The Hunter video and cover art still terrify me to this day...
I totally get this, after I fell in love with Bachelorette I decided to watch all her videos and Hunter was the one that I just couldn't take somehow. Also Pagan Poetry but that's on a different level.

Let's find out who gets the bronze....

Average : 9.43
Highest score : 10 x 9 (@JamesJupiter, @Sprockrooster, @Kuhleezi, @Remorque, @blissteria, @Andy French, @A&E, @constantino, @kumba)
Lowest score : 8 x 3 (@ohnostalgia, @AshleyKerwin, @Petty Mayonnaise)

What a magnificent song! Released as the second single from the album, it peaked at #20 in the UK. Written about psychologist and philosopher Wilhelm Reich, from the perspective of his son Peter. Kate went drag in the music video, portraying the young Peter, while Donald Sutherland played Wilhelm.

@Sprockrooster : The violins lift this song to a performance of pure serene grace and combined with an angelic vocal delivery this is instant discovery for me; but still scored a 9 until the choir comes in. Giving me that little extra, but with great positive consequences for the track.
@Kuhleezi : Kate at her best: a compelling and unique storyline, a larger than life tune, and a universal statement in the chorus that never fails to make my heart melt. Couldn't ask for more.
@Andy French : The melody and vocals are just immaculate.
@constantino : Strings strings STRINGS. Such a majestic track; the elegance and quality this oozes all these years later, she really is one of a kind and this proves it.

It's time!

01. Jóga

Homogenic's lead single, and Björk's ode to Iceland is our winner. It didn't even make the top 100 in the UK- a true state of emergency. A glorious, majestic song and a contender for my 11. I'm so glad this got the crown!

With this song, I really had a sort of National Anthem in mind. Not the National Anthem but certain classic Icelandic songs - very romantic, very proud.

@Sprockrooster : I am reading that this song is one of her signature songs and achieved massive critical acclaim. I am not feeling it all. I would almost say it does not stand out, but that is probably because I am comparing to today's landscape. A truly chaotic landscape of electronic beats. During it's release it is definitely a futuristic song, with several style elements that are now completely normal.
@AshleyKerwin : I like the instrumental part around 2:45.
@constantino : Make me search around on YouTube a bit, queen! It was of course worth it though; the strings really bring this track to life. The instrumentation is so lush and grand; it really feels like a ‘moment’ in her discography.
@One Stop Candy Shop : The glorious strings moment of the album and a genuine Björk classic. Ane Brun should've kept her mitts off of this.
@blissteria : a gorgeous musical tribute to her homeland, one of her best singles.
@NecessaryVoodoo : A contender for my 11. Just gorgeous. The strings are so lovely too in isolation so I had to seek out the strings and vocals mix from one of the Jóga singles.
@Kuhleezi : I think it's stupid to say what is the best song ever, but if I really had to I would definitely say this one. I'm so emotionally attached to this song, and I don't even know exactly why. Homogenic is all about the strings and the beats, and this song is the perfect harmony of both. Joga reminds me of the times when I feel grateful about the things I have and the love of the people around me; it's like crying tears of joy.

so that means our runner-up is....

02. Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)

Average : 9.43
Highest score : 10 x 10 (@Sprockrooster, @Kuhleezi, @Aester, @Remorque, @NecessaryVoodoo, @Andy French, @A&E, @constantino, @Petty Mayonnaise, @kumba)
Lowest score : 6 x 1 (@ohnostalgia)

An absolute classic, and one of Kate's most well known songs. It was released as the lead single from Hounds Of Love, peaking at #3 in the UK and #30 in the US. Even though I didn't give it a perfect score, (I gave it a 9) it still would have been a deserved winner.

I was trying to say that, really, a man and a woman can't understand each other because we are a man and a woman. And if we could actually swap each other's roles, if we could actually be in each other's place for a while, I think we'd both be very surprised! And I think it would lead to a greater understanding. And really the only way I could think it could be done was either... you know, I thought a deal with the devil, you know. And I thought, 'well, no, why not a deal with God!' You know, because in a way it's so much more powerful the whole idea of asking God to make a deal with you.

@One Stop Candy Shop : It's a genuine pop classic in a league of its own. I love it. Not a ten because it loses some of its momentum near the end. If it were up to me, it would've been half a minute shorter.
@Sprockrooster : I do not remember the first time I heard this song. it is one of those songs that have been in your life as long you can remember it. The song slowly builds-up to the climax you know it's coming. Hearing that climax numerous times before, and yet it always blows you away as a fresh breath of air. Your hear something new everytime and a feeling of being mesmerised is all that's left afterwards.
@Kuhleezi : A signature song of the 80's, definitely the best out of her three hit singles. My favourite bridge in the rate, "Come on angel, come on darling, let's exchange the experience" >>>>>>
@NecessaryVoodoo : What can be said about this other than it's just sheer perfection?
@AshleyKerwin : This song feels anthemic. I always feel pumped up after listening to it.
@constantino : E-yeah yeah yoooo! YAS Kate, take me back to the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics a tad. This is an absolute masterclass in pop perfection; all the elements come together seamlessly to create magic.

So there we have it! I want to thank everyone that voted, sent commentary, or participated in any way in the rate. I really appreciate it and had a great time hosting it! Warmth, James.

Ah well, Jóga is still very good despite my reservations if not among my biggest favourites and at least Kate was close behind! Thanks @JamesJupiter for being a great rate host!

It didn't even make the top 100 in the UK- a true state of emergency.
If I recall correctly Jóga was originally only available in the UK as a 3CD+VHS boxset which made it ineligible to chart. It eventually did end up charting in the lower reaches of the top 200 (in February 1998, so after the release of both the album and Bachelorette) but it was either an import version or a re-release of the separate CDs. The Guardian suggests it had been intentionally made chart ineligible as Björk wanted to withdraw from the world of pop at the time.

(I know I didn't vote in this but) yaaaaaaaaas! Now I'm hoping something else wins my Björk rate so she can have two songs in the running whenever the next winner's rate comes around.

I've really enjoyed following along with this in the background, I just didn't feel it would've been appropriate for me to vote - I'd be super biased rating an all-time fave against three artists I know barely anything about. 'twas really well done though @JamesJupiter!
