The 80s-90s Lost Classics Rate - Goodbye Wes! :'-(

This is easily one of my biggest guilty pleasures on Eurodance (despite the utterly horrendous lyrics). I shouldn't like this as much as I do, but well what can I do. Not surprised to see living legend Eric as my 10 partner!

Now leave my hardcore sensation Blümchen alone.

Ugh, I HATED this and the fact that they got some well respected people to be associated with this annoying brat. Mixes by Morel, Levine and Eckart?! How much money must have been blown at them to phone in some cheap, by-the-numbers-mixes?!
I had no idea about the Humpe connection, but as I said a few days ago: They had their witchy-fingers in everything, so no need to be surprised.
I was cackling at the realisation, that he had a 2nd album of "unreleased demos", which never saw the light of day. POPJUSTICE served!

Absolutely! Blümchen is sensational. Sad to see this go, it was a bright spot amongst a lot of the slower ones for me. I love our 10 pairings (and quite often low score pairings too) - taste personified!

Great write up of the genre @Filippa - for me I'd possibly pin the decline of Eurodance more around the 2009-10 mark once peak Cascada had passed. I'm very intrigued to explore the origins in 1980s Central Europe and Germany - good potentials for PJ Retro!

"Shut Up (and Sleep with Me)" and "Herz an Herz" are my bets for the next two songs to leave.

Now leave my hardcore sensation Blümchen alone.

am looking forward to Blumchen getting the boot.

Absolutely! Blümchen is sensational.

So did I lead you astray or does Blümchen really have to go?
Well I didn't lead you astray ...

.... but Blümchen is safe for another round.
It's an act, @berserkboi and myself have two opposite opinions ....
No, he didn't tank them, I did ....

It's Nana, who started with Eurodance and stayed close, if you ask me ...

Nana – Lonely

Picked By: @Filippa
Credentials: Platinum in Germany (+ 500.000 copies), #1 in Germany, Switzerland and Romania; #2 in Austria and Denmark
Average Score: 6.4114
Highest Score: 9.7 @berserkboi
Lowest Score: 2 @Filippa

Ghanaian born Nana Kwame Abrokwa is a German rapper and DJ performing under the pseudonyms Nana and Darkman. He came to Germany at the age of 12 after the divorce of his parents. He claimed that he was discriminated and bullied in school. So, he learned to defend himself. At the age of 20 he hit a Turkish woman and a guy who tried to protect her with a baseball bat. He was sentenced to prison but got pardoned because of his good prospects and because of his beginning musical career.

At the end of the 90s he was very successful in the German speaking countries. Whereas "The Kelly Family" attracted the little girls and their mothers, Darkman / Nana was a hit with the little boys and their fathers … he was everywhere for a little while. With his two most successful songs he was said to have sold more than two million copies. But the musical career was shortly-lived and he withdraw from the public.

As "Sin With Sebastian" he is back in 2020. After his musical career he apparently studied international management, but what he did with this remains a mystery (at least for me). In 2020 he recorded new music and wants to write a book about what happened (the hitting) and what he learned from this. I don't think I will read it, but it could be interesting to get some background information.

What did PopJustice think?

@jtm (6.8) This feels so much like something that would only be a hit in Germany and exactly nowhere else

@Eric (6.5) I like the video and the ;'laid back' (for want of a better word) vibe of the song

@DominoDancing (4.5) Hadn't heard this in 20 years. It's not good, is it? That rap has no flow at all.

@Filippa (2) “Everybody’s tripping on me …” That’s the only decent part. I’m sorry this is so boring?

@WowWowWowWow (6) This was ... a journey.

@Epic Chocolat (4) Filler track on a 90s Europop compilation. Pass.

@daninternational (3) Bold move to start with an incredibly repetitive extended chorus. Bolder to go into a bad rap. Now who is this dude? This is a strange experience

@Phonetics Girl (9.5) That chorus is just undeniable!

@MilesAngel (5.5) I really like the singing parts but the rap parts are just okay.

@berserkboi (9.7) This is so gorgeous! I love when Hip Hop had this vibe!

Jokes about locking him up for his lousy rapping, when a judge lets him off the hook for beating up folks with a baseball bat, are certainly appropriate in his case?!
I've thought about this pardonation for a while. I feel if you do something seriously bad you'll have to pay the price for that. But I've come to the conclusion that I am wrong with that, our judiciary-system isn't about revenge, it's about protecting others and reintegrating. And if so it was right to let him off the hook. As far as I know he didn't commit another crime and he led a perfectly fine life. Who knows what would have happened if he had gone to prison?
I just hope he had to pay the victims some compensation.

Shall we begin with Part Un of Cinq(!!) of @Filippa 's revenge?

