The Diplomat

After The Americans, Keri Russell returns with a new political drama that Netflix describes as a mix of The Americans and West Wing, although I would say it also has a tiny bit of Scandal/Shonda Rhimes.

Reviews have been great and as of today, it has been renewed for a second season.

I found the first half of the first episode a little.. lightweight/fluffy? I expected almost a Homeland, The Americans more serious vibe. Does it get better and a little more serious as it goes?

I'm halfway through and enjoying it well enough, but it seems to be going for a West Wing vibe and the dialogue isn't really sharp enough to match up to that show in its heyday.

I would say a bit yes but it's definitely not as serious as those shows. I think episode 3 is when the show finds its voice and the balance it will use moving forward.
