The Australian Reality TV Girls Rate - #1 & #2 - And the winner IS...

Alright, we've reached the final elimination of the Auditions round!

Our judges have had their say on which tracks weren't worth the airtime.

Sometimes we got it right (bye, will.i.am!)

Sometimes we were in disagreement (#JusticeForKarise)

And sometimes we got it straight-out wrong (#JusticeForRateWinnerSexy)

Like I mentioned before - our final elimination means that someone is going to be out of the running for the title of Popjustice's favourite Australian Reality TV superstar.

Is it a one-song wonder?

Has Karise lost all three?

Actually, it's someone in the middle. Naturally.

61. Cosima - Keep It Natural

t202118291-b256129990_s400.jpg

Average Score - 6.70

High Scorers -
@Music Is Life (10), @berserkboi (9.4), @pop3blow2 (8.4)

Low Scorers -
@daninternational and @Pineapple (3), @klow (4)

My Score -
7.5

That's right folks, it's the wonderfully-talented Ms. Cosima DeVito who's leaving the rate entirely before we hit the top 60. Much like in life, in PopJustice was unduly done dirty. Or maybe rightfully so, depending on how you feel about material she gave us to work with.

I really like 'Keep It Natural', much in the way I really like Cosima - and I'm kinda surprised to see it go when some of the more middling contemporary fare is still faffing around in contention. But is a rate democracy and y'all have spoken.

'Keep It Natural' was released as the first single off Cosima's sophomore album This Is Now. While it only reached #112 on the ARIA singles charts, it hit #1 on the independent and the club charts (which is not easy to get not everybody has that). A big part of that was this was because the Taylor Square remix became a mainstay in Australian gay clubs:

*bops in older gay*

I considered us rating this one - and maybe we should have. I mean, we're rating the 7th Heaven remix of Paulini's 'Air It All Out'. But hindsight is 20/20 and I thought the rock-ish influence in the original might have resonated more strongly with the voting pool. WRONG, I WAS.

Anyway, we'll always have Cosima's wonderful run on Idol. Thank goodness for that.

@berserkboi (9.4) will be sad to see the good sis go - Rocking this sound! I won’t be sleeping on Cosima anymore – that’s for sure! Is her whole album like this??

@Untouchable Ace (8.3) clearly wouldn't be here for the Taylor Square remix, then - She shouldn't sing something this upbeat. Cosima needed something with a bit more edge.

@saviodxl (7.2) can hear another Idol - Very Kelly Clarkson-esque!

@daninternational (3) is hearing traces of another song - Word Up with new words? nah

SO THERE WE GO GANG! THE AUDITIONS ARE DONE.

Next up?
BOOT CAMP (eliminations 60-46)

Usually portrayed as the ultimate pressure cooker - a tough couple of days of minimal sleep, group in-fighting, broken dreams and people falling down dramatically in convention centre hallways and sobbing.

Our boot camp looks set to be no different. Over the next 15 eliminations we'll see untouched artists take multiple hits, acts leave the competition entirely, and maybe even lose an 11... or two.

Stay tuned boos!

Cosima’s Idol run was iconic (the nodules-related withdrawal was the talk of the schoolyard at the time) but her post-competition journey - cute girl “When The War Is Over” excepted - was not really it, alas.

I mostly agree with you there, with the exception of One Night Without You (which I couldn’t find a good enough quality version of to even include in the rate).

Paulini's "We Can Try"?

You're both wrong!

Although @berserkboi is probably wishing he was right....

60. Lisa Mitchell - Coin Laundry

Average Score - 6.74

High Scorers - @berserkboi (11),
@Phonetics Boy, @Hurricane Drunk, @pop3blow2 & @Fuchsia (9)

Low Scorers - @Eric (2)

My Score - 5.5

Alas, our second 11 leaves us - and it's poor @berserkboi who has to say goodbye to their top track so soon! Let's hear from our 11-giver himself to see why Lisa's 'Coin Laundry' got top marks:

With all the bop galore selection, I bet you are all wondering why Coin Laundry is getting my 11. Well, this is a song I have adored for yours – the simplicity of it and the yearning in Lisa’s delivery melts my heart completely each time. “Indie” is a genre that had the tendency of verging on overly serious in the Noughties too but here is Lisa giving you Bubblegum Indie and beating a great deal of the tracks in the genre in timelessness! A true talent!

I love hearing why y'all dished out your 11s and this is no exception! So glad to hear your take on it - and I agree with the timelessness of this track. It sounds like it could have been released yesterday.

So why, then, is 'Coin Laundry' the first of Lisa's four tracks to take a tumble? Honestly, you just need to look at the high and low scores. With the exception of berserkboi's 11, 'Coin Laundry' got dished out four 9s (but no 10s), and only one score below 4. Most of the rest of us gave it between 5 and 7. It never tanked, but it never took off. And here we are...

'Coin Laundry' was released in 2009 as the lead single from Lisa's debut album Wonder - and was a huge part of establishing Lisa outside of the Idol machine as a critically-lauded artiste. The song reached #28 on the ARIA Singles Chart, but more impressively reached #7 in 2009's Triple J Hottest 100. A big deal for that street cred!

I stand by my 5.5 for this song. I want to love it - especially when it's so adored by one of my forum faves! But sonically, this has never been the sort of thing that contents with me. It's whimsy verges on monotonous - I want more light and shade, Lisa!

Luckily, there are still three other Lisa tracks in the rate (all of which I scored higher). So it'll be nice to see how the good sis played up and evolved her sound. But for now, the laundry's fresh outta coin.

@pop3blow2 (9) has high praise - The stuff of Quirky Girl Pop dreams. The ‘a-ooh’ at the end of each bar on the chorus. Whew. Gawd, this video. I love it, too. I hadn’t watched it in forever.

@saviodxl (7.6) is having a case of mistaken identity - Sara Bareilles, is that you?

@klow (5) shares this hilarious/slightly worrying fact - I think even she hates this song now because people used to hurl coins at her when she performed it live, which I suppose could cause injury if it came with enough force! It's busking made brutal!

@daninternational (5) mightn't agree with us on the timelessness of it all - Quirky pop often dates very quickly

How can y'all do this to "Coin Laundry"? It's such a cute little bop.

I agree with all of this, tbh.

A funny anecdote I should share with you all! When I first moved to Australia - I had no clue what the concept of a coin laundry was! ‘Coin’ is actually the French word for ‘Corner’ so I always used to wonder why there were so many Corner Laundry places that were not on corners (partially also wondered why they decided to use the French version of the word so commonly ddd)

Also - I re-read the write- mup and you are a big Forum Fave of mine too @livefrommelbs !! After lockdown - let’s go around the Richmond laundromats and find hot guys like Lisa does ;) xxx