David Charvet - Should I Leave
Picked By: Berserkboi
Credentials:
#3 France (20 Weeks On The Chart), 500,000 Units SOLD, Certified PLATINUM by InfoDisc, #6 Belgium
Average Score: 6.570
Highest Score: 10 @berserkboi
Lowest Score: 3 @Epic Chocolat

I am inclined to call it a success that David Charvet avoids last place here considering that’s where he ended up when I sent him to PJOPS many moons ago! I call that round The Betrayal of @Sprockrooster and @londonrain, and the rise of Queen Filippa (fun fact, Filippa’s entry from that round is here too!!) Interestingly enough looking at the Highest and Lowest scores - Mr. Charvet had a way of really dividing the “French” voters!

Maybe Epic Chocolat got oversaturated with the song in France whereas in Mauritius since it barely got much Radio Play, I was always at the edge of my seat watching TV, hoping they’d play it in between programs when one finished earlier than anticipated! For some reason Should I Leave was used for that a lot, despite the Music Video not being available on YouTube for very long when it gets uploaded. The current upload dates back to June 2020, and I think that’s the longest an upload of the Music Video has lasted from memory.

One of the reasons I included Should I Leave (other than giving this beautiful song some PopJustice) was that it reflected the Actor turn Singer trope that has been so commonplace since the 80s. We mostly stan the ladies here with this but David Charvet gives us an unusual spin on it - navigating two successful US Shows (Baywatch & Melrose Place) while making his stamp on music in French(!!) of all things!

Pre-Social Media, I remember my friends and I were shocked to find out that he could not only speak French, and sing in the language - but that he was actually French himself! - A twist I tell you! Taking full advantage of the potential for crossover success, Universal Music Group offered Charvet a 5-Album contract right off the bat, and he moved back to France in the late 90s to focus on his music career, leaving a pretty lucrative Acting career in America behind.

I suppose if your passion lies in Music, that’s the right thing to do - though sadly the anticipated success was not maintained. Beyond Should I Leave being the bonafide hit it was - the only other Top 10 hit he would score was Leap Of Faith 5 years later. It looks like Universal gave David the time to release a second album he was happy with but without the exposure of being in a high rating TV Show and the prolonged release - the sophomore slug definitely hit, with the Leap Of Faith album not even cracking the Top 20 in France.

The lesson to learn here - if you are an actor/singer, make sure your face is on TV while you release music, or if you put acting behind you - be like Kylie and saturate the market with heaps of music in the early years of your music career! We’ll always have Should I Leave though! Many of you were ambivalent towards the song but that beautiful melody on the guitar with the soft strings in the verses sound so beautiful to me! That outro is also one of the most glorious put to Singer/Actor careers I will say!

What did the PopJustice crew think of this one?

@jtm (5.1) spills all the Tea! - Oh my god his eyebrows. And the way this screams actor with popstar ambitions. The song is not up to much. The production is great, especially in the final chorus, but the chorus itself is very bland. I didn‘t know this song, but I do now remember coming across Charvet once with his later flop single Leap of Faith at which point he somehow channelled bargain bin Enrique.

@saviodxl (6.1) only marginally inflates his score with what is on offer here - Handsome guy with acoustic guitar is predictable and dull today and was predictable and dull back then. Kudos for the verses in french and chorus in english tho. @WowWowWowWow (7) brings real life into it to show how ahead of his time Mr. Charvet really was! - But you did leave, David. You left your beautiful wife Brooke Burke this year. What the hell? And why do you look like a 90s Sebastian Stan? And why is that somehow my aesthetic??

@Filippa (7) is giving me Teenage Girl Of The 90s Realness (it’s true - this is pretty much me and many songs I almost picked! Dddd) - Sometimes a good chorus and a handsome guy are enough. @daninternational (3.5) demands more French which I am totally on board with (though Devrais-je m’en aller doesn’t sound so lyrically pleasing) - Why is the title in English, but lyrics are French? The chorus is definitely the weakest part :(

@Eric (8) is on to David’s schemes! Ddddd - Very glad the Spotify version was geoblocked - he's gorgeous! @DominoDancing (6.5) came into this, and I’d imagine Roch Voisine since they got the same score a little too late to have eye candy inflate his score - Eh, generic male model look of the 90s paired with an equally generic MOR ballad.

@berserkboi (10), i.e ME! Should Be Happy This Was Unlocked! - A stunner of a song, let’s hope it does not end up in last place again! @MilesAngel (5) channels their teenage self and I am all for it - David himself gets a point. But this is just an average boyband song. The best part is the last minute.

@Sprockrooster (7.5) relates back the ways in which Mr Charvet changed many an Adolescent Gay Man’s journey, which I totally relate to also - with fun puns! - David Charvet has the honour to be the second artist I bought a single from (after The Cardigans' LoveFool). That one was Leap of Faith. There is quite the gap in years between those two, but let me say I was tempted to get the online content from mister Charvet for fans only when they put the CD single in the computer (CD singles were not really my thing to buy). Little closeted me needed this in his life. Leap of Faith this is not sadly - aside from that amazing outro, so I wish I could have supported him harder, like he supported me hard in the past.

