Our next eliminations are more 11s but to whom do they belong?
I'm surprised there's so much love for that Somewhere In Stockholm song. I think it's horrible.
You weren't the only one.
Somewhere in Stockholm is incredibly poignant, especially posthumously.
I think Somewhere in Stockholm was one of the biggest surprise discoveries of this rate for me - so evocative and drew out very specific holiday memories.
Somewhere in Stockholm is easily top 5 for me on Stories.
*cries*
I'm not alone
I am the fire that burns
Not in the city, but out in the 'burbs
A river that's just dying of thirst,
I am a reverend lying in church
A crack in the pattern,
A miracle waiting to happen
A promise that never was kept,
One of those moments you'll never forget
I am the feeling inside,
The one we all know but can't really describe
I am the blood spill, but I'm in love still
I’m not alone
Don’t have to get by on own
I’m finally home

I decided to host this Avicii rate largely because of Somewhere in Stockholm. I hadn’t heard this song before Avicii’s death in April, but once I heard the sad news, I went on Youtube and started shuffling some Avicii songs until this one came on and stopped me in my tracks. Avicii has always struck me as unique among EDM producers in that his songs have a ton of depth and soul behind them, and after hearing this song in particular, I wanted to the chance to explore his discography in greater depth and hopefully share this with others too.
You might have noticed that in every elimination thus far I’ve highlighted - or sometimes lampooned - lyrics, and that my high scores tend to go to songs that are strong not only in technical composition but also have an interesting or insightful message. I thought I was going to give my 11 to Broken Arrows or the obvious choice of Wake Me Up, but after having listened to the entire song list several times, I had to give it Somewhere in Stockholm. To me, its lyrical poignancy, nuance, and thought-provoking qualities are unparalleled among the rest of Avicii’s discography. I’ve never been to Stockholm, but this song somehow encapsulates my own complicated feelings about the place I’m originally from, for reasons I won’t go into here. In any case, I was moved, and I hoped that this would be a moving musical experience for some of you as well.
As I mentioned in my
Stories album spotlight, I interpret Somewhere in Stockholm as a song about simultaneously running away from (“I hear echoes of a thousand screams” and “there’s a black hole deep inside of me”) and feeling magnetically drawn back to (“I lost my backbone”) the place where you’re from. Featuring uncredited vocals from fellow Swede Daniel Adams-Ray and co-written by Avicii, Adams-Ray, and others, it’s perhaps Avicii’s most autobiographical song. Reading through its lyrics after Avicii’s untimely death is a bit chilling, referencing both Avicii’s issues with alcohol abuse that he attributes to his cultural upbringing (“I’m from a place where we never openly show our emotions / We drown our sorrows in bottomless bottles and leave them to float in the ocean”) and his belief that didn’t come to pass that “Right where I was founded / Is right where I’ll be found dead.” It’s a love letter to his hometown of Stockholm with a dark undercurrent, reminiscent to me of ABBA’s classic “Under Attack” in which one’s lover is simultaneously also one’s worst enemy. The production of the song is also very ABBA-like to me.
Somewhere in Stockholm was hanging around the mid-teens for much of the voting period until some last-minute haters emerged and unfortunately sank it. Let’s dispense with the one hater who bothered to leave a comment:
@Raichu (3) - Nah.
Everyone else had generally nice things to say - thank you for that.
@WowWowWowWow (7) - Well, Stockholm is my favorite city on earth, so I'm not here to tank this, but it's not exactly the pinnacle of the experience is it?
@Sprockrooster (7.5) - I love how
@Mina pointed out this pretty contrasting with Sunset Jesus. It gives this album a fresh look on several elements (especially after that semi-tropical bop Can't Catch Me). There is no place like home, despite escaping to everywhere on the world.
@Filippa (8) - This is a strange song, but I like the melody.
@LiK (8) - Love this song. But it sounds like Avicii x FUN. I appreciate this lyrically and its somber vibe.
@Empty Shoebox (8) - Stockholm's a nice place folks. They've got an ABBA museum and everything. To be honest I've not felt feelings towards my origin in the way that he writes in this song, but he seems to know what he's talking about.
@Eric (9) - A really strong, storylike quality to this song, it definitely transported me back to Stockholm.
@berserkboi (9.3) - Builds really well
@Untouchable Ace (9.3) - He sounds hot. Stockholm is somewhere I've always wanted to experience.

Next up: Our 11 cull isn’t over. And I lose another one of my 10s.
