The Complete Kanye West Discography Rate (#102 - #1!)

24SVCGA.png

Welcome to The Kanye West Discography Rate, where we will be celebrating the complete works of acclaimed rapper, producer and honorary 'Big Pop Girl' Kanye West. Despite being in the game for just over a decade West is one of the most acclaimed rappers ever, known for his constant innovation, impeccable craftsmanship and demanding personality. We aim to celebrate the highs and lows of his sprawling discography - with each album having a uniquely crafted sound that grant us a snapshot into Kanye the musician, Kanye the celebrity and Kanye the human.

So without further ado, let's get started!

All the standard rate business. Please score the songs on a scale from 0 to 10, with half marks allowed. Please send me a PM with your scores in the order the songs are listed below. Also, of course, commentary is encouraged to add some spice to my otherwise dull ramblings.

Because of the breadth of the intros, outros, interludes and skits, you won't be required to rate every track on his albums. Any tracks which will not be included will be marked in italics below and no link will be given.

But if an intro or skit - for example, 'All of the Lights (Interlude)' - would elevate your score, please give the 'highest' mark to put things on an even plane. If you feel 'The New Workout Plan' is nothing without 'Workout Plan', please score as if both were included. The idea here is that the intros and skits aren't essential and obviously can't compete with the full tracks, but if they improve a track for you, it shouldn't be penalised.

(Note that 'Blame Game' is linked with the skit lopped off the end. All other skits and interludes are clearly marked on the track lists)

Similarly, vote for the 'best version' of the tracks. If you prefer 'Diamonds From Sierra Leone' to 'Diamonds From Sierra Leone (Remix)'. submit the higher score when you rate the tracks.

I think that's everything! If you have any further questions please feel free to ask. If you believe any tracks should be added, please feel welcome to bring it up for discussion.

I am planning to give everyone FIVE WEEKS to rate the tracks, so voting will close approximately Tuesday 17th February. This is to give everyone a chance to participate - whether existing fans or those looking to give the albums their first whirl. It will give almost a week per album, which shouldn't be too demanding.

And now for the albums.

Musically, Yeezus is dark and sonically experimental, combining elements of Chicago drill, dancehall, acid house and industrial music and continuing his use of unconventional samples. Re: The Complete Kanye West Discography Rate (Voting closes 12th February)

Oh. Definitely participating in this! Not even one remotely bad album.

If we're doing Watch The Throne, and if you and everyone else is willing, could we do the songs Ye is prominently featured on off of Cruel Summer? Clique, Mercy, Cold, Don't Like, and New God Flow in particular (all great), but it would also include To The World and The One (which are kinda shit).

Re: The Complete Kanye West Discography Rate (Voting closes 12th February)

This is huge undertaking.

'Monster' obviously needs to win.

I'm a sucker for 808s and Heartbreak - maybe I will participate and 10 the whole damn thing.

Re: The Complete Kanye West Discography Rate (Voting closes 12th February)

New Day better make the Top 10, Jay and Kanye really grab at the story-telling heartstrings with that record.

I don't even need to re-listen. Consider this done within the hour.

Oh, and All Falls Down should be #1.

Re: The Complete Kanye West Discography Rate (Voting closes 12th February)

This sounds interesting, I might take part*. And I loved 808s & Heartbreaks too.

* - I don't know how to partake in a rate that well ( and I have read the instructions) so bear with me if I fuck up.

Re: The Complete Kanye West Discography Rate (Voting closes 12th February)

I'M SO EXCITED! Can't wait to listen to these albums again.

By eye, I'm rooting for Can't Tell Me Nothing, Lost In The World, and Touch The Sky.

I'm a sucker for 808s and Heartbreak - maybe I will participate and 10 the whole damn thing.

I was just thinking I might participate to make sure 808s does well. I like all of his albums, but I truly, truly LOVE that one.

Re: The Complete Kanye West Discography Rate (Voting closes 12th February)

Thanks for all the interest!

I agree whole-heartedly.

If there's sufficient interest I'm more than happy to include them. I was acutely aware of making it overwhelming, particularly for those not familiar with his discography, and the Cruel Summer tracks were easiest to cut as they're 'removed' from Kanye. Though I guess I'm asking you to rate 94 tracks anyway - another 7 wouldn't hurt. Any other thoughts?

This is huge undertaking.

I'm a sucker for 808s and Heartbreak - maybe I will participate and 10 the whole damn thing.

I was just thinking I might participate to make sure 808s does well. I like all of his albums, but I truly, truly LOVE that one.

A huge yet hugely rewarding undertaking! You guys definitely need to vote to balance me out - 808s is probably my least favourtite album here.

Paranoid and Runaway need to be top 2 or else.

I think you mean 'Devil In A New Dress' and 'Runaway', but I appreciate your input.

Re: The Complete Kanye West Discography Rate (Voting closes 12th February)

A big fat YES to the Cruel Summer tracks.

You know how there's always one song in a rate that you're stanning for but you can't help but feel it will go unappreciated? That's Robocop for me. Do the right thing people.

Re: The Complete Kanye West Discography Rate (Voting closes 12th February)

So, so here for this, even though Bound 2 will leave way before it should.

Re: The Complete Kanye West Discography Rate (Voting closes 12th February)

He has so many divisive tracks - even within tight clusters of his fanbase - that this should be very very interesting. I have no idea what'll make the top whatever, which is rare. "Runaway" would probably be the choice on most forums but I don't see that winning here.

Are we allowed an eleven?

Re: The Complete Kanye West Discography Rate (Voting closes 12th February)

How come Pinocchio Story and the original (and better) Diamonds from Sierra Leone are excluded? I'd be rooting for both, to be honest.
