◢ ◤ The Avicii Discography Rate ◢ ◤ WINNER!

Of the next 5 eliminations before the top 20, 2 of them received at least one 11!

But this isn't one of them.

You let in the life from the dark
It's like the first time
I realized that all you need is love

At #25, we cast off the final bonus track of the rate, True’s All You Need is Love. This song was released as a Spotify bonus track and was also on the Japanese version of the album. It was written by Avicii, his long-time manager Ash Pournouri, and its uncredited vocalist, Irish singer Ruth-Anne Cunningham (who Wikipedia tells me co-wrote JoJo’s Too Little Too Late).

As opposed to the usual “nice song, horrible vocals” commentary, this song drew the “awesome vocals, just wish there were more of them” from many of y’all (unless you’re @Raichu!).

"A discovery."

@londonrain (10) - Discovery of the rate. Where has this been hiding?!

@OspreyQueen (9) - The fact that this late-night banger isn’t on Apple Music is a hate crime.

@phily693 (9) - A lovely little euphoric number, it sounds a lot more like his stuff pre-True but I still love it.

@Blond (9) - I can imagine this being popular with the PopJustice gays because it sounds like it could have been a big pop gurl smash from earlier this decade.

"Pleasant."

@berserkboi (8.1) - Good but wouldn’t seek it out…

@Untouchable Ace (7.5) - Could do with more vocal sections.

@LiK (7) - I think I rated this too low, because I actually really like it. I just wish we had more singing.

@Sprockrooster (7) - A bit of a generic closer.

@Raichu (7) - I like the song, but I don’t understand why EDM producers get such mediocre vocalists to sing on their tracks.

"Filler."

@Empty Shoebox (6) - Just plods on and on, and is really quite anonymous.

@WowWowWowWow (6) - Very understandable why this one wasn't a single…

Album Version:

A nice, 4-minute acoustic cover version - unsure who the vocalist is:

Next up: True loses another song that's been name-dropped here already. Any guesses as to which one?

I must admit I only discovered the now amazing "All You Need Is Love" because of the Spotify playlist created for this rate. I rated it after just one listen and unfortunately I wasn't using my earphones on my first listen, hence the disconnect between my score and my commentary that came after I submitted my scores.

But it's now a solid 10 in my book and I've played it more than I'm willing to admit within the past week.

Somewhere in Stockholm is easily top 5 for me on Stories.

Next up: True loses another song that's been name-dropped here already. Any guesses as to which one?

Hopefully it's Heart Upon My Sleeve but it will probably be another song deserving of sticking around.

Hopefully it's Heart Upon My Sleeve

Heart Upon My Sleeve

We wrap up the bottom half of this short 46-song rate by bidding farewell to Heart Upon My Sleeve at #24. This 4:40 instrumental track was written and produced by Avicii and Ash Pournouri and served as the final track of the regular edition of True. An alternate edit of the track featuring vocals by Dan Reynolds, the lead vocalist of American rock band Imagine Dragons, was also produced, though not included on the album. I included both options for y’all to rate your favorite, and it seems like the overwhelming majority of you favored the instrumental only track!

@Empty Shoebox ‘s zero for this track sunk it to the bottom half of the rate, but both @Empty Shoebox and @londonrain still have one zero score apiece (on different songs!) left in the rate.

The non-fans:

@Empty Shoebox (0) - The strings in this are okay, but they're repeated far too many times without enough variation. Everything else is just not up to standard.

@LiK (4) - Anyways...

@Raichu (6) - Weirdly enough, the vocals kinda make this worse.

The fans:

@OspreyQueen (7.5) - Much prefer the instrumental version and not just because I hate matey boy’s voice. If you’re listening to the standard edition of the album, it’s like Avicii’s raw talent taking centre stage for the final song

@Filippa (8) - Love the Imagine Dragons’ sound here, didn’t listen to the instrumental version.

@Untouchable Ace (8.7) - Bond?

@Eric (9) - This score is for the instrumental version, which is instantly captivating and haunting.

@WowWowWowWow (9) - never heard the vocal version until this rate, and I like it fine enough, and I like Imagine Dragons enough... but I feel like it's much better without the vocals. I first heard it on Dancing with the Stars of all places.

@berserkboi (9.8) - Gorgeous!

@Blond (10) - This production is gorgeous. I love an instrumental Avicii track so much, so few of them needed vocals on top.

@Sprockrooster (10) - Who needs words to be moved when you have this genius masterpiece. I love how Avicii manages to trump Kleerup in amazing instrumentals and this is basically the proof for it. I feel like a story is told and with the absence of any lyrics that story changes with the mood I am having. Now I cannot help feel but a bit scared for something that isn't there. Truly powerful piece of music. On a side note, let's not talk about what Dan Reynolds did to this track. I adore me some Imagine Dragons, but they completely sucked the life out of it at the few parts (luckily) he is featured.

