The Australian Reality TV Girls Rate - #1 & #2 - And the winner IS...

He/Him
Oh and another thing about 16 & Unstoppable. It keeps making me think of this random teen (more like tween ddd) BOP I discovered last year and played the hell out of because of how cheesy in a good way I also think Christina's song is and the two titles. Click play for Hazey provided magic *wink*

That blonde wig?

Trying to upstage someone, Carolina, hun?

Righto goils, she's hungover AF so let's see if I'm capable of a legible post.

We're back to the Idol winner's stable for our next elimination.

71. Kate DeAraugo - Maybe Tonight

Kate_dearaugo_maybe_tonight.jpg

Average Score - 6.12

High Scorers -
@Music Is Life (9.25), @Remorque (9), @pop3blow2 (8.8)

Low Scorers - @Hurricane Drunk & @klow (2), @daninternational (3)

My Score - 7

First of all, props to whoever put together the artwork for this single. Kate looks beautiful and that's a GOIJUS shade of blue. To say nothing of the song, which is a pretty lacklustre shade of beige.

As I touched on in the last elimination (STILL UNIMPRESSED ABOUT IT), 'Maybe Tonight' continues the trend of Idol winners releasing MOR snoozefest ballads for their first release. This time around, however, they went with a love song instead of an inspirational 'look how far I've come!' moment. Which is a nice idea in theory... but certainly lacking in execution. You judges seem to agree, for the most part.

The biggest issue I have with 'Maybe Tonight' is that in absolutely no way heralds the arrival of a pop star (which I guess was... telling?) It looks the oomph of 'Listen With Your Heart', and on the flipside has absolutely zero charisma when stacked up to the iconic 'Faded'. It's a big old MEH - and this seems a decent enough place for it to vacate the rate.

@pop3blow2 (8.8) has crunched the data and likes what they hear- This sounds like like a mash-up of Carrie Underwood & Kelly Clarkson? That cannot be a bad thing, can it? A bit calculated, but I like the math!

@berserkboi (5.7) is pretty ambivalent about the whole affair - Kate gives very good vocals here, and the chorus is very pretty but the whole thing is very forgettable, sorry babe!

@daninternational (3) calls it like he sees 'em - Basic ballad by numbers

And @klow (2) seems to have forgotten that 'Here I Am' exists... and honestly, same - The blandest Idol winner's single yet.

We're sticking with the winners for our next losing song...

But the Idol girls get a break.

#70. Karise Eden - You Won't Let Me

340

Average Score - 6.13

High Scorers -
@berserkboi & @Sprockrooster (10), @Music Is Life and @pop3blow2 (9)

Low Scorers -
@daninternational (0), @Hurricane Drunk (1), @Ana Raquel (3)

My Score -

File this one under 'songs that completely kill any momentum an artist generated on a TV show'. Karise was the inaugural winner of the Australian version of The Voice in 2012 - which the locals will remember was a bonafide phenomenon when it came out. It rated just as high - if not higher - than Idol in its heyday. Higher than X Factor ever managed. Beyond that, the show delivered some truly impressive singers. Many of them could have been bonafide pop acts - and ultimately it was Karise that came out on top. This blind audition proves why.

I'm not a huuuuge fan of Karise's voice, but I can ABSOLUTELY see why she was so popular with the voters. And make no mistake, sis was POPULAR. FOUR of her performances from The Voice reached the ARIA Top 10 - with this rendition of 'Stay With Me Baby' making it all the way to number 1.

ANYWAY. 'You Won't Let Me'. Her winner's single. Many an iTunes-downloading Australian was ready and raring to get beyond Karise. But the song... just isn't that amazing, is it? Like... it's fine. But fine isn't enough to sustain the goodwill generated on a TV show. I think 'You Won't Let Me' does a brilliant job of showcasing the incredible tone Karise possesses, but what it looks is the light and shade to really snatch wigs - or the hook to elevate things beyond it just being 'lady sings the blues & roots'.

As is par for the course with so many winner's singles, it's just very middle-of-the-road. Which is why it's tapping out at #70. Mind you, it did have some fans! (It also had some major detractors, so... law of averages, I guess.)

@berserkboi (10) takes a break from losing his lowest scoring songs - What a stunning voice!! Somewhere between Renee Geyer and Joss Stone! We actually had her win?? TASTE Australia!!!

