The Australian Reality TV Girls Rate - #1 & #2 - And the winner IS...

Just catching up on these latest eliminations (all of which garnered multiple-sentence commentary from me...not everybody has that!) The Sarah De Bono song is supremely silly but it feels correct that it placed above something as plain as "So Loud". And it's a wonder Katie Underwood didn't cross paths with Ricki hollering about guys with attitude on her walk through the southern part of the CBD!

WHAT HAVE I TOLD YOU GALS.

LEAVE HER ALONE.

47. Casey Donovan - Flow

Flow_by_Casey_Donovan.jpg

Average Score - 7.34

High Scorers -
@Music Is Life (10), @berserkboi (9.8), @pop3blow2 (8.8)

Low Scorers - @daninternational (4), @abael, @Pineapple @Ana Raquel & @klow (6)

My Score - 8

If I'd known Casey would only have two songs left before we'd even reached the halfway point I would have given her 10s, 10s, 10s across the board. The decimation of our vocal queen! Alas, majority of the judging panel simply doesn't stan the good sis the way some of us do.

'Flow' always hits a bit of a nerve for me because it's poor chart performance fuelled the unfairly harsh criticism in the media that Casey was a flop - the same criticism that surely played a hand in her being dropped from Sony shortly after 'Flow's release. The track peaked at #51 on the ARIA Charts, which isn't great in any artist's trajectory - but certainly not for the second Idol winner.

The problem? 'Flow' just isn't really a hit single. It's a beautiful song, don't get me wrong - and Casey's vocal is perdictably perfect - but it lacks the big hooks of 'What's Goin On' and even 'Listen With Your Heart'. They'd have been better off releasing 'How Could I Fall For That' or 'Something Beautiful' as single #3 instead, imo.

In any case, 'Flow' was what we got and 'Flow' is what we rated here and we will give the darlin' the attention it deserves. Like I said, it certainly has one of the more understated, beautiful vocal takes in the entire rate - highlighting Casey's wonderful falsetto and her truly impressive knack to connect emotionally with the lyrics. The production's lush, and the video does a great job of highlighting some of the Northern Territory's beautiful scenery.

But honestly, any more Casey tracks leaving any time soon?

Let's throw it to the judges while I listen to 'What's Goin On' and 'Last Regret' on an infinite loop:

@berserkboi (9.8) knows good sangin' when he hears it - A stunner of a song, and Casey’s voice! WOW!!!

@pop3blow2 (8.8) coins a phrase that fits the flow - Yeah, this kind of sound in my wheelhouse. This is pretty great middle of road, glossy beige™ pop. I don’t know if anyone else has ever used the term ‘glossy beige’ but I’m trademarking that shit on PJ!

@Untouchable Ace (8.3) asks the big (CHEEKY) question - Did she visit yet?

@daninternational (4) references a track I can't recall and hints at further Casey-related rate villainy - I like the Atomic Kitten music, but the song isn't special (again)

We've reached the last elimination of Boot Camp!

And ladies, I am seething.

I go to the trouble of putting on a lovely rate for you. Assembling the gals, bringing them out of cyrogenic freeze, including Tiffani Wood, etc.

And this is how you repay me.

46. Miranda Murphy - That Girl

57299f61b9263b2cf588ac0787cdd65a85e67443

Y'all best believe I had that bonus poster on my wall.

Average Score - 7.4

Tasteful High Scorers -
Me, @berserkboi & @Music Is Life (10), @pop3blow2 & @daninternational (9)

Tricksy Low Scorers - @Eric & @klow (4), @abael (5)

Let the record state, I am fond of all of our current low scorers, their opinions and the tastes. I am more fond, however, of the iconic and under-appreciated joy that is 'That Girl'. So this one UPSETS ME.

Once again, I am triggered by the PTSD of this finishing a lowly 28th in PJ00s. I question my taste profoundly. I ask if there is any sanity prevailing in these strange and floppy times. I wonder who that girl is, if she is not Miranda. Is she me?

Existential crises aside, it is truly a shame to see this one miss out on the top half of the rate. The top 30, even! I thought Miranda might have given you girls a cute new discovery. Instead, a sea of average scores (she got alotta 7s) sent this one from the top 20 after 5 ballots to #46 by the end. A downfall.

Let's talk about the song. 'That Girl' was released in 2004 after Miranda finished runner-up on the cursed 'Popstars Live'. It peaked at #19 with little-to-no promo, and then Miranda never released a solo single (under this name) again. I would imagine most people forget it exists. NOT OLD LIVEFROMMELBS, who continues to force it upon the PJ forum any chance I can get.

The video is a bit fun too, and features Miranda dressed up in popstar baby drag (she does Britney, Kylie, Avril, all the 00s gals!), before realising she's not 'that girl' - she's a girl who prefers writing in a notebook on a sofa wearing jeans and a cammy. So maybe she's In This Skin-era Jessica Simpson?

Look, we've all lost tracks before their time now - and 'That Girl' isn't going to be the last. But this slight won't soon be forgotten!

Let's see what those girls aka our judges have to say.

@berserkboi (10) is that girl who still has taste - A lost classic for sure! Done wrong in PJ00s – a 10 here you get!

@pop3blow2 (9) will need to look up Miranda Carey on Spotify - This is a bop. Is there not much more music by Mirada Murphy. She has no wiki? I like her. The video for this was cute, too.

@daninternational (9) is that girl who stands Britney but won't hold it against Miranda - She's literally dressed as Britney? Is she shading the queen? Good song.

@saviodxl (8.5) is that girl who supports other girls in PJ00s (thank you again for the points) - I gave this song points when it was entered in PJ00s! Amazing video!

@Untouchable Ace (6.2) is that girl who uses Mariah gifs as shade - I don't know her.

@Eric (4) is that girl who doesn't appreciate the video's take on an homage - Parodying bigger stars is probably not the best look

Seeing our hosts reaction to this elimination, has me glad I don't include commentary for most rates these days. I mean.. That Girl as a title is just such an easy setup to go in, but Miranda Murphy - That Girl?

Scream.

My reaction write-up was done with tongue planted firmly in cheek - even I can appreciate the 'umour in that one. Definitely don't be shy about sharing your commentary, I always love to hear a different perspective!

(Even if it means you get taken off my Christmas list).

Memorable for me this song was not, but a top 20 placement on the ARIA chart...that's not something many of the girls in this rate can lay claim to! So props for that.

Also, as much as I feel like the correct songs are vacating, I almost want something I rated highly to be eliminated just so the record shows that I CAN give out a score of more than 4.

he / him
I probably would've given "That Girl" a 10. Not sure if it would've been for the song itself, the nostalgia or its video though.

Also, was the final look Christina Aguilera circa "Dirrty" or Shakira?

I don't think that she was parodying them at all—if anything, she was just paying homage to them via cosplay.

It's definitely meant to be XTina. Just with the jeans still on!
