◢ ◤ The Avicii Discography Rate ◢ ◤ WINNER!

This may be a stupid question, but what should I be taking away from the standard deviation in this rate? I've heard in the rate queue that you can use the standard deviation to note which songs were the most divisive. Is that also the case here?

The standard deviations are included because my background is the hard sciences (I was so tempted to label the horrible graphic I made "figure 1"), and I'm used to calculating the standard deviations or standard errors for everything!

In general, a higher standard deviation signifies a more divisive song, like you pointed out. In more detail, a standard deviation represents the value that, when doubled around the mean, approximately includes 67% of the data set. I can tell you that the average standard deviation value for this rate is 1.862, with the highest standard deviation being 2.868 (for the song leaving us at #39), and the lowest being 1.116 (for the song that finishes in 4th place).

Poor @Remorque not even getting the chance to send one of his iconic last minute/after the deadline PMs to hold on for his scores that he's finishing on the go.

He did send me a PM (not with scores - with an extension request)! Unfortunately it was 45 minutes past the deadline and too late - I had already changed the thread title, put in the final ballots, tallied and ranked the final leaderboard, and PMed the results to @Untouchable Ace and @RainOnFire, and prepared that horrible graphic in PowerPoint. If he had PMed before the deadline (as I had posted in the thread at least three times in the 24 hrs before voting closed), we probably could've worked something out. Oh well.

... that isn’t even in the bottom five Avicii tracks but okay.

You'll like this elimination better, then.

#45
Avicii, Benny, & Björn
& Choir: We Write The Story

CS2212554-02A-BIG.jpg

Average: 5.850
Standard Deviation: 2.805
High Scorers: 10x3 (@WowWowWowWow, @Eric, @Petit nain des Îles)
Low Scorers: 1x1 (@Blond), 1.5 (@phily693), 2x1 (@ohnostalgia)

Next up we eliminate one of the most divisive tracks of the rate, We Write the Story. Being the official anthem of the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest, it garnered a trio of tens from noted PJ Eurovision stans. Unfortunately, it didn’t get much love among the PJ ABBA stans (like myself - I gave this one a middling 6), and it also earned some of the lowest scores handed out in the entire rate from folks who I imagine (hope?) are not part of the PJ Eurovision clique or who were otherwise disillusioned at the use of 2/4 of ABBA trying to fuse their songwriting sensibilities with Avicii’s EDM productions. The lyrics sound like they should be recited at the United Nations and the melody is quite Disney as @Petit nain des Îles pointed out, a far cry from the melancholic lyrics and haunted melodies that the most successful Avicii and ABBA songs evoke. The result is a song that, to me at least, doesn’t sound like it was written by B&B or produced by Avicii.

Y’all had quite the variety of commentary on this one, so let me help categorize it:

“No.”

@Blond (1) - This is fucking trash. This kind of choir should be nowhere near an EDM song or any song of that matter.

@Untouchable Ace (2.4) - This was supposed to be a drawing card, @Mina? Not for me, thank you.

@Empty Shoebox (4) - It was fine as background music during Malmö 2013 (We Are One), but when you listen to it on its own, it's not ideal. At all.

@OspreyQueen (4) - It starts off really well, but then...nah.

@Filippa (4) - A new song of Benny & Björn? I had such high expectations but then I was so disappointed. The melody is something between musical, church music and German schlager. I hated it. The best thing about it is the beat that doesn’t seem to fit to the melody, but I really like it. So, Benny & Björn 0, Avicii 8 points. Hopefully the new ABBA songs are better … (Comment of the rate so far!)

“Filler.”

@Sprockrooster (5) - As an ESC fan I wish I loved this more.

@londonrain (6) - So ridiculously overblown that it’s kind of fun.

@Raichu (7.5) - I can’t decide whether this is good or not. It’s pretty corny but it’s kinda euphoric and uplifting at the same time. Weird.

@berserkboi (8.3) - Interesting but ultimately not a favourite

“Pleasant.”

@Petit nain des Îles (10) - It's straight out of a Disney movie, and I don't know if that's a good thing or not but let me bop to it.

@Eric (10) - Benny and Bjorn and Avicii all on one track – it couldn’t score any less than 10!

@WowWowWowWow (10) - I had the fortune of attending the Eurovision final in 2013 when this song was used, so I'll never be able to be objective about it. As it fits in with the other Avicii songs, it's not really on the level, but if you consider it a Benny Andersson Orkester song remixed by Avicii, it's heaven. And I always figured, if Benny & Björn thought you were worthy enough to work with, you must have the touch.

Next up: we lose another track that didn’t earn a single 10. Guesses?

Just to be clear, I don't dislike German Schlager per se. There are beautiful songs with wonderful melodies and even meaningful lyrics. I dislike those artists who give me the feeling that they trash this genre just because of the money. Which is today's standard.

I do not accuse Benny and Björn of selling out their music (only Björn does this).
Some ABBA songs even sound like Schlager (most prominently I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do) and I still like them. No it was the mixture: a melody sounding like musical / Schlager and this church-choir and then the beat which doesn't fit at all to a church-choir. And that I had such high expectations. So this is why I disliked it so much.

But I then if you listen to some of the Benny Andersson Orchester stuff, you'll know that there is still hope for the two ABBA songs. But don't let your expectations get too high, it could be a "We Write the Story" - thing.
