Berserky Host stupidity really! Apologies, and please join us!!Why have I not been tagged in this??
Since we're talking Spotify, I wanted to give y'all a quick heads-up the Hasta Siempre on the playlist is not the same version we were rating in PJRetro. Here's the one:
I'm also afraid the original Nana's Lonely does not correspond to the 2017 remix that can be found on Spotify. When I clicked on the YT link, I knew what song it was in 5 seconds, whereas the re-recording had me questioning whether Robin Schultz already had hits in the 90s ddd.
Sure, I'd have posted what I found but I couldn't check whether the link is correct when I was on my phone. Greyed out for me, but this seems to be the original album version:@Phonetics Boy - sorry to ask but is the original version of Lonely on Spotify at all available for you, and you could send me the link?

She looked like such a huge oversight to me now you've said that but a quick look at her Singles Chart stats show her one song that would come close to qualifying would be La Solitudine, but when I checked the Sales Data for the Certifications - it only came to about 100,000 copies sold, whereas the benchmark we used for most songs included was for at least around 400,000-500,000. Great track though, so let's share it all the same!I started this today! It's been interesting so far, there's some great songs... and some not great ones, but it's quite cool so far, it's definitely a different listening experience compared to your average rate.
I'm surprised Laura Pausini wasn't included by the way, she seems like such an obvious artist for a rate like this.

Thanks for the invite. I guess I don´t have the nerves to vote but I will definitely join in the comments.

Quick Update while I have actually turned on the Computer for the first time this weekend.
- I have added my ballot (preliminary as with multiple listens - I expect a few scores will be slightly modified) in the Spreadsheet and all the formulas are working correctly - woohoo!
- We still do not have any idea if the Spotify Versions of Should I Leave and Yakalelo are correct as the tracks are blocked for both @Filippa and myself. If you have a chance to listen and let us know, that would be great! Alternatively, just use the YouTube links, both provide eye candy! Dddd
- It grates me to no end that there is no Spotify version of Les Demons De Minuit with the mix from the YouTube video, which bops a little harder! Maybe listen to that too!
- The version of Vivo Per Lei with Helene Segara is not on Spotify for me so I have added the version with Georgia, as it seemed the most popular on there. I personally rate them both with the same score!
- Thank you to everyone who has shared interest in the rate/are planning to vote, the reception warms our heart!
- We are planning to do a few more spotlights, one every 2-3 days in fact so stay tuned for the one I am due to organise next since @Filippa fantastically did the last one, I will probably post on Tuesday!
Songs We Could Have Rated!
- The UK/US Hits Edition (Part 1) -
Let’s look at some songs we almost included since there didn’t seem to be any rate that took a chance to feature them, nor did it look like one was on the horizon for them either (please feel free to prove us wrong and run an appropriate rate ddd)
Dario G - Sunchyme
Credentials: #1 Hungary; #2 UK, Denmark, Switzerland, Scotland; #3 Germany, Ireland, Canada
A song/music video I stanned for many year, by the time I realised its exclusion from the Most Appropriate Rate it could have featured on (90s Eurodance) - it was too late for me to plead my case to the dynamic and wonderful duo @DJHazey and @iheartpoptarts (a fabulous rate you must all check out by the way!).
Sunchyme was (and felt) massive to me growing up despite being a relative flop in France (#28 Peak), and looking at the chart data - I realise the breadth of the charts it impacted probably made it a lot more significant than the one chart I was focusing on at the time. This smasher even sold 500,000 copies in Germany and would easily have made the cut - but its undeniable success in the UK (where it sold even more at a reported 600,000 copies) meant it had to go.
Taking a sample from Life In A Northern Town (itself a relative hit) and turning it into a Dance Classic that is probably more easily remembered than the original is no easy feat, and Dario G managed just that! They’d go on to score another hit with Carnaval De Paris, a FIFA World Cup song - hello Ricky Martin and a connection to a song we are rating!! The rest of their output looks pretty Song Contest eligible as after this peak era - not much else made a big impact on the charts so happy hunting!
Robert Miles - Children
Credentials: #1 Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Norway, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, #2 UK, Ireland
Cackle at my thinking this is one of the Most Criminally Forgotten songs of the 90s only to discover how much it actually slayed when it was released! At one point during our selection of the songs to appear here @Filippa and I debated having an exception to songs that made a dent in the UK *if* they hadn’t been in a rate AND were in a Foreign Language or an Instrumental. Children almost made it at that time, but considering just how many songs we were needing to cut - it made no sense keeping something with that exception against more valid criteria.
Children is easily one of my all time favourite compositions and having @livefrommelbs and @Doodvid highlight it in the most recent round of PJSC was amazing! Maybe not as underappreciated as I thought afterall!
Reading up on the inception of Children is a sobering experience. Robert Miles cited two influences, the first - photographs of child Yugoslav war victims; the second - creating a track to end DJ sets at raves with the ability to calm attendants prior to their trip home and reduce car accident deaths.
Although initially well received by authorities and parents of car crash victims - it did not even chart when first released as part of a Soundtrack Compilation. It was only after the track made it to a Miami nightclub and was heard by Simon Berry of Platipus Records - who pushed Robert Miles to re-release it as the lead single from Dreamland that it blew up!
I mean blow up in the most literal sense too. Topping the chart in 12 countries, certified for 500,000 copies in Germany and France, and 1,200,000 in the UK (along with lots of certifications in smaller markets) - Children is credited with being a pioneering track in the Dream House genre, and I truly cannot think of a better song to achieve all this.
Robert Miles would not have a song reach this level of success again sadly, though he did chart in the UK Top 10 again with one of my favourite 90s songs One & One with Goddess Maria Nayler and another cut from Dreamland called Fable. The rest of his output may be Song Contest eligible so look into it!! Robert Miles sadly passed away 3 years ago but the legacy he leaves behind is amazing! Let’s hope someone has a rate concept that includes his hits soon!
Part 2 will feature some 80s cuts!
