Today we eliminate another guy.

I've read @soratami that one of Portugal's Prime Ministers used this song at their inauguration.

Vangelis - Conquest of Paradise

Picked By: @Filippa
Credentials 3x Platinum in Germany, Platinum in the Netherlands, Gold in Austria (1.600.000 copies sold). #1 in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland, #2 in Austria
Average Score: 7.9000
Highest Score: 11 @If You Go, 10 @Sprockrooster, @Epic Chocolat, @MilesAngel, @TéléDex
Lowest Score: 2.7 @saviodxl

Vangelis, Greek musician and composer, who is famous for composing soundtracks to the movies Chariots of Fire, Blade Runner and Conquest of Paradise.

In the 60s he founded the psychedelic rock group Aphrodite’s Child with Demis Roussos. Their concept album “666” is a prog rog classic. In the 70s his best-known work is with Jon Anderson, lead singer of Yes. They released four albums together with “I’ll Find My Way Home” as their most successful single.

And he released more than 30 solo albums and soundtracks.

“Conquest of Paradise” is written for the soundtrack of the 1992 movie “1492 - The Conquest of Paradise”. The movie is about the discovery of America 500 years earlier. Vangelis was supposed to deliver the music to the impressive pictures of large sailing ships and knew: the music had to sound correspondingly imposing and majestic. In the back of his mind, he had a melody that Georg Friedrich Händel composed and so Händel’s music was the inspiration to this soundtrack.

However, the movie and soundtrack flopped.

The song only became known two years later through exceptional boxer Henry Maske. He made "Conquest of Paradise" the music he marched into the ring at the world championship fight against Iran Barkley, which was watched by around 15 million television viewers. As a result, "Conquest of Paradise" became Germany’s best-selling single of 1995, was triple platinum and will forever be remembered as the famous boxer's anthem.

Anyone who has wondered what the lyrics mean: nothing. “In noreni per-i-pe, in noremi co-ra, tira mine per-i-to” is not based on any real language.

What did PopJustice think?

@MilesAngel (10) Vangelis is a legend. The combination of madrigal choir singing, classical piano and glorious synths makes for a sublime experience.

@Sprockrooster (10) Sweep me of my feet with that majestic production.

@jtm (4.5) I have nothing against this song but I‘ve heard this too many times

@Filippa (8) Very majestic.

@Epic Chocolat (10) I love the song, the video with Gérard Depardieu in slomo. And Vangelis used to be in a band with Demis Roussos. Great Greek connection.

@DominoDancing (8) Works specifically as a soundtrack adaption of the old Folia theme. Would otherwise be a little too far on the New Age side for me.

@WowWowWowWow (7) Brb running on the beach... wait, wrong movie...

@Phonetics Girl (7) Pretty but a biopic with Columbus as the protagonist feels so... yikes! in AD 2020 ddd

@pop3blow2 (9.2) The first minute serves big Enya energy (nothing wrong with that). Sweeping & always a nice listen.

@daninternational (6.5) It's nice but it's just a soundtrack, not something I would ever actively listen to. People actually bought this in their droves?

@berserkboi (7.1) This was pleasant but a bit on the forgettable side!

Début De Soirée - Nuit De Folie

We break into my Holy Trinity of 80s French Male bops as we pave the way into the Top 20, sadly! (Watch out Images and Partenaire Particulier - nothing is sacred with our voters!) I hadn’t realised my co-host was actually the lowest scorer for Nuit De Folie, I will need an extensive explanation!! Dddd

Nuit De Folie is one of only two songs to have featured in PopJustice Rates before. It ended at #40 in Part 3 of the PWL/SAW Rate and got my 11 at the time. I will consider it a big success that it gained 18 spots here, and almost reached the Top 20 in this Lost Classics Rate. How long will La Neige Au Sahara last now? #soon!

To best illustrate why Nuit De Folie is a song I treasure, and was on the shortlist for my 11 - I will go to my original commentary when I was finalising my scores: “Apparently baby Berserky used to dance to this all the time and rewind his cassette ad nauseum to the horror of his older siblings who’d have to listen on repeat for fear of making him cry and their mother disciplining them! Ddddd” So yes a conversation about the song with my mum reminded me of how I terrorised my family, and being the awful youngest sibling I am - I burst out laughing!

