Hiya friends, welcome to the Disney Classics Rate! Really, does it get much more iconic than this? 2017 marks 80 years since Walt Disney Animation Studios changed the game with the first ever feature-length animated film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, and damn what a ride it’s been since. For almost a century now, Disney films have been a constant, immovable presence in households the world over, capturing the hearts and imaginations of children and adults alike with each and every release. Show me someone who says they don’t have any emotional attachment to any of these films and I’ll show you a fuckin’ liar. I mean, Dreamworks hew? Illumination what? Legends only, please. Disney animations have always been a cut above the rest, teebs; sure, they’ve suffered their fair share of Britney Jeans and Bionics over the decades, but on the whole we’re talking about a pretty damn amazing collection of films here – and at its heart, some undeniably incredible music. And that’s where we come in. We’ve rated hundreds of discographies. We've rated X Factor judges. We’ve rated fast food chains. We’ve rated Pokémon. We’ve rated Big Pop Girls. We’ve rated Small Pop Girls. It’s time we rated Disney Pop Girls. And boys, demigods, cats, dogs, lions, satyrs, genies, sea witches, anthropomorphised household objects, etc. etc. you get the idea. The soundtracks accompanying Disney animations are arguably just as iconic as the films themselves, and as mature, intelligent pop culture scholars, it’s our job to decide which single song in this pantheon of classics deserves the highest honour of them all – being crowned Popjustice’s favourite. In the following post, you’ll find a list of the songs competing for that coveted neon pink sash and sceptre combo. Now, I know 95 songs seems like a daunting task at first glance, but I assure you – a lot of these are probably songs you already know by heart, songs you practically grew up with. And besides, by their very nature most of ‘em are relatively short and easy to listen to; you won’t find any Inuit throat singing or gravity-operated pendulums in this Animalia rate, no ma’am. So, let's leave pointless, cyclical arguments about the state of the charts at the door, let's call ceasefire on the endless stan wars, and let's celebrate the glorious, undying legacy of Disney music. I mean, the amount of love and nostalgia associated with so many of these songs surely means we can't have anything but a joyous, peaceful time in here. ... Right? The Rules - Rate each song on the list on a scale from 0 to 10. - Half points are allowed. - You can award one song - your favourite - the treasured 11/10. - Commentary to go with your scores is both welcomed and much appreciated. - Send me all this via PM and voila! Your job is done. The music is only half the story. It’s high time we banded together as one, combining our analytical savagery and overwhelming homosexual energies to finally answer one of life’s biggest questions: What is the best Disney film? So, along with your song scores, I’m also asking you to send me an ordered list of your five favourite Disney Animated Classics*. Your #1 will receive five points, your #2 will receive four, and so on until we’ve built a chart of Popjustice’s Favourite Disney Films to count down after we’ve crowned our winning song! If y’all thought choosing your 11 was gonna be hard enough… well… good luck, y'all. * Meaning the 56 films listed in the next post. If anyone tries to vote for a film not on this list (e.g. Pixar, Anastasia, Mary fucking Poppins, etc.), I will feel no guilt whatsoever in awarding those points to my fave instead teebs. And there we have it, folks. Come on in, stay a spell. There will be laughs! There will be tears (likely my own, once I realise how much work I’m signing myself up for, again)! There will be fancy artwork I’ve spent far too long making when I should have been dealing with a whole host of actual-real-life-problems! There will be ruthless dragging of hideous, unapologetic racism! Fun for all the family.
