The Celebration Rate: Four Decades Of Music - The Madonna Album Rate

The saxophone bit on Shoo-Bee-Doo blows most of MDNA out of the water, let's be honest.

Anyhoo, I tried to make my - tardy - scores depend on my own personal tastes as well as the cultural impact of the albums, and there really is no way around Like A Virgin in that regard. Do I voluntarily listen to songs like Over and Over or Pretender these days? No. Did Material Girl and Like a Virgin change the course of Madonna's career and both pop music at large? Yes. Therefore the album deserves to rank higher than MDNA, which ... had no discernible impact whatsoever, on any level. Like, in the grand scheme of things, nobody really cares anymore about Masterpiece winning a Golden Globe and very few people will likely remember that she performed a (shitty) new song at the Super Bowl.

He/Him/His
Over and Over, Love Don’t Live Here Anymore, Pretender, and even Stay are all as solid as any of her other 80s album tracks.
Hard disagree. The debut has Physical Attraction and Think of Me; True Blue has White Heat and Where's the Party — not even getting into any of the other tracks, those four are leagues ahead of the Like a Virgin album cuts. Honestly, I could take Dress You Up and Angel and run.

Out of the first three albums, True Blue is my strongest, even though the debut holds up very well. Bulletproof singles, a few extra bops, and ... well, Jimmy Jimmy (which I honestly find cute now so I dunno!)

The Virgin albums tracks sound so watered-down to me. Like, she barely released the debut album and rushed to the studio to work on the follow-up simultaneously promoting the first one because things started to blow up with her career. I try to excuse their lack of M's essence by the fact she was busy, because those tracks clearly never reached their full potential and sound like throwaway 80's deep cuts or b-sides at best. 'Ain't No Big Deal' wouldn't sound too out of place towards the horrid later half of the album.

Listened to Madonna's discography and the entirety of "Tension" by Kylie in the last 48 hours. Feeling titillated, gooped, gagged and a dull pressure between both my eyes. This is why i just listen to shit like Miley

Is everyone ready for tonight?

I thought alot over the last few weeks about how to... find my way into doing the write ups for these eliminations. In terms of lore and mythology there seems to be a ridiculous, insurmountable amount to cover for every album and honestly, y'all aren't coming to me for a dry, informative rundown, so... I'm gonna cover the bits I think are important, and mostly just offer my thoughts on everything else. But the great thing about these rates has always been how the rest of y'all pitch in to fill the blanks (@Pop Life and their obscene breadth of knowledge from the last rate comes to mind, and most likely @mindtrappa too) and how we chat shit about it.

So yeah, I'm just here for my lil essays and a wee giggle. Let's have a good time.

Rebel Heart suffered from leaks, the staggered rush release and the abandonment of the original concept (but not an editing of the number of tracks). Also I preferred the extra EP tracks to half the actual album.

It could have been a classic. Even if sales were never going to recover.
