◢ ◤ The Avicii Discography Rate ◢ ◤ WINNER!

He/Him
Yeah, being his début and him finding his feet on Seek Bromance, I felt it would be callous for me to call for it. Poor guy had to start somewhere! Rapture on the other hand - there's a better version already available and he had done better by that stage anyway - I was asking me to call for it!

In terms of scores I want Leona gone, but my storied history with PJ rates says she’ll overstay her welcome by about 15 places.

Yeah I expected the Leona song to be one of the first ones to go.

The Leona song actually bested it, that's a shocker! she needs to go, so I'm typing it into existence.

No way should Fade into Darkness be out before the Leona rip off.

And get that godforsaken Leona Lewis whatever out of this.

Collide is the best one from that list so some of you can stay pressed x

Thank fuck Rapture is out. Now I need Collide to be gone. It's not good.

A 3 was clearly too generous but I didn’t think the Leona effect would be this bad.

The tribe has spoken.

Noticeably absent: comments from three of you who gave Collide 10s.....

....and the two of you who gave Collide your 11 - sorry!

Even without @Empty Shoebox ‘s zero for Fade Into Darkness, it still wouldn’t have bested its alter ego Collide, performed by British singer and X Factor winner Leona Lewis.

As I discussed in Fade Into Darkness’ elimination, both Fade Into Darkness and Collide have basically the same instrumental track - a song called Penguin - as their origin. To quote Wikipedia, an ugly controversy quickly ensued:

the song received comparisons to Leona Lewis' 2011 song "Collide".[3] The song ("Collide") originally credited Lewis as the only artist on the track, which prompted a lawsuit against Lewis, and her record label Syco, as Avicii claimed that they had sampled "Penguin" without his permission.[3] According to Avicii's manager Ash Pournouri, he thought that Lewis was going to only sample the original "Perpetuum Mobile" by Penguin Cafe Orchestra.[3] In a statement, Pournouri said "We were under the impression that they were going to sample the original. They ended up copying our version. We never allowed Syco to replay our version of the track. The original sample rights belong to Simon Jeffes (Penguin Cafe Orchestra) and approval for using that composition is not in our control."[3] As part of the lawsuit for not receiving credit on "Collide", Avicii attempted to have the release of the song suspended until an agreement was reached.[4]

Prior to the case reaching the high court, Lewis tweeted that Avicii was fully aware of his song being sampled on "Collide", "With regards to my song, Avicii was aware & agreeing publishing splits for himself and his manager. When Avicii sent his track out to have a song written over it I totally fell in love with this version and I think he's super talented."[5] Syco also responded to the claim, stating that Avicii was always going to work with Lewis, and that he would be credited on the song.[5] In response, Avicii accused Lewis and her label of lying about working together, and tweeted "Thanks for accusing me of lying and speaking on my behalf. Since we never met or even spoke, please let me and my manager know who told you that and what confirmation they gave you."[6] Hours before both Lewis's and Avicii's record labels were supposed to appear in the high court, Syco released a statement that both record labels had reached an agreement and that Avicii would appear as a featured artist on "Collide", whilst Lewis would appear as the lead artist.[3] Avicii and his record label were pleased with the result, with the former saying "Glad to FINALLY have resolved situation with Leona. Music is the answer ... We've finally come to an agreement with Leona on all the issues ... So happy to move on and focus on hit making ... So happy to move on with Leona and focus on having a hit together."[7] The latter stated "Avicii is an up-and-coming talent; we think he should be given a fair crack at making this record the hit it deserves to be."[6]

Collide was a moderately successful single release for Leona, peaking at #4 on the UK Singles Chart, #3 in Ireland, and #1 on the US Dance Club Songs Billboard. The Afrojack remix of Collide was nominated for a Grammy Award for best remixed recording, but lost to the Skillrex remix of the Benny Benassi and Gary Go track Cinema. Collide was ultimately not included on Leona’s subsequent album, Glassheart, as she appears to have gone back to a more pop/R&B style after this one foray into the world of EDM.

Let’s turn it over to your commentary.

