The Australian Reality TV Girls Rate - #1 & #2 - And the winner IS...

I'm still pretty shaken by your comments though.
Dua shouldn't do that to anyone.
Especially when Brooke did it first, and better.

To me, they are different types of disco... Brooke's feels more like the Kylie, Donna Summer funky kind that's more about the overall mood than the melody. I like the balls out chorus disco more. But let's let both live!

You scored 'Breathe' lower too, but you're forgiven for forgetting about that song!
I still think to myself we are despicable gays for not giving the win to Come And Get In Trouble With Me where Ricki gave us everything, including heart palpitating eye-candy! I need to send that video to @WowWowWowWow !! LOL

So you want a low score in 'Raining Diamonds' to finish second over the 10 you gave to 'Closure'?
I suppose I do as Ricki stanning comes first! As long as those three songs are the Top 3 - I don't mind the order I guess... LOL

Time for part two of our tie!

As I mentioned, Owl Eyes didn't tie with herself.

So are we saying goodbye to Dami or Ricki-Lee?

Or is our rate titan losing one of her four songs?

It's good news for fans of an even playing field...

Low Scorers - @Sprockrooster (6), @Eric & @Ana Raquel (7)

Poor 'Always' was a bit of a victim of its own success here in this rate! It's had quite a few calls for its elimination - but I think that's more of a reflection of Sammi's decimating the competition as opposed to the quality of the song itself. With six 10s under its belt and only one score under 7, the stats don't lie - we liked this song, and it deserved a top 10 finish.

It's also easy to forget 'Always' in amongst some of Sammi's other, more widely-liked hits (3 of which are still in tight contention for the crown), but we gotta pay respects to this track. For starters, it's the last time our girl reached the top 30 of the charts. It hit #1 on iTunes organically (that is, not after a high-profile performance), and was ALL OVER Australian radio too in a way 'Soldier' or 'Up!' never managed. If streaming hadn't started to impact the way songs chart, it would have been a top 10 smash. No ifs or buts about it.

'Always' released as the second single from Sammi's much-anticipated album Nine, after the dire 'Shake That' with Pitbull kinda came and went without much fanfare. The track kicks off the album and plays out like the older sister of the iconic 'Sweet Talk'. It's got bubblegum in its melodies and 80s synthpop in its DNA - the sort of song you wouldn't find out of place on a Carly Rae Jepsen album.

After a wall of euphoric synths to get us going, Sammi comes in and delivers one of my favourite vocals she's put to record. There's jsut something so pretty about how she pronounces lines like 'I like the waaaay you move'. LUSH. The chorus is, as you'd expect, an absolute serve as well, with the good sis going for broke on the belt notes. She even throws in some of those gorgeous falsetto/whistle notes in the middle eight, to make sure us pop goblins stay blessed and highly favoured. A generous kween.

'Always' was released as a single to co-incide with Sammi's acting appearance on Home & Away, so the music video features her delicious in-show boyfriend playing her love interest here too. Are they at Summer Bay? I don't know, I don't watch the show. Say hi to Tammin for me!

Ultimately, equal 7th feels like a high-enough placing for 'Always', but we've also gotta celebrate the track on its own merits. This is a strong pop song, guys. It proved that there was still room for Samantha Jade on commercial radio and in our charts - and further solidified our gal as one of Australian pop's most reliable songstresses.

(Even if the general public continued to lack taste).

For @pop3blow2 (10), a Samantha Jade newcomer, this was the standout track - Oh wow. I had kinda given up on getting much into her based on the first 4 songs, but this is great. Great production & vocal

@Pineapple (10) is getting taken back to warmer weather and being allowed outside - This is a really classy pop song. It just screams summer to me.

@Music Is Life (10) is happy to to join in the applause - Anthemic handclap moment, yesssss.

@daninternational (9.5) can always count on SJ to deliver the goods - Another tune

@berserkboi (8.9) definitely doesn't need 'Always' still in the running alongside Samantha's other songs - Yeah nah! Great bop still but this is not as strong as the three punch combo of the beginning of her section… Also – the kii of the video promoting her upcoming appearance in Home & Away from years ago! Ddddd

@klow (8) makes a VERY GOOD POINT - An easy top 30 in the Ariana Grande rate, had this song somehow fallen into her hands. Bop!

Are they at Summer Bay? I don't know, I don't watch the show.

While they do their best to hide any distinguishing features, I think it could well be Summer Bay (irl called Palm Beach). The only thing that makes me doubt this is what appears to be a long pier in the background, which I don't think is there.

