The 80s-90s Lost Classics Rate - Goodbye Wes! :'-(

@pop3blow2 (11) A timeless classic. A melody that gets in your brain & never leaves. I love the tight, staccato, claustrophobic verses mashed up with the airy escape of the chorus. The phased synth that starts 2:40 & ends at 2:50… like a literal audible 10-1 countdown. Genius. The Shiny Toy Guns version is great, too… if not a bit overly glossy compared to the original. Also, imagine the cognitive dissonance I felt listening to the Ava Max album this year & hiring her interpolate this in a song. I almost had to give points for the audacity! Truly a song for the ages.

Wait, what?

Ah, man! Once it cracked the top 20, I really hoped it would keep going to the top 10, maybe? Pretty pleased with how well it did, here, It was really my easy 11. I did listen intently to the other songs to find a challenger, but didn’t.

‘Major Tom’ just checks a lot of boxes for me. I love ‘spacey’ sci-fi feel. I also love that it references/ continues the narrative of another song. I also quite enjoy its cross generational appeal with the Shiny Toy Guns version & even Ava Max now referencing it.

Wait, what?

I of course meant ‘hearing’ not ‘hiring’ in my commentary. But you got it. I certainly perked up on her album when ‘Born To The Night’ came on.

Quoting myself from a 2019 post from the "Forgotten Songs of the 1980´s"-Thread re: Ofra Haza´s Galbi:

"I actually heard this in clubs in Germany when it came out and it would wipe the floor clean at first. People were just confused and alienated. Most would just listen as they wouldn´t know how to dance to this. (White Kids!).
I then heard it (or some later remix) together with Im Nin´Alu (probably the Coldcut/Eric B. version) in 1988 at the Cameo Club in Miami Beach. It was a night hosted by Power 96 radio. And people were LOSING THEIR SHIT to these sounds.
This is a night I never forget, as it was my first evening in Miami Beach and the night ended in a massive gang fight with police storming the club as we escaped through the fire exits with a helicopter hovering over the scene. My friends back home were so jealous when I later told them that story.

You can still hear Ofra´s singles played at Gayhane, a monthly "homo oriental"-club night in Berlin. People are still losing it as soon as Ofra starts to sing...and when that break-down hits (those ancient strings countered by that massive synth-bass) folks are slut-dropping all over the place."

Sorry I was delayed with this one! I went back to the office for the first time in 11 months yesterday - and got distracted!

Sadly the 11s don't stop there - as one is going with this cut too!

And to think I was coming back to eliminate something else entirely.....

Liquido - Narcotic
Picked By: Berserkboi
Credentials:
#1 Austria, #2 Switzerland, #3 Germany, Certified PLATINUM in Germany & Austria, 500000 Units SOLD, (said to have sold 8 million copies worldwide across each version)
Average Score: 8.1386
Highest Score: 11 @Untouchable Ace 10 @berserkboi @Sprockrooster @Phonetics Girl
Lowest Score: 5 @Epic Chocolat @Ezz

Not Berserkboi all set to eliminate something very different and bracing himself for that cut - only to find Liquido was actually who he'd be highlighting! Well - then let me pull an unplanned write-up out of my proverbial very quickly (not that the other cut I had was anymore prepared, mind you!) Fun fact: Narcotic was actually our winner for a good chunk of the voting period with the three 10s from early voters, and a 9 from Soratami ensuring its average score was 9.75 for while!

Narcotic is a bit of an adolescent favourite that I discovered on that German Music Program I've mentioned a few times shortly before leaving Mauritius. Sadly, it was never a song I managed to hear in full at the time on this program since they only ever played a portion of songs that were neither the #1 song, nor a new entry on the weeks I tuned in to the program. It was only through commissioning what I now come to realise was a bootleg mixed CD that I heard the song in full a few months down the track.