Next up: We lose another True album track. Guesses?

Both of my favourite rate discoveries out one after the other?

With my zero still here?!

Yeah, I imagine you won't be thrilled with this exit either.

Hope there's someone who'll take care of me
When I die, will I go?
And hope there's someone who'll set my heart free
Rest alone when I'm tired
There's a ghost on the horizon
When I go to bed
How will I fall asleep tonight?
How will I rest my head?

Our second and final cover track of the rate exits! Hope There’s Someone was originally released in 2005 by American band Antony and the Johnsons as the lead single from their second studio album, I Am a Bird Now (a UK #16 album and sure to be mined by @Oleander for PJ00s entries one of these days):

Fast forward to 2010. Swedish Idol contestant Linnea Henriksson performed a cover of the song, ultimately finishing the competition in fourth place.

For 2013’s True, Avicii decided to remix the song - converting it from a piano ballad to an EDM experience - and tapped Linnea to record the vocals, resulting in the version we rated here. Did it ruin the song, or improve upon the original?

"Ruined it."

@Filippa (3) - Now that is ruining a song …

@Raichu (6) - Feels like the melody is going for Bondish vibes and that’s kinda cool, but I really find this to be a chore overall. Doesn’t really go anywhere.

@Empty Shoebox (6) - The intro to this is very promising, but the rest of the song just doesn't live up to it.

"Improved it."

@LiK (7) - Whenever I hear this song now I always think of Sense8 and that can only be a good thing.

@WowWowWowWow (8) - If this song was an acoustic version, or just a Linnea solo, I feel like I'd hate it... but something about combining it with the Aviciiness of it all makes it work for me.

@OspreyQueen (9.5) - I’ve only just noticed how brilliant this is. I love those spooky wailing vocals

@berserkboi (9.7) - Amazingly insightful

@Sprockrooster (10) - It is a track like this that makes me wish Lana Del Rey worked with Avicii. Obviously Anthony is a good pick too, but I am not sure if this sound works with him. It did work on Sufjan Stevens unexpectedly, so who knows? But perhaps we never know now. Awww.

@Blond (10) - I love the original of this song but I think Avicii totally does it justice. It’s actually haunting listening to the lyrics now after what happened.

Album Version:

Next: 11s exit at #22 and #21....(and #20).

I'm pretty sure someone already entered an ANOHNI song before so probably not.

Just imagine if @londonrain ends up being our rate villain.

True is due a bit more of a cull so I’d take some more off that.

The lowest score I've given is a 5.

Our next single to be eliminated is taken from True. @londonrain didn’t zero this, but he did tank my precious 11 with @SuperNerd's, @Raichu's and @Mina's (score of 5 each!) help
So here I am the back-up host, to see this out.

The song was written by Tim Bergling with Vincent Pontare, Ash Pournouri and Salem Al Fakir who is also the guest vocalist.
By the end of 2013 the year of release it had reached top 20 and top 10 in multiple Countries notably finishing at #72 on the Hungarian End of year charts.

The music video is one of Avicii's spectacular viral videos on YouTube and displays an amazing dance battle.

I was the only high top scorer until @phily693 swooped in serving taste.
How could ya'll not realise when listening to this that it is his best song?
Everything that some have pointed out as not enjoyable I love from the quirky indie to falsetto vocals, to the tubular grinding synths.

What did you have to say PJ?

@londonrain (3) - This always makes me want to stop the album here and listen to something else.
I think you said it better earlier in the thread:
I'm stunned by the quality of this

@Empty Shoebox (5) - Piano's about the only thing I like here, and it isn't even that good.

@Raichu (5) - This is just too much of a racket for me to properly enjoy. That horrible falsetto on the pre-chorus vocals is nearly a deal breaker. It’s not a terrible song, but it’s not very pleasant to listen to.

@Filippa (8) “All of my life I’ve been waiting for someone like you” is such a catchy hook that I really have to like this song.

@LiK (8) - It's cute and fun. A total feel good bop.

@OspreyQueen (8) - I remember playing this for the first time after being underwhelmed by Wake Me Up, and breathing a sigh of relief that he still had it.

@Blond (9) - The production is outstanding on this song but the lyrics don’t reach the same heights.

@Sprockrooster (9.0) - Absolutely adoring the piano in this!

@WowWowWowWow (9) - Salem al Fakir on the vocals! Oh yes. Well, this is boptastic, but it would be a 10 without that weird scratchy sound on the instrumental parts. I can't really describe it in proper words, like it's going through a tubular filter or something? If the instrumental part was clearer we would be in business.

@berserkboi (9.3) - Another classic

@phily693 (10) - This is sadly so underrated but such a great song, the chorus and production are some of his best.

Our next eliminations are more 11s but to whom do they belong?

I know you and Rita are on a break right now, but might Lonely Together still be your 11?