@klow (7) is getting flashbacks to the German wartime dive bars Liza used to frequent - Serving cabaret realness!

@saviodxl (4.8) thinks the voice is wasted on a sub-par song - It's a waste of a good voice in such a dull song

And @daninternational (0) recognises the voice, but isn't here for it. Oh, at all. - This is why I don't bother with the voice. Like sure it's unique, but it's horrible

So there you have it, judges - we're in the top 70, with 10 songs left to eliminate in the auditions round.

And in the spirit of great reality TV scandals, our next elimination might come as a surprise to some people.

What's on the way out? ALL WILL BE REVEALED... after the break. Aka tomorrow.

One of the beautiful things about hosting or participating in rates like these is seeing how your scores for new and old faves compare with other voters.

Sometimes, things just click - and the songs that you love make it to the top of the leaderboard, widely liked by majority of the voting pool.

Sometimes, songs you rate highly don't quite make it as far as you thought they would...

And sometimes you lose your 11 in 69th place.

69. Casey Donovan - Proud

casey-donovan_show.jpg

Average Score - 6.18

High Scorers - @Eric (11),
@Music Is Life (10), @berserkboi (9.4)

Low Scorers -
@Ana Raquel & @Hurricane Drunk (0), @saviodxl (3)

My Score -
7.5

Spare a thought for poor @Eric, who's losing his 11 only 6 songs into the rate! I actually can't recall the last time I saw an 11 tap out this early - certainly not in the Jess Mauboy rate I hosted. Also, what did I say to y'all about leaving Casey alone? HATERS.

'Proud' was the song Casey entered into Eurovision: Australia Decides - to be in contention to represent us at the doomed Eurovision 2020. It's an uplifting power ballad that - well, in the spirit of previous eliminations, sounds like it could have been an Idol winner's single in 2004.

Ultimately, Casey finished in 2nd behind Montaigne (and ahead of Vanessa Amorosi) - but there was absolutely no denying that her performance was the best vocal of the night. If anything else, 'Proud' very quickly reminded those watching at whom who'd forgotten just how incredible Casey's voice actually is. Much like Dami doing 'Sound of Silence' live, 'Proud' is elevated by the good sis going for broke during the live decider.
While I would have loved to see her win, I'm kinda glad she didn't - 'Proud' isn't a winning song (clearly) and I'm not sure my poor heart could take the thought of millions of people discovering Casey... only for things not to go ahead because of that blasted Miss Rona. Still, there's always 2022.

'Proud' never took off in this rate - probably because it falls squarely into the inspo-balladry that so many of our early eliminations have been akin to. It was second-to-last for most of the rate, until Eric and a few other later ballots gave it a little boost - but only just. Honestly, when 'Sexy' beats you, you know you've just rocked up in your spangly ballgown to the wrong party. This is clearly a place for bops, whether we like it or not.

Let's hand it over to our 11-giver, @Eric - who might warm the cockles of your cold, dead hearts with his reasoning for giving 'Proud' his 11. Goosebumps! Will it be the only song in the rate to make me cry? Probably not. It would be the perfect Eurovision entry.

@Music Is Life (10) likes what they hear - I really love her voice, the production is beautiful and I love the lyrics. The ending goes OFF. Honestly, tea to all of this.

@berserkboi (9.4) raises a valid point - Is this from a musical? The theatrical big notes hint it might be…

@pop3blow2 (8) takes a break from being one of our top scorers (just) - Pretty if not kinda forgettable.

@Untouchable Ace (6.8) shares the same concerns as I had for the song - Not hooky enough for the goal of Eurovision.

@daninternational (6.5) sees the potential in the gal, but not the song - This prompted me to watch her NF performance. With a voice like that, she needs better songwriters Agreed.

@saviodxl (3) is Rupaul and Casey is both Nina West and Silky Nutmeg Ganache - Meh

@Ana Raquel straight up zeroed 'Proud' and still can't get over it's 2nd place finish in Australia Decides - This almost winning Australia's NF I-

Once more, with feeling...

Even Casey doing her very best to sell this live wasn't enough to hide its dullness. I think Australians really like Casey as a person - she won the popular vote (and Idol (and I'm A Celebrity)), so I wish they'd kind of...allowed her to flex her "entertainer" muscles for this contest, instead of serving up this stodgy slop. Give her the DNA banger next time!