If I'd known I would have bought that black dress and recreated this when I was there in February!

I would love to see you living your Samantha Jade fantasy! To think I lived in Sydney for 24 years and never made it to Palm Beach...

Ngaiire's got a new song out today: a collaboration with electronic producer Alice Ivy, on her new album Don't Sleep.

The album itself is a bit of a who's who of Triple J women royalty - Montaigne, Thelma Plum, Ecca Vandal, Odette and Bertie Blackman (!) also feature, amongst others.

I like! Remind me to throw points in the July Charts!

Our broadcast network is back up and running after some technical difficulties yesterday, so let's get back to it.

Which song has missed the top 5?

Are we losing an artist entirely?

We are. Someone's incredible rate run has come to a close...ure.

6. Owl Eyes - Closure

Ladies and gentleman, our 4th place finalist, Miss Brooke Addamo aka Owl Eyes! And what a song to wrap up an incredibly strong rate run. All three songs in the top 25 and two in the top 10? We stan talent.

And let the records state that the right song placed highest for Owl Eyes here. While 'You & I' is lush disco goodness, 'Closure' is synth-soaked, dark and dreamy electropop that deserved all the good scores it got.

'Closure' released in 2013 as the lead single from Nightswim. The track was absolutely what made me sit up and take notice with Owl Eyes music back then. The moody, atmospheric production at the top of the trick is definitely of the 'sit up and take notice' variety, and Owl Eyes gives us ethereal vocals in the verse that are equally commanding in how gentle they are.

It comes to a head with that undeniable chorus, which ingrains itself in your brain from the first listen and properly stays there. The 'Doooo not fear me, I was just talking, I was just talking to myself' hook has this weird magic about it in that feels hauntingly familiar and fresh all at the same time. Some of the high notes Brooke hits in the second half of the chorus, too? Ugh.

There's something so impressively polished about 'Closure'. It's so confident in its sound, but still feels like it's dripping with creativity as well. The video is a striking visual companion to the song too. Still not 100% what those kids are pulling the funny faces about, but it's all very off-kilter and elegant at once. Which checks out for Owl Eyes.

While I would have liked to have seen all four of our semi-finalists reach the top 5, it's hard to argue with the songs that are left - and seeing 'Closure' make it this high was actually refreshing and a little surprising in and of itself! I guess coming from a place of familiarity with the songs, it felt like some of the other bigger, more bombastic bops and ballads would have pushed this one further down the ladder. I always expected a top 15 finish, but coming in at 6 is worth celebrating.

And we celebrate because it demonstrates the taste of our judging panel. So let's hear from them.

First up, of course, is @Untouchable Ace. Was there any doubt that Owl Eyes was going to get his 11 no ma'am there most certainly was not. So let's see why he chose 'Closure' for the distinction (beside it being her best song):

Epic intro, stunning production, on top of that we have the aural twinkling glitter effects throughout which only strenghten your chances of goosebumps. You can't go wrong with an echoing hallway recording to up the emotion. Especially given the subject matter on coping with the loss of love be that because of relationship breakdown or death. I would watch the video every day if it wasn't so confronting.

@berserkboi (10) was most pleased with what he found here - This is epic yet intimate. What a discovery! I guess Ace will be happy to know this is one of my fave discoveries here!

@Music Is Life (10) makes a comparison I can get behind - Honestly, the second this started I was like “I’m gonna love this.” And I was right. Those dreamy 80s-esque synths – yasssss. Makes me think of Aly & AJ’s newer music – and you know that’s high praise coming from me - but of course they already have a song called Closure.

@pop3blow2 (9.2) does a better job of articulating what I meant about the song being fresh and familiar at the same time - This is nice. I really like the 80’s rock vibe to this song. It pays homage without going overboard & being too corny. This could’ve been a Belinda Carlisle single at her height.

@Pineapple (9) is soaking up the dark energy - I’m here for this moody vibe she’s got going on in this.

@Eric (8) is getting enough old and enough new - Heavy on the synths and the retro - brilliant

@daninternational (8) needs more than closure on this one - Nice vibe, needs more tune

@klow (7) is also getting throwback whiplash (but in a good way, of course) - I'm reminded simultaneously of "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac and "Strange Mercy" (the song) by St. Vincent. Cute!

With 'Closure' out, Team Idol only has one song standing! This is truly Team X Factor's race to lose now... but it's not over yet.

I thought Owl Eyes leaving might have gotten more discussion (@Untouchable Ace where you at?), but alas - crickets.

So let's get into our top 5 eliminations.

