entering this rate and even though I kinda like Pour le plaisir in a background-music-kinda way, I don't think I'm going to delve any deeper into his discography. The French chanson isn't really anything I'm interested about, but I did like reading that writeup though!

Flemish singer Jimmy Frey covered the song in 1982, but Met wat geluk didn't do anything on the charts over here. The cover though?

Art!

Und ich düse, düse, düse im Sauseschritt und bring die Liebe mit ...
(And I dash, dash, dash in high speed and bring love along ...)

Seit 2000 Jahren lebt die Erde ohne Liebe. Es regiert der Herr des Hasses!
(For 2000 years the earth has been living without love. It's reigned by the lord of hate!)

We do not need any love on this planet. Tötet Codo, vernichtet die Liebe.
(We do not need any love on this planet. Kill Codo, destroy love)

Denn die Liebe, Liebe, Liebe, die macht viel Spaß, viel mehr Spaß als irgendwas.
(Because love, love, love is much more fun than anything else)

#60

DÖF - Codo
Picked By:
@Filippa
Credentials: 1x Gold in Germany (more than 300.000 copies); #1 in Germany, Austria, The Netherlands, Belgium and #4 in Switzerland
Average Score: 6.1932
Highest Score: 9.3 @Untouchable Ace
Lowest Score: 1 @If You Go

Some say that the lyricist Joesi Prokopetz (one quarter of DÖF) invented Austropop, because he wrote the lyrics of one of the most important songs of this genre at the age of 19. Very thoughtful and interesting lyrics about rumours and prejudices ..

But this song was a slip, it was silly and senseless, he said in an interview. They (Prokopetz and Tauchen, the two Austrian guys of DÖF) were young and not very serious when a guy from a record company urged them to do something. When they presented this and the guy was not very convinced, they got help: the congenial German female members – sisters Annette and Inga Humpe - were brought in. Annette flew to Vienna, found the story (earth has been reigned by the lord of hate for 2000 years, Codo, an alien, flies in and saves the earth by bringing love along and back) of the song incredibly funny and wrote this song together with our two Austrian no-goods. Inga sang the catchy ABBA-like chorus with those amazing harmonies (not sure if Annette is part of or if it's Inga all alone). If you ask me it's mostly this chorus that was the key to the success, but the funny story and that they didn't take themselves very seriously didn't hurt either ...

DÖF – Deutsch-Österreichisches Feingefühl (German-Austrian Sensitivity) - was a shortly lived project because the success of this song wasn’t reproducible and to be fair no-one aimed at that.

Prokopetz is apart from being a gifted lyricist not of any interest, Tauchen sank into oblivion after that project, but the two Humpe sisters are worth more than one further look. Both had an interesting music career. Inga as singer and Annette as singer, writer and producer. I’ll add some of their work

What did PopJustice think?

@jtm (6.9) Hahaha the fuuck (.gif)

@DominoDancing (7) Humpe in action! Great chorus, but the rest is just a bit too silly. I can deal with camp, but this is going slightly too far.

@TéléDex (6.5) I don’t know where I endured this last. Not that memorable, I’m afraid.

@Eric (5) I just don't know what to make of this

@Phonetics Girl (5) Has a lot of potential but ultimately misses the mark, sorry!

@WowWowWowWow (8)
kGk2p5Y.gif

But um... weirdly it kept my interest?

@Filippa (9) This song is fun! And I love the chorus. Love conquers everything, didn’t you know that?

@Epic Chocolat (8,3) I really appreciate how intelligible the lyrics are

@daninternational (4) This was a hit somewhere? At least the chorus is nice

@pop3blow2 (6) What is going on, here?! The video looks like a set for Mystery Science Theater 3000, which I appreciate.

@MilesAngel (8) 1980's futuristic Europop at its best. So kitsch. I love the female singer's part and the funky guitar.

@berserkboi (4.8) Robot realness is fine, but I’d need more of those beautiful female vocals to really buy into it!

DÖF – Codo (1983)

Ideal (Annette Humpe with band) - Blaue Augen (1980)

Ich + Ich (Annette Humpe + Adel Tawil) – Stark (2007)
Annette doesn’t want to enter the stage anymore as she feels too old.

Humpe & Humpe (Annette & Inga) – Careless Love (1987)

2raumwohnung (Inga Humpe with Tommi Eckart) – 36grad (2007)

The context around this track was a fascinating read @Filippa! This was a full discovery for me as no part of the song sounded familiar at all. Thanks for picking it! It is so true to the spirit of the Retro Song Contest (where we first thought of doing this rate together) that there is something bizarre to experience! With that in mind, and understanding what the project was about - I wish my score had been a little higher!

