Wes - Alane
Picked By: Berserkboi
Credentials:
#1 Austria, #1 Belgium, #1 France (10 Weeks), Certified DIAMOND in France for 1400000 Units SOLD, 18th Best Selling Single Of All Time in France, 3 rd Best Selling Song of 1997 in France, Belgium and the Netherlands, #1 Netherlands, #2 Germany, #4 Switzerland
Average Score: 8.6090
Highest Score: 11 @soratami @daninternational 10 @berserkboi @Remorque @If You Go @WowWowWowWow @Filippa @Sprockrooster
Lowest Score: 5 @Ana Raquel

Very narrowly qualifying for the Lost Classics Rate - Alane falls just short of the Top 5, despite being the most consistent song at #1 during the voting period before our eventual winner got there! The reason Wes could have missed out on making it here is that his success with Alane almost crossed over into a Top 10 hit in the UK - with a #11 peak, though this gave an opportunity to participate in the Lost Classics Rate - so it all worked out well for him ;)

Alane felt like an undisputable cultural reset in Mauritius. I may have mentioned the many ways in which our society there had racial barrieirs within - but Alane was a song for which we all came together and pulled for all the success that was coming Wes’ way! AFRICA REPRESENT in the best possible way!!! So great seeing him share the stage with so many big stars of the time, and in some cases catching more accolades - a wonderful time to be alive!

Sung in Duala (a dialect cluster in Cameroon) - Alane is surprisingly not the only famous song in that language that has endured in global culture. Another track released in 1972 called “Soul Makossa” may not seem familiar right away to anyone but the chanted vocal refrain "ma-ma-ko, ma-ma-sa, ma-ko ma-ko-sa" being used in a Michael Jackson and a Rihanna song. I love finding things like that out about unexpected lingual success!

Alane was a genuine hit (as the credentials above prove) and probably one of the farthest reaching songs we have on the playlist, and I am glad you all decided to take it this far - though I must say I would have loved this winning but now I must on principle pull for the amazing Ti Sento as the only remaining Foreign Language entry of the rate!

Alane is always going to be Wes’ defining hit, but some may also recognise him for “In Youpendi” from The Lion King II Soundtrack, and maybe some of his work with Deep Forest if you are versed in more obscure factions of Pop a la Wowx4. Alane caused parent album Welenga to chart in the Top 10 in a few European countries, though sadly this was the only era of his career to have done so. His Wikipedia page tells me he has been working with electronic producer Paul Kwitek so hopefully we hear where this goes soon!

@jtm (9.9) has less Retro memories from this one! - I have a new fondness for this after this summer‘s excellent remix. @Ezz (8.5) blows my mind as this comment makes Alane sound like a discovery for them, maybe a UK #11 isn't all that memorable after all... Let me quickly try to get this in RETRO next! Also - hello again to Mia Frye! - Love the dance moves! This could become an earworm. @Epic Chocolat (9.7) is all for leaving perfection in its original form - It didn't need a remix, the original version suffice.

@WowWowWowWow (10) gives us a memory I now treasure! - When I was younger I had a videotape of the 1996 World Music Awards. Unfortunately on US TV they did not give the full performances of all acts, but there was a medley of three artists who won awards that night. Along with Wes we had "Where Is Your Love" by DJ Bobo and "Desátame" by Monica Naranjo. Wes was the one that stuck with me the most. Classic music video too. The whole package just makes me smile. Now this is the part where I admit that I never looked up what "Alane" actually means and if this is a "Papaoutai" situation where the song is actually about something really depressing I'm never going to forgive this rate for it. Oh and in this house we do not acknowledge the Robin Schulz version.

@DominoDancing (8) manages to make a compliment sound shady - a talent!! - Super catchy. Production is a bit generic.
@daninternational (11) makes an excellent Berserky 11 choice! - This is possibly the only song on the list I knew from my childhood in UK. In fact thanks to the recently released remix by Robin Schulz I've been listening to it a lot. It's a super infectious, happy song and well worth an 11 for the expert way it makes African music accessible to Western ears. Love it. @Filippa (10) fully supports the last Berserky song - I simply love it.

@berserkboi (10) is in his own team, obviously! - This song is pure joy, I am so glad it received the deserved success! @MilesAngel (8) is down to a Top 5 they've only given 10s and 11s too so this should make them very happy! - This is so joyous it never fails to put a smile on my face, but also has moments of beauty. @Sprockrooster (10) will continue to be a disappointed Berserky - Part of my holy trinity this rate and deeply saddened this is not my 11. GODDAMN! This will never be in a rate again and I only have to blame myself for not taking the opportunity now. But then again there are so many other worthy 11-contenders too. So much talent. This song is childhood in bopform. How can I possibly not get my life? In fact I am getting loose every damn time.

Team Berserkboi 11s that have fallen - @Maki @Ezz @Penguin @Sprockrooster @dancingwithmyself,@berserkboi, @Untouchable Ace,@soratami, @daninternational
Team Filippa 11s that have fallen - @Ana Raquel @jtm @If You Go, @Phonetics Girl, @WowWowWowWow @TéléDex, @pop3blow2,

- @saviodxl, @Filippa, @DominoDancing, @Epic Chocolat, @MilesAngel, @Remorque have managed to bring their 11s into the top 5! But will our winning song even have got one 11?
- Filippa has lost 29 songs and Berserkboi has lost 30 songs, this race is over - I'm sorry my dear @berserkboi!
- But there's still one of our wildcards here!
- We have 1 Italian, 1 German, and 3 "international" acts left.
- Only our winning song will get an average of above 9.