It's another 11.

But it's not the end of the road for any of our top 3 artists just yet.

5. Samantha Jade - Sweet Talk

Average Score - 8.93

High Scorers - @Hurricane Drunk (11),

Low Scorers -
@Phonetics Boy, @abael, @Eric & @Ana Raquel (7)

More than any other song in the rate, this is popjustice.

If you've followed Samantha's career closely - or even just hopped on Wikipedia to see how her singles charted - then you'd know that 'Sweet Talk' fits squarely in the category of 'Songs That Deserved So Much Better'. To see it make the top 5? It feels right. Regardless of how stacked the top 10 was in Sammi's favour.

Released at the tail end of 2014, 'Sweet Talk' was Sammi's 5th single - and 5th straight serve as well. Over the course of 2012, 2013 and 2014 she'd brought us bops and bangers. 'Sweet Talk' kinda felt like it was on a whole other level, though. While it's not my absolute favourite Samantha song (hey Firestarter!), there was a real sense when I heard the track that it would be a monster smash, after 'Soldier' and 'Up!' missed the top 10. It seemed... undeniable. Like the lovechild of classic Kylie and Ariana Grande by way of Carly Rae, dropping just in time for summer. Make yourself an Aperol Spritz, put this on and live your fantasy.

I remember there even being articles written about the song by international writers on Buzzfeed and the like. In our little pink bubble, the song had gotten some serious traction. Couple that with the fact that Samantha had, up until that point, had decent success with the general public, and a 'Sweet Talk' seemed like a sure thing.

Alas, it debuted and peaked at #38 here in Australia, and didn't make a ripple anywhere else. SAD. MAD. BAD. I remember at the time being absolutely shooketh that the song didn't take the way I thought it would.

It's not even blind standom talking either. Let's unpack the song itself. Written by Charli Taft (who's penned tracks for Namie Amuro, Girls Generation, Red Velvet and Loona) and Brian Lee (who has so many great credits I can't even list them all but mostly WORK FROM HOME), the composition has a genuinely world-class quality to it. It's bubblegum for the 21st century. FRESH TO DEATH.

Samantha has never sounded better vocally, either. 'Soldier' is probably my personal favourite vocal from Ms. Jade, but this is hands-down the pick of the bunch when it comes to using her voice for radio-ready appeal. Those falsetto notes are just sublime. She showcases her range without ever going overboard. Queen of singing.

There's also the little matter of the song being one gigantic pop hook rolled into a three-and-a-half minute pop song. From the first line there's no escaping the songs sugary-sweet appeal. By the time the chorus kicks in we're done for. Glycemic coma. Couple that with a cute AF video that featured Sammi serving a little choreo while looking ADORABLE against a candy-coloured K-Pop-esque backdrop and you've truly got yourself one of the most premier pop packages Australia has released this side of 2010.

To this day, I will never understand why 'Sweet Talk' didn't take off here or anywhere. Or why it kind of signalled the end for Samantha as a major chart presence. Bad things just happen to good songs I guess - or great songs, as it were. Not to worry! 'Sweet Talk' is a top 5 finisher in our rate, and that's what matters most.

No commentary from our 11-giver, but let's hear from some other sweeties:

@Untouchable Ace (10) sees an alternative timeline where this was a smash (aka the timeline I want to live in) - This would have done so well in all markets. It sounds like the UK the US and Korea all in the best way

@saviodxl (10) is ignoring all health warnings and BOPPING ANYWAY - This is like sugary pop at its finest and I don't mind having diabetes if it comes to it

@Pineapple (10) is right there with him - One of my Samantha Jade faves, Sweet Talk is a real sparkly pop moment. It’s almost sickly sweet, but it’s so right.

@berserkboi (9.5) has a taste for the sweet stuff, but not as much as others - A great song, but by virtue of her previous tracks – this is weaker, only slightly!

@klow (9) is getting traces of a modern pop classic - All of her singles in this rate are at the very least listenable, but it's when in an E·MOT·ION·al mood that Jade shines brightest.

@pop3blow2 (8.8) is more of a sugar-free kinda gal - This is bit lighter and more colorful that some of her other tracks here. Pretty nice. I do think the tome of her voice in places just isn’t for me.

@daninternational (8.5) wasn't part of the original 'Sweet Talk' bandwagon - Apparently I missed this. It's nice enough

With 'Sweet Talk' taking a bow, the top 4 is looking like an increasingly even playing field. Which song will be the last track to miss a spot in our GRAND FINAL?

Stay tuned!