Mr. Pretty In Action!

Here is a song I have wanted to send to Retro for a loooong time, but never took the plunge after David scored last place!

The aforementioned Leap Of Faith/Jusqu'au Bout

Just caught up today and everything was going really well for me until the most recent elimination! Should I Leave (8) is a cute sort of sentimental I can get in the mood for. It was on the better half French Male Vocal songs in my book (though a lot of them were pleasant).

I really expected Blümchen to be the song with the 0 and 11 when @berserkboi first posted the list of 0s/11s!

Florent Pagny - Savoir Aimer
Picked By: Berserkboi
Credentials:
#1 France (9 Weeks, 19 Weeks Total in Top 10), 1.2 Million Units SOLD, Certified DIAMOND by InfoDisc, 35th Best Selling Single Of All Time in France, #1 Belgium
Average Score: 6.577
Highest Score: 10 @berserkboi
Lowest Score: 4 @dancingwithmyself @Ana Raquel

Savoir Aimer is a song I had wished I could have brought you all in PJOPS a few years ago, but the reality of it being vetoed came crashing down upon me when I got the verdict on Belle - which had similar credentials. Sadly despite this song only hitting it massive in just two countries - it wouldn’t pass in a million years when we are looking at that level of achievement! Savoir Aimer may be our biggest commercial loss yet (EDIT - my lovely co-host reminded me about a certain After-Ski anthem so this is not quite right).

When compiling tracks for the Lost Classics Rate - Savoir Aimer was always due to be selected for all the above reasons, but mostly because it was a song that marked a turning point in my appreciation of music. As a teenager who started paying better attention to lyrics, vocal ability, intention etc - Savoir Aimer showed me all that music could be. The lyrical content was especially compelling, speaking of finding happiness in loving others without expecting anything in return - letting go of the past and continue on one’s journey with an open heart (a huge reality to a 13 year old gay boy growing up in a country where homosexuality was illegal). Combine this with the music video where Florent expresses the lyrics in French Sign Language and the whole thing becomes one of the most powerful moments of Pop Culture I have ever experienced.

The commercial success of Savoir Aimer was also matched with critical acclaim, winning the French equivalent of the Grammys (Victoire De La Musique) in Best Male Vocals and Best Music Video. The parent album also went on to sell 1.8 Million copies, staying on the French Charts for 82 weeks! Florent Pagny was already a fairly successful artist prior to Savoir Aimer but the impact of this song will definitely stay with us longer than my lifetime!

As I was not too familiar - I went on a little expedition to find out some fun facts TM for today's fallen star, and came to know Pagny has released music in French, Italian, Spanish and English, and he is the 17th best-selling artist of all time in France! Pagny actually started his career as an actor (David Charvet had some competition with this after all!)

What did PopJustice have to say here?

@jtm (6.3) praises the video over anything else - The video is a VFX orgy. @berserkboi (10) says it all really dddd - I remember even as a boy everything about this felt like a moment! So significant in the lyric, the delivery, that music video (!!), the message, the melody, the instrumentation - incredible! @daninternational (7.5) does not hate this Male French effort - colour me shook! - nice enough, but could be a bit shorter. Will someone give @DominoDancing (5) the bops already??? - Once more: Tasteful. But boring.

@Epic Chocolat (7.8) gives me extra insight I knew nothing about, since I never really investigated Florent’s career very closely. @soratami will be interested in this also! - What I appreciate in Florent's career are the steps, the milestones. "Savoir Aimer" is an important one. After his breakup with Vanessa Paradis, he went through a personal and professional slump. This song is a return to form. With a competent writing team, Florence/Obispo, the cover art by his new love, a new look, he had a new life.

@WowWowWowWow (5.5) quotes me, though I wouldn’t say this is the right song for that! Dddd - For the first time, and probably not the last time, in my commentary, let me take a page from one of our excellent rate hosts and say... pas pour moi! @Filippa (6) knows there is something special there - I can feel the passion.

@MilesAngel (6) shows that the Music Video deserves all the accolades, really breaking linguistic barriers - This is pleasant with nice piano but a bit bland. Video is great. @Sprockrooster (8) may feel a little terrible using bland after knowing the context of this one - That outro really sells that otherwise boring and bland song.

A couple of his big hits, which have helped him become the best seller he is:

A song with a Lady we have represented here!