Fun fact: to this day - my sister still cannot stand this song and would have easily given it a zero if she had voted. @Doodvid will be happy to hear that before weaponising 9.8 scores - I was weaponising French Bubblegum Pop Music! Nostalgia aside - I cannot deny the pure joy of Nuit De Folie! As debut singles go - it certainly leaves a very strong and lasting impression (to think Début De Soirée struggled to find a record label to sign them at first is puzzling!). So lasting is the impact of Nuit De Folie in fact, it is one of the most played songs at NYE parties in French speaking parts of the world.

WowWowWowWow thinks of Début De Soirée as French Modern Talkers and I can certainly hear it. The Berserky will make a case for Nuit De Folie being a stronger 80s song than the original You’re My Heart You’re My Soul (since you all know it is the '98 Version my 10 was for ddd). The production courtesy Pete Hammond from PWL is certainly much fuller, the lyrics relating the pure joy of loving music and its physical manifestations, as well as a rap verse definitely showcasing a lot of versatility along with talent!

I have yet to hear a song by these boys I don’t like, and France kinda agrees with me. Despite never sending another of their tracks to the top of the chart or to such massive sales, they had a string of hits til the end of the decade. In Mauritius I remember Belles Belles Belles was massive too! Let me link a few at the end of this post for your bopping pleasure!

@TéléDex (9.25) is here for the music but not the visuals! - Good song, terrible MV, trying my best to ignore it. @Epic Chocolat (8) is giving me a very non-PopJustice perspective but I agree this is a strong decade for Pop Rap! - I have a weakness for rap in 80s French songs. @DominoDancing (7) is ironically stanning the visuals, I think? I see the Modern Talking vibes kept Nuit De Folie getting stronger scores though ddd - The video is pure gold. The song is...catchy, but on the generic side.

@daninternational (8.75) isn’t exactly wrong though if one’s Porn Name is Début De Soirée (Start Of The Night/Early Evening), I am guessing you are the nominated fluffer ddd - the band(?) name sounds like when me and my friends made up French porn star names from our limited knowledge (I was Baguette Magique). There's a good song under the tongue-in-cheekness.

@Ezz (7.5) will have to share some examples of Agadoo as I am unfamiliar, but always happy to learn! - Agadoo like energy. @WowWowWowWow (9), I must ask if this has developed into a full 10 yet! - What the Bavardage Moderne is happening here????? @Phonetics Girl (8) might be endorsing my 80s French Male stanning afterall! - maybe French new wave bands do it better.

@Filippa (5) gives me a score that sadly does not quite match the commentary, I blamed that Bavardage Moderne!! - A fun song. @MilesAngel (7.5) is a fan too according to the commentary - This reminds me a lot of some of Giorgio Moroder's 80's output which is a big compliment. The synths are really great and the melody is good. @jtm (7.9) might want to check out William Picard in later music videos as he isn’t actually that bad ddd - Dddd the total campness of it all. Probably would‘t spend a nuit the folie with either singer though.

La Vie, La Nuit - which actually made it all the way to #19 in the same SAW/PWL Rate (quick Ace - do another Male Vocal Round so it can win PJRetro!)

Here's Belles Belles Belles

The boys are actually pretty impressive live!

I know this cover by Saragossa Band (German band). It's called Agadou like the French version but it's in English:

Edit: I've just spotted the black-faced drummer! It seems that back in the 80s such means were used without thinking. But I'd really had thought that artists would be more sensitive ...

Remember when eliminations started all the way back in November and I shared this with you all?

Under the Spoiler Tag are the songs that have received an 11 and/or a 0!

I am guessing none of you probably thought we still had a zero lurking around, right?

Just to remind yourself of what those songs were - here they are again!

Era - Ameno
Picked By: Berserkboi
Credentials:
#2 Belgium, #5 France, 1000000 Units SOLD, Certified Diamond by SNEP, #5 Sweden, Certified Triple PLATINUM
Average Score: 7.9068
Highest Score: 10 @berserkboi @Sprockrooster @Ezz @If You Go @Ana Raquel
Lowest Score: 0 @saviodxl

Can you believe it, girls? Savio was the true Rate Villain, and silent killer all along! Tanking Era in such a way that we’d probably be looking at a Top 15 finish if his scores weren’t counted!! I think your brother Ezz and sister Ana Raquel will want to have words with you, as they are now left with only one and two 10s respectively!