@Eric and @londonrain share the first dual 11 of the rate (of how many?), though in prior eliminations their taste has been quite opposite (case in point: @Eric almost gave his 11 to Hey Brother while @londonrain 0ed it). Their comments were:

@londonrain (11) - Better than the original (don’t @ me). Totally here for Leona as dance diva.

@Eric (11) - I had no idea Avicii was part of this (or the plagiarism that led to his co-credit on the song). It snatched the 11 for me as it's the perfect blend of pop and EDM, with a flawless vocal from Leona Lewis and simple yet powerful underlying beat.

This song also had (or gained) a lot of fans among the voters:

@Sprockrooster (10) - I absolutely love Leona's vocals over one of the best instrumentals from Avicii. Hate the absolute mess from the Avicii-uncredit at first. Not Avicii deserved or Leona deserved this. It literally killed an already almost dead career from Leona. Also, why was this not on Glassheart?! Not even as a Japan bonustrack, which I would have imported. MESS. But this song still POPS off.

@Untouchable Ace (9.9) - I definitely prefer the vocals and lyrics on this production over FID. I can't 10 this though because It's not better than Glass Heart.

@berserkboi (9.6) - Leona’s vocals are undeniable, despite the robotic verses, and add a lot of value to the classic beat

@phily693 (8.5) - I'm surprised this wasn't bigger, it was perfect for Leona and it's very catchy.

Then there were the obligatory comparisons to Fade Into Darkness:

@Blond (8.5) This will always be soured for me by the fact that she tried to release this without crediting Avicii at all even though the Penguin “sample” was clear for everyone to hear. This is good but it’s not Leona at her best and I much prefer Fade Into Darkness.

@WowWowWowWow (7) - Well, good on Leona for trying something different, but no patch on Fade Into Darkness…

@Filippa (6) - I like the “You're the one, You’re all I want” part of the song but rather dislike the rest. Fade Into Darkness is more to my taste.

And some folks who were less enthusiastic:

@Empty Shoebox (7) - It's a bit repetitive, and sounds a bit like 'When Love Takes Over', but only a bit for both, so I'm not marking it too lowly.

@Raichu (5.5) - Big chorus, but the cloying verses kinda ruin this.

@Petit nain des Îles (4) - Here's the evidence that vocals don't necessarily elevate a song at all.

Next up: our only tie at the rate at #10.

Avicii Discography Rate: Top 10

Levels

Wake Me Up
Addicted to You
Lay Me Down

The Nights

Waiting for Love
Sunset Jesus

Lonely Together ft. Rita Ora
Without You ft. Sandro Cavazza

w/ Nicky Romero - I Could Be the One
w/ Madonna - Rebel Heart (demo)

Yes, that's 11 songs - there's a tie at #10.

Predictions for the elimination order going forward?

Hint: one of the songs leaving at #10 will be the second song of the rate to have received two 11s.

Not a prediction, but I'd love Lonely Together, Without You and Lay Me Down to get single digit placings.

I want Once Without You, I Could Be The One, and Waiting For Love to leave. After that, I'm not passionate about the ordering, though I of course will be very upset if my 11 doesn't win.

Is what I am thinking at this point....

Also I know @Mina put Rebel Heart in so people would vote, but if it makes Top 5 was it really worth it? Was it?

I'll just openly admit that I gave it a 3 (my lowest remaining score), and yes, it was worth it!

And re: the Collide and Fade Into Darkness controversy - I think it's a testament to the underlying instrumental track and production being top-notch that both of them received 11s! I don't fault anyone for whatever 11 they picked (or didn't pick).

And just to give some tea as we go into the top 10:

The number to pay attention to is 199.8. That's how many points the winning song received. For each elimination in the top 10, I'll include how many points they received, and how many more points they would have needed to tie for the #1 spot.

14 of you have your 11s left, and 7 out of the 11 remaining songs received 11s.

With the tie at #10, we're over the 8.0 average threshold.

No promises, but I'm going to try to wrap up the rate on Sunday. I'm thinking:

Tonight - #10a and #10b
Thursday - #9, #8, #7
Friday - #6, #5
Saturday - #4, #3
Sunday - #2, #1

I'll try to post album/section recaps as I go, though post-rate statistical recaps may extend into next week.
