Album Spotlights

Throughout the voting period, I'll be highlighting various Avicii releases as a way to help provide context to what we're rating. Here's the first installment.

Avīci (01)

Avicii released a six-track EP in 2017 entitled Avīci (01) that was intended to be the first in a trilogy, culminating in his third full-length album. This eponymous EP - recalling the origin of Avicii’s stage name as the lowest level of Buddhist hell - features, by contrast, energetic beats and catchy hooks. Its highlights include:

Hey
I haven't seen around since high school
How you doing, do you still remember me?
Are you still a friend of mine?

Friend of Mine was written by Avicii along with John and Michelle Phillips, best known as 2/4 of the classic group the Mamas and the Papas. It features vocals by Vargas and Lagola, a Swedish duo comprised of Vincent Pontare and Salem Al Fakir. The latter is also the vocalist on a few other Avicii songs - Silhouettes and You Make Me. The song’s music video depicts a couple’s love story over 50+ years and is a bit of a tearjerker.

I might free myself tomorrow, but I’m on my way tonight
At the bottom of the bottle, you're the poison in the wine
And I know I can’t change you and I, I won’t change
I might hate myself tomorrow, but I’m on my way tonight
Let’s be lonely together

Lonely Together is the EP’s biggest commercial hit to date, peaking at #4 on the UK singles chart and charting across Europe and Oceania. A certified BOP, it features vocals by Rita Ora and a cadre of prominent writers and producers including Benny Blanco and Ali Tamposi.

You
Said you'd follow me anywhere
But your eyes
Tell me you won't be there

Without You was the first single from the EP, and while it charted broadly, it didn’t quite reach the popularity of Lonely Together (probably due to the absence of Queen Rita). Written by Avicii and several Swedish compatriots including Dhani from the A*Teens (!), it features vocals from Swedish singer Sandro Cavazza, who was also featured on Avicii’s earlier song Gonna Love Ya.