I already loved Narcotic for the bizarre and addictive melody that stayed with the listener from the first instant - but once I finally got to hear the full song, that’s when I actually realised how the whole thing is so beautifully built! Narcotic may seem a little old fashioned by late-90s standards and although that was true - there’s no denying the tune was memorable. This was the feedback Liquido got when sending the demo around - although it was positively received, no record label wanted to release it, viewing it as a bit retro til Virgin Records gave Liquido a chance.

It’s fascinating how a lot of these Male Vocal classics I selected had this story behind them (Images and Debut De Soiree also come to mind) - maybe I was a nasty record label owner in a previous life and I am trying to undo those wrongs now! Also worth pointing out that the late-90s were very nostalgic in their appreciation of music for France and Germany considering the likes of Belle and Narcotic were breaking records despite not being overly progressive musically. A good song truly is all you needed to go places! Wikipedia does not tell me much about Liquido outside them being active from 1996-2009. Why has @DominoDancing not sent something of theirs to either PJRetro or PJ00s for easy @Untouchable Ace points yet?

Let's hear from PopJustice on this one!

@jtm (8.3) has a very different experience of DJs compared with your host, I've never heard this played at any party I've been to sadly! - A classic used by many a shitty DJ to get the party started, as they say. Had a remix last year which wasn‘t too great. @TéléDex (7) is not entirely sold - It’s fine, but a bit boring, I guess. Would have fitted in well with the other 90s rock in the UK, but nothing extraordinary. @DominoDancing (9) was someone I thought would have this as a potential 11 - the more you know! - The keyboard riff is one for the ages. Super enjoyable if you're able to ignore the rough vocals and lyrics.

@Filippa (7) uses an adjective I don't associate with a 7 ddd - This riff makes the song outstanding. Here's the @WowWowWowWow (8.5) we know and love! - Sampled by Kate Ryan alert!!!! @saviodxl (9.2) can rest assured this happened considering those sales numbers! - Please tell me this synth-rock banger was sung out loud in arenas at least in the German speaking countries.

@Phonetics Girl (10) is all for us reminding her of a "Lost Classic" - I love that moment of nostalgia when a song you haven't heard in years comes on and you're like "jeez, the title and the artist tell me nothing but I know this melody like the back of my hand". @daninternational (9.5) might be another Kate Ryan stan around these parts! - This sample is so familiar, it must have been in a dance track? Or did I hear this in UK back then? Amazing that Germany produced such a great slice of BritPop

@pop3blow2 (8.3) stans clunky 90s CGI (as did I growing up - Viva La Radio!!) - This could be a grower. (Like the plants featured in the video!) @Ezz (5) gives us a rare low scorer moment! - Just doesn't gel somehow - maybe a bit monotonous. @berserkboi (10) did not listen to the voices this time around! - Almost suffered from not getting a 10 if rating on a scale but far too amazing for that!

@MilesAngel (7) actually thinks this fits perfectly within its era of music! - This has a very catchy synth melody which is echoed by the guitars at the beginning and in the chorus. It reminds me of the music I was listening to in 1998. @Sprockrooster (10) tells me there is nothing lost about this at his house! And you almost had your Winners Rate moment, had we stopped votes coming in at around 6 people! - A lost classic? NOT in my life. A bop for forever and my clear runner-up in this rate for the 11. Please win this rate. I need to stan this in a winners rate.

The only other Liquido song I knew (and I also stan) is:

Is this the same LIQUIDO?

A listen tells me yes!

The rate has lost if she wins. That is an 8 on a good day.
Well, I guess you have to listen again. I'd really thought especially you would love this song. But an 8 is not too shabby. I really love the songs I have given 8 points or more ....

Right, I'm not voting for any Haan-FM songs in the Women of the 90's rate now.
There are too many too good songs in Haan-FM for not voting for them. So, we really have to think of something else to do to @Sprockrooster.

Well, to be honest, I find it a bit annoying, too. I like the rest of the song better, but the rest of the song wouldn't work as well without the riff. So, no it's not my favourite song of the rate, not even my favourite @berserkboi's choice.