Garou, Patrick Fiori, Daniel Lavoie - Belle
Picked By: Berserkboi
Credentials:
#1 France (18 Weeks), 60 weeks on the charts - Top 50 for 49 weeks, first song by a trio to achieve a #1 in France, Best-Selling Single of 1998 in France, 3rd Best Selling Single Of All Time in France, 2.2 Million copies sold, #1 in Belgium (6 Weeks), Best Selling Single of 1998 in Belgium, Most Successful Song in Belgium since 1995
Average Score: 6.632
Highest Score: 10 @jtm
Lowest Score: 3 @soratami @Ana Raquel

One cannot really argue with these achievements, hey? The French/Belgian public well and truly stanned! Here’s a song I was all set to stan just as much as them, and give a full 10 too until a recent few replays made me realise this: @berserkboi - 9.9 - An absolute vocal tour de force of a song, not quite a 10 due to some aspects of the lyrics I do not endorse but a stunning song! So yes, the reason this fairly fantastic sounding song falters slightly on the full score from me has to do with the lyrical content. I won’t dwell on it too much but we (hopefully) do know a little better as a society in our depiction of women. With that in mind though, I realise those lyrics make perfect sense within the context of the musical, and the "journey" of the characters singing it.

The Musical we speak of is of course Notre-Dame De Paris, debuting in 1998 and based upon the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo. So successful was this one (and Belle as a cut to promote) that the Guiness Book Of Records credits it as having the most successful first year of any musical ever. The play has been performed in more than 20 countries, with the text translated into 8 different languages at last count, and the soundtrack recorded at least 7 different times. FUN FACT: Rate Alumnus Hélène Ségara played Esmeralda in the Original Parisian production! These achievements - whew!! - when the Musical Gays come out to play, they don’t take any prisoners hey? @soratami found quaking!

Furthermore - this little song was absolutely instrumental in launching the careers of the three vocalists involved into the French stratosphere (at least to my awareness of them). Garou especially would go from here and score such longevity at #1 with Belle and other singles that he would end up becoming a record holder for most weeks at #1 in France (overtaking the likes of Sheila and Dalida who had very longer careers by the time they got their records). Patrick Fiori was fairly known for his vocal prowess and accomplished with his Live Shows (as well as a 4th Place finish in 1993 in the Eurovision Song Contest) but looking at the commercial impact of his Sales Records - where he was not charting his albums at all before Belle - every subsequent album since has gone into the French Top 10 (as recently as a #2 this year). Daniel Lavoie had actually been active since 1970, focusing in Quebec for a couple of decades til he was cast in the musical - to what is now one of the commercial peaks of his career. He notably scored a substantial hit in 1984 with Ils S’Aiment, which is certified GOLD in France and reportedly sold 2 million copies in Quebec, as well as winning a Midem D’or at Cannes in 1985. He looks to be more of a behind the scenes operator these days with songwriting credits from Roch Voisine, Lara Fabian, Celine Dion, Florent Pagny among others.

Despite my reservations in regards to the lyrics here, I don’t think there is a better example of a serve in music than when those three voices come together at the end, and the harmonies with those gorgeous timbres from all three hit together - chills!

I know some with be having things to say about Belle’s early exit - but let’s hear from popJustice AT Large!

We’ll start with our perfect scorer @jtm (10) - A candidate for my 11. I‘ve never seen the musical but I love this song, mostly for their voices. Garou has quite a few great solo songs as well including a pretty OK English album. @DominoDancing (6) probably gives this a higher score than he’s given any other Musical song in Song Contests, let’s call that a success! - Not sure this works outside its original context.

@Epic Chocolat (5) very much relates back how big this was in France - Not my fave, it was an overplayed hit. I'm grateful for the success the musical brought to all involved. @Phonetics Girl (5.7) as a potential Garou submitter in Song Contest near you? I did not see that coming! - Garou was absolutely everywhere for a hot minute at the start of the 21st C, wasn't he? Feels like public TV played bits of his vids all the damn time in my pre-schooler days.

@Filippa (7) assures me I’d have gotten points if it had made the PJOPS Round I sent it to - Beautiful melody. @WowWowWowWow (5) will take anything over the top you throw his way, but draws the line at Quasimodo harmonising with priests! - Um. This is a bit much for me, sorry!! Over the top but not in the way I like it. @daninternational (4.5) makes new enemies in JTM quite efficiently I see... - Three singers and yet still so insipid?

@MilesAngel (8) proves the context of the show reflects the lyrical content very well - Notre Dame de Paris is my second favourite book. The lyrics are actually very accurate in describing what each of the characters feel for Esmeralda. The melody is very pretty. @Ezz (6) puts the pressure on me Dddddd - Feels much older than from the 1980s. Will be interested to see the write up for this one

Here's Ils S'Aiment - the tune does sound familiar, and considering it's been translated into multiple languages including English - you might know it too!

Another great song from Garou - this time with Queen Dion

Here's Patrick Fiori's other #1 Single, with more Rate Connections - this time with Jean-Jacques Goldman!