I suppose the High Scorers here are no surprise since they include the submitter and high point givers to DJ Quicksilver’s Cover/Remix from PJ00s. Ezz really has to be thanked for bringing Ameno back into my life. I had completely forgotten how much I stanned the song back in the day and it was not even on my radar for inclusion here. In fact, even the song title in PJ00s didn’t trigger anything for me - and I was all set to give Viva El Amor my 12 until the first choral notes hit and transported me back to 12 Year Old Berserky listening to the radio in the hope they’d play Ameno so I could record it on cassette!

I then remembered I first heard the song through that German Music Countdown on TV (which makes it surprising there isn’t a German Chart Position to report on here, since it clearly made that chart) and loving the medieval Music Video so much! I was a big fan of a film series called Les Visiteurs at the time, and loved reading Asterix comic books so this was completely up my alley!

Era (project from composer Eric Lévi - who also worked on Les Visiteurs) was an experiment to release New Age Music in an imaginary language, which sounded similar to Latin or Greek but did not actually mean anything. This style allowed for mashing Gregorian Chants with elements/structures of modern music and the result was amazing to my ears! In fact, it was sweet music to a lot of people as the first Era album (self-titled) sold over 6 million copies worldwide, and became the most exported French album of all time.

Despite diminishing returns, and not setting the charts on fire anymore - you’ll be pleased to know that the project is still alive and evolved into Arabic influences by the 4th album released (BRB - tracking for Song Contests!) in 2008.

What did PopJustice have to say about Ameno? You’ll notice this one caused quite a bit of discussion!

@jtm (9.6) brings Enigma into the mix (ah yes, I did enjoy some relaxing yoga with their music in the background) - There‘s also Ameno (Remix) but I’m not sure if that’s just a radio edit or an actual remix as they sound pretty much the same to me. I always felt like this was what the fourth Enigma album should have been to continue their success. I do remember though that Era (the album) was a gigantic hit at the time and my friend from school‘s new age mum played it constantly.

@TéléDex (9) rates any version of Ameno about the same (so do I, actually!) - Confused this with the DJ Quicksilver version, which I was thinking 8.75 or 9, but this is a great choral melody anyway, so no difference for the score on this one. @Epic Chocolat (7) has the same affiliations I do! - Always makes me think of the movie "Les Visiteurs". The medieval vibe. @DominoDancing (7) hears cheese where I hear euphoria (Stream VIDEOCLUB’s New Album, please!) - I still don't know why all this new-age electronica like Enigma, Adiemus or Era managed to chart this high. But sure, it's pleasant, if ultra cheesy.

@saviodxl (0) gives us a Child Destroying Rate Villain turn! (I should try and track whether Dorothee got the same score Ddd) - One thing I dislike as much as kids choir is church choir. I have listened to this song in different contexts and in all of them I disliked it dddd. Sorry. @Phonetics Girl (7) stans Era for different reasons! - when this was in PJ00s, I thought they probably got away with sampling a church song cause most people ain't catholic. the fact that this was actually a new age song, which is like the greatest enemy of catholic values (along with the gay agenda), whew! have a bunch of points!

@WowWowWowWow (8) name checks a favourite! - Enigma found returning to innocence!! @Filippa (8) enjoys too! - I do like these celestial choirs! @daninternational (6) seems undecided with this one - This is such a weird genre. But not a bad example of it, I guess. @pop3blow2 (9.2) is less undecided! - This kinda sucks you in the more it goes along, doesn’t it?

@Ezz (10) takes us back too! - Ah, my 'controversial PJ00 entry's progenitor. I love this ... anything operatic is just so evocative. @berserkboi (10) eventually found the words! - Words fail to express how much I stanned this song back in the day! @MilesAngel (8.5) is happy we represented this genre here - I'm always here for a medieval music inspired track. It's quite stirring whilst being relaxing at the same time. We end with @Sprockrooster (10) who reminds me of more reasons to stan the 90s! - Quintessential 90's. A clash of trance and new-age. It is like Enya snapped.

The version @Ana Raquel and I stanned with a 12!

Some more ERA numbers, ripe for Song Contest use!

ERA - the connection guru! @pop3blow2 will stan that this track of theirs features Andrea Bocelli (Lost Classics Rate Alumnus) AND is called I Believe, the same title as the winner of the round Ameno was on!
