If you insist....
And I don't even know what's real
And I don't know what to feel
I'm your truth in disguise,
I'm in love with your lies
'Cause I can't breathe, can't settle down
And I don't know what to feel
No, I don't know what to feel
This is the first and only instance in this rate of a song having received an 11 without at least one other 10 - sorry
@OspreyQueen! When I first hinted at this early in the voting period, I was talking about
my 11, though thankfully I was spared this fate during the last few days of the voting period.
City Lights is
Stories’ eighth track, written by Avicii with its vocalists Noonie Bao and Jonas Wallin. Swedish singer/songwriter Noonie Bao is also the vocalist on two other Avicii tracks in this rate - the Nicky Romero collaboration I Could Be the One, and the
True bonus track Always on the Run.
I think
@OspreyQueen describes the magical qualities of City Lights a lot better than I could:
@OspreyQueen (11) - What a beautiful, heartbreaking, and incredible song. It’s like a chasm of slow-burning melancholia in what’s otherwise a fairly straightforward dance-pop album. Noonie’s breathy vocals (and the way they’re manipulated) are a perfect fit for it, and her delivery of “midnight dust on the floor, watch it turn into gold” gives me chills every time.
Despite no one 10ing this track, there were quite a few positive comments:
@Eric (9) - My favourite song from Stories, love the laidback feel of the verses and the build up to the instrumental sections.
@berserkboi (9.3) - Something charming about this I can’t quite explain!
And then the usual complaints about the vocals:
@Filippa (3) - I like the parts of the song with Noonie Bao solo, but those filtered vocals are horrible.
@londonrain (3) - A potentially great song ruined by being some wispy vocals and an interminable instrumental chorus.
And some mixed reviews:
@Blond (5) The drop is suspiciously similar to the one in You Make Me isn’t it?
@WowWowWowWow (6) - Ambivalent
@Raichu (6.5) - (Sunset) Jesus Christ. Why are many of these songs compromised by these goofy ass vocals? With better vocals, this could actually be a very pretty song.
@Sprockrooster (7) - Amazing post-chorus! It seriously pops off!
@Empty Shoebox (7) - Nothing really wrong with this apart from the fact that it goes on too long without adding anything. It's fine to have a record that goes on, as long as it evolves. This one doesn't seem to.
@Untouchable Ace (7.2) - Did Porter Robinson lend a hand on this one?