Oh wow! This must be a @berserkboi record low!!!

I'm not a huuuge fan of the song, but the Humpe sisters had their hands in a lot of amazing pop music throughout the years, some of which @Filippa has thankfully already linked to and some of which must be reserved for future song contests (psssst)!

You'd think that was my lowest score ever but I have a 2.5 in the Pixie Lott Rate, and I think @WowWowWowWow brought a Nickelback track to a rate and that actually got a 0 ddddd

(I am a lot harsher in rates than I am in Song Contests)

It’s true, I remember it well.
@berserkboi (0):
Everything wrong with ‘rock’ music in one song! Return to the depths of hell from whence you came!
Also for the record, it was a rate of all the songs that peaked at #2 in the UK from 2000-2009, berserky makes it sound like I chose the song of my own volition!!!

Bonkers theory 1: Codo is the prototype song for all later rap songs with a strong female chorus.
Bonkers theory 2: The Humpe sisters have been created in a lab. Their influence on pop is unreal. Name any successful German pop product since 1980 and chances are that they have been involved.

A few weeks ago I was having lunch at Stuttgarter Platz in Berlin when Anette -who has just turned 70- walked by. She looked great!

By the way the guy from the record company is called Markus Spiegel.
Markus Spiegel, despite having such a German name, was born in Poland, founded his own record label in the end of the 70s and is maybe the most important music producer Austria had in the 70s and 80s. He was the one who recognised Falco's potential and accompanied him all the way ...

Codo was actually released under the pseudonum Tauchen Prokopetz over here, but now the song's known to be performed and released by DÖF. And everybody's absolutely right, as the Humpe sisters are fucking fabulous.

I remember the song being covered by a group named Kosmos in the mid-90s, featuring vocals by Mary K. because it was featured on some random dance compilation someone I used to know had given me.

The song's been covered in Dutch too by a singer named Sandy in 1982 for her Rock en Roll album.

Hilarious, for all the wrong reasons.

Young Deenay – Walk On By
Picked By:
@Filippa
Credentials: 1x Gold in Germany (more than 200.000 copies); #5 in Germany, Austria, #9 in Switzerland
Average Score: 6.2591
Highest Score: 9.8 @berserkboi
Lowest Score: 3 @Penguin, @Ana Raquel

This song is an exception in many ways.
In this rate it’s an exception because it doesn’t quite fulfil the requirements and because of this song we have a singer featured twice.
In real life it’s extraordinary because hello! we’re talking about Austria / Germany in the 80s / 90s here. It’s a man’s world … It’s significant that I had to look hard for successful music by women.
Young Deenay stood out for me because as one of the few female rappers of this period and that she had a guy singing the refrain (in the background). That she paved the way for the guy in the end (first song: Young Deenay, second song Young Deenay ft. Sasha, third song Sasha ft. Young Deenay …) didn’t take me by surprise. She sadly couldn’t repeat her success without Sasha.
But music wasn’t the only career path Fatima Napo aka Young Deenay took. She studied psychology and published a scientific work about why our western psychology is not suited to explain the feeling and the behaviour of people of African origin in 2008.
So, I hope Fatima is still “defying gravity” (or living her extraordinary way despite our rules of society) in such a positive way! She was definitely an idol for me.

What did PopJustice think?

@MilesAngel (5) The rap is quite good although some moments are a bit strange. I like the singing parts best.

@Sprockrooster (5,0) Coolio found suing for this instrumental.

@Penguin (3) Nothing-y.

@DominoDancing (7) Another one I don't actually remember. Let down by the chorus which is just sooooo sedate.

@WowWowWowWow (6.5) Was Sweetbox busy? Drop the male vocals and we might be in business! Although Wikipedia says that Young Deenay is one of the people who helped launch Sasha's career so maybe we are best friends now??

@Filippa (8) I always liked the reversed roles.

@daninternational (5.5) The verses are stronger than the chorus, but both are a bit weak tbh

@berserkboi (9.8) I remember loving Young Deenay back in the day!! This, Wannabe Your Lover and I Still Believe - A Singles Run!! Also is that gorgeous Sasha on background vocals?

@Eric (6) Another charming video…

@jtm (8.8) This is so weird, but the chorus is amazing.

Young Deenay never reaching absolute stardom in at least the UK & France (huge sales markets at the time) is a big crime! I still love that trinity of greatness as much now as I did (gasp!) 20 years ago!! To hear that she went into Social Sciences and became iconic in that sector as well though really warms my heart! Queen @Filippa featuring a fellow Queen in the best possible way!

Sadly, this also means a cut I have been dreading is next as my first 10 is gonna bite the dust....
