- As we cut the next 10 and get into the Top 40, a few 11s will fall!
- One of the songs without a highest score of 10 will fall!
- A variety of languages and styles are also bidding us adieu!
- Filippa has lost 8 songs and Berserkboi have lost 7 songs, which is quite even considering where we started with Filippa losing so many until her revenge. How will this change as we reach the Top 40?
- Filippa now has 25 picks left, Berserkboi has 23 and we have 2 wildcards here! The wildcards are tracks we came to the decision to include together. More on those #soon!

Let us know who you are hoping we are losing ASAP!

Zucchero. PLEASE. Senza Una Donna is KLASSIK, but Il Volo is just... nothing-y to me.
Wtf. Are you mad? How dare you! It is among the top 5 songs of the rate.

I only gave three 10s in this rate and you still managed to call for 2 of them...

La Compagnie Créole - Le Bal Masqué

I like the Boney M and Ottawan comparison.

Ma favorite song
La Compagnie Créole - Ma première biguine party

A Christmas jam
Bons baisers de Fort-De-France

The band is also surprisingly very popular in Québec. Local artists did an tribute cover album. But I sense irony in the output like when indie bands cover pop hits.

Les machines à danser revisitent les succès de La Compagnie Créole

Demis Roussos - Quand Je T’aime
Picked By: Berserkboi
Credentials:
#3 France (30 Weeks On The Chart), 500000 copies sold, GOLD Certified by InfoDisc
Average Score: 6.847
Highest Score: 10 @berserkboi @If You Go
Lowest Score: 3 @daninternational

Poor Demis barely sneaks into the Top 50 with the first song to make your host cry! Quand Je T’aime was actually a song I had no idea could feature here, and only by chance found it sold as much as it did with its GOLD Certification. Once that happened, I was so happy I could barely contain tears of joy over it! Very much my back-up 11 here, it warmed my heart tremendously to see Goddess If You Go bestow a perfect score to Demis as well.

To this day, the amount of unrelenting devotion that Demis expresses in these syrupy sweet lyrics - delivering conviction of this magnitude, wow! - I have yet to hear anything else in song with this much intent. I realise as an adult this song is the definition of Pop Kitsch (as per the YouTube upload) but having grown up with Demis dying with the amount of uncompromising love he offers, and the fact he struggles vocally in parts giving even more emotional resonance well and truly keep it an absolute Top Favourite Forever!

Demis Roussos being included at all in a rate that focuses strongly on 80-90s music almost does not feel right as his commercial peak predates these decades. He got his start at 17 in the 60s, coming to widespread interest when he joined Progressive Rock Band Aphrodite's Child. He rotated between being a singer and playing bass guitar for the band, and achieved notoriety due to his “unusual high tenor” style. Funnily enough when looking at his pre-Quand Je T’aime output (whether with Aphrodite’s Child or solo) - none of his hits actually did much on the French Charts til Quand Je T’aime. Demis even has some genuine UK Hits I must post below - chalk him up as another potential act to use in Retro’s current round! And, no - I am not being paid by @Jeffo for all the recent promo!

@berserkboi (10) is here, is queer and is stanning! - The first song to move me to tears! A strong contender for my 11, might snatch it by the time I send my scores! @Filippa (6) hits the nail on the head - It’s kitsch as kitsch can but I like it somehow. @teledex (8.25) seems to be using my scoring scale with this commentary and score, I am all for it regardless! - Bit forgettable for a Nana Mouskaki collaborator. It’s okay, I guess.

@WowWowWowWow (8.5) points out extra interesting facts about Monsieur Roussos, on top of being THE Sex Symbol in a caftan! - Giving me over the top bombastic awesomeness! Not me just learning about him being on a hijacked plane though! @DominoDancing (8) is here for one of my French Male Ballad picks, hooray!! - "Pop Kitsch" indeed. Super catchy though. I like it.

@Epic Chocolat (9) adds more French stanning to the mix - The production feels dated, but the vocals still do it to me. Hotness. Didier Barbelivien lyrics are so-so, a bit cliché. @pop3blow2 (7) almost throws a Pas Pour Moi our way - This is not really for me, at least vocally. I like the track, though. @Ezz (5.5) goes all the way there - Malheureusement c'est pas pour moi

@daninternational (3) is not too impressed by anything here - the hairiest album art ever? the kind of singer/music I hate. @MilesAngel (7) could potentially share a lot of the thoughts @Maki would give (when are you catching up, by the way?) - This has a classic French chanson quality. It has some wonderful key changes. @jtm (4.8) gives me a recommendation to post - I shall! - I find this pretty boring which is a shame because Roussos has a mega bop with On Ecrits Sur Les Murs

Now maybe I have a good reason to finally watch that movie, but I'd have to read the book first.

Vangelis - Blade Runner (Music From The Original Soundtrack) 1982 YouTube playlist

It's funny that the last song is called Tears in Rain because Rain and Tears is one of their hits, a callback maybe.

Tears in Rain

Aphrodite's child - Rain and tears (1968)

On écrit sur les murs is my favorite of his solo career. "Nana Mouskouri collaborator" "hijacked plane", I'll have to look up these other facts.

I don´t think that there is any connection between Tears In Rain and Rain And Tears. The title on the Blade Runner soundtrack refers to the "famous last words" of the replicant character Roy Batty as he is dying ("All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die."). The actor Rutger Hauer ad-libbed his lines on set.
Demis appears on one track on the official Vangelis soundtrack (Tales Of The Future). For legal reasons it was only released 12 years after the movie came out. The official soundtrack is a hot mess though as it omits most of the over 2 hours of music that Vangelis recorded for the film.
There are numerous, very, very good unofficial versions available (Blade Runner - Esper Edition 2011), that feature two more tracks with Demis (Animoid Row & Taffy Lewis`Night Club). Both songs are pretty "out there".

Edit:
If you just want to listen to the "whole thing", check this on soundcloud

Hey I quite liked that one.

I had no idea Demis was a Nana Mouskouri collaborator! A plus point in my book too, though my favourite collaborator is probably Harry Belafonte. Going off on a tangent, my mum is a Nana fan, as in she doesn't keep up with new music at all and the only CDs she bought when we were growing up were a Les Mis soundtrack, one Enya disc, and a lot of Nana. And she had a USB of a ton of the other songs in questionable quality, some live-recording handclap sounds included.