Here's our top 5 again:

A little spoiler:
The song which leaves next is the last song that got a rating below 10 from me.

he/him
Matia Bazar - Ti Sento
Nick Kamen - I Promised Myself
Frida - I Know There's Something Going On
Jermaine Jackson and Pia Zadora - When The Rain Begins To Fall
Sandra - Maria Magadalena

I'm seeing support for Sandra, but I feel like she's the odd one out. I wouldn't mind Frida winning, in fact she's been given a 10, but I'd love Matia Bazar or Nick to be the winner.

So who's gonna leave next? As I already mentioned it's the last song that didn't receive 10 or more points from me.

@berserkboi remembers that it was outside the top 30 for ages. Only the last voters pushed it into the top five.

@soratami will finally find some peace.

Have you ever asked yourself why this song was so successful in Europe but didn't impress the UK or US market?

The song was written by a short-lived band called BMW. BMW consisted of Peggy March (of I Will Follow Him and Mit 17 hat man noch Träume - fame), Michael Bradley (of Paul Revere & The Raiders and maybe well-known as composer and singer for Robotech), and Steve Wittmack. The band was convinced that this song had potential and planned to release it as their first record. Listen to their demo-version (Peggy and Michael on lead vocals).

Peggy had spent most of her singing career as a schlager-singer in Germany and was produced by Jack White, a German music composer, music producer, and soccer player. After writing for and producing the who's who of Germany's schlager stars in the 70s, Jack White achieved some international acclaim with his work for Laura Branigan. Although he had the chance to work with stars like Tina Turner or Sister Sledge, he declined that, as he still preferred working with either unknown or unsuccessful artists like Pia or Audrey Landers. He eventually became one of the most successful German songwriters/producers of the last 40 years. (As he started as a newspaperboy in his youth, he seemed to have lived the American dream in Germany.)

Pia Zadora heard the song on one occasion while BMW performed in Germany and Japan and wanted to sing it with Michael Bradley. When Michael balked at singing the song with Pia, Jermain Jackson was brought in and the band BMW somehow lost the song to them. But with Peggy co-writing the song and Jack White producing it for Pia and Jermain, the song has to have strong roots in German schlager. Peggy revealed in an interview a few years ago that the song was something like their pension provision. The tabloid estimates that she still earns € 100.000 a year with it.

Pia Zadora's success as actress/singer is said to be owed to Israeli multimillionaire husband Meshulam Riklis. While her acting career never got going, her singing attempts were met with more positive reactions. She even received a Grammy Award nomination for "Rock It Out". "When the Rain Begins to Fall" was part of the soundtrack of a movie "Voyage of the Rock Aliens", in which Pia and Jermaine starred. I really don't believe that we need to watch it …

What did PopJustice think?

@MilesAngel (10) An epic 80's production and one of my big discoveries. The synths are huge and the bass is throbbing. It's very dramatic and Jermaine and Pia's voices work so well together.

@Phonetics Girl (8) Didn't know this was that underrated! Sure enough, one of the catchiest bops out there.

@Epic Chocolat (8,4) It's kitsch, it's catchy, it's good.

@DominoDancing (8) I know this has a bad reputation, but it's a pleasant bop. Sound-wise, like a lot of Jack White productions, just a liiiitle bit cheaper than it should be.

@WowWowWowWow (10) This song is like if you were doing a Mad Libs puzzle for 80s music. "Pick the musician/sibling of an even more famous musician." "Pick a Golden Globe and Razzie Award winning actress." "Pick a songwriter who had hit songs as a 15-year-old in the 1960s." It shouldn't work. And yet in some bizarro turn of events, it turns out being a perfect storm of fabulous.

@pop3blow2 (8.2) A weirdly engaging little song. A video, too. Ha!

@daninternational (9) Oh I know this one! But never knew who it was by. Somehow I liked it more before I knew. But a cheesy classic indeed

@saviodxl (8) Oh well, I guess it's just a stereotype of the "not so famous sibling" that we all know and have many examples of. A shame that the celebrity status (or lack of) sometimes overshadows a good track, which is the case!

@jtm (8.3) Now this is a classic! I can't believe this wasn't a UK / US hit!

@Ezz (9.2) My first Jermaine Jackson song - what a bop!

@berserkboi (8.8) I remember this bop actually! Great chorus!!

@Filippa (9) Somehow this works. Pia is certainly not the best singer in the world, but the song is catchy as hell and together they do sound good.

When the Rain begins to Fall

Pia Zadora - Rock it Out

Pia Zadora - Little Bit of Heaven

Pia Zadora - Let's Dance Tonight

Jermaine Jackson - Let's Get Serious

You forgot to mention the most successful artist Jack White produced: Indie pop sensation David Hasselhoff.
David Hasselhoff who?

And if we are talking about indie pop sensations, you should neither forget our singing ski-hero Hansi Hinterseer, who won a few ski-worldcup races in the 70s and is now a successful schlager singer and actor. Some say without any talent.
