Þórunn Antonía - Ég mun skína / Shine

Live performance:

What the fuck was this

Studio version:

What happened IRL?
TBH I didn't even bother with Söngvakeppnin this year, so disappointing were all of the entries. Þórunn Antonía finished fifth in the first semi-final so didn't qualify for the final so never got to perform the English-language version of her song.

Our jury votes were mostly split between this, Kúst og fæjó, and Battleline. One more vote for Battleline would've meant it was chosen in place of Shine (@Rhombus).

At least queen looked snatched at the final:

Oh also Thorunn's song is nice and was one of the very few decent ones in Iceland this year, but... she can do so much better as she demonstrated on her 2012 magnum bopus Star Crossed (produced by synth wiz Berndsen).

(I'm screaming @ that live performance though! What even.)

Anna Timofei - Endlessly

Live performance:

What happened IRL?
Moldova's O melodie pentru Europa is seriously like going back in a Eurovizh timewarp (as this year's winning song My Lucky Day also proves dddd) Anna Timofei's Endlessly finished 11th out of the 16 songs in the competition.

Our jury votes were split between several different acts with Anna only needing one extra vote to secure victory against the two other frontrunners Doinita Gherman and Nicoleta Sava.

Nina Petković - Dišem

Montenegro's Montevizija 2018 had 5 finalists who competed for the chance to represent their country and... it's not a song selection I bothered to watch. Turns out Nina's atmospheric ethno-bop finished in last place and we got the dull Inje in its place. Oh well. Here it's Nina's toime to shoine.

All but one of the eight jury members who voted in Montenegro's selection chose Nina Petković, with a single vote going towards irl 2nd place act Katarina Bogićević.

Stella & Alexandra - You Got Me

Norway's MGP was honestly shit this year and as we all know evil won when A******** R**** got the chance to represent the country once again hopefully flop at Eurovision with his rejected JESC entry That's How You Write A Song. Stella & Alexandra's You Got Me is a perky, if generic bop that still did well at a lacklustre MGP, qualifying to the silver final and finishing in third place overall.

It was a two horse race for our jury with Rebecca's Who We Are losing out to You Got Me by a single vote.
Also one person voted for Ida Maria's Scandilove.

Ifi Ude - Love Is Stronger

Live performance:
N/A :(

Studio version:

What happened IRL?
Poland's song selection this year was a mixed bag with several really great choices and several... not so great ones. Ifi Ude and Saszan came to COMPETE and Kasia Mos showed the other girls how it was done. In the end though, Poland's oldest working DJ, the 80 year old Gromee won with a generic EDM number of the sort I didn't realise people were still making. Ifi's Polly Scattergood co-write Love Is Stronger ended up in fourth place.

Luckily our jurors showed taste with Ifi and Saszan attracting the most votes, Isabell Otrebus also managed to snatch a couple, exactly mirroring the number of notes she managed to hit in her live performance.

Serena - Safari

Live performance:

Girl... find the note

Studio version:

What happened IRL?
Romania's Selecția Națională is another slog of a song selection with five heats before the final. Serena's Safari never made it out of its heat, finishing 9th out of 12 songs in the second semi-final. Probably had something to do with that live performance. Sis where you going on safari dressed like that. What if the real Safari was the notes we tried to hit along the way?

Out of the almost 60 songs for our jury choose from, only Serena's Safari and Feli's Bună de iubit (Royalty) received more than 1 vote each dddd.

Emma Sandstrom - Diamonds

So we all know Scam Marino's decision to revamp their song selection was an enjoyable mess from start to finish. From fake auditions being uploaded to the open audition stage of the 1in360 process, to Zoe Straub essentially being overlord to every single facet of the competition, to the weird way voters bought shares in the finalists songs it was just a big old kii (and I sincerely hope it returns again next year). Even without malfunctioning props, Emma from last year's UMK didn't stand a chance in the competition singing one of the only songs Zoe hadn't been a part of and she finished in 7th place.

Jury votes were quite evenly split with 5/10 of the entries receiving a vote. Emma's Diamonds managed one more vote than Sara de Blue's Out of the Twilight, @constantino sis you should've campaigned harder~

Maja Nikolić - Zemlja čuda

Live performance:

Studio version:

What happened IRL?
Serbia decided to resurrect Beovizija for 2018 for some reason. Maja Nikolić finished in 10th place.

Our jury votes were split between four of the sixteen available acts. I had to break a tie between Maja and Biber & DJ Niko Bravo but in the end I had to go with Maja due to the endearing car crash of a live performance.

Nika Zorjan - Uspavanka

Live performance:

Studio version:

What happened IRL?
Slovenia's EMA featured sixteen acts this year and in the end they chose another pink haired lady in Lea Sirk's Hvala, ne! Nika Zorjan and her bedography landed outside the top 7 so didn't qualify for the EMA grand final.

Jury votes were evenly split between Nika, Lara Kadis and BQL until an extra vote for Nika's Uspavanka sealed her the win.

Aitana & Ana Guerra - Lo Malo

Live performance:

Studio version:

What happened IRL?
The true queens of Operación Triunfo finished in third place with Aitana also snatching 2nd place solo with Arde. Still... cheese ruled the day and Tu canción somehow triumphed over both of those superior entries. But what will Spanish gays still be chanting come Summer? EN UN CHICO MALO, NO, NO, NO

All but one of the jury voted for Lo Malo, with that single other vote going to Miriam's Lejos de tu piel.

Polish Margaret - In My Cabana

Live performance:

What happened IRL?

I'm pretty sure we all watched Melodifestivalen so do I really need to type what happened? Dovvid Lindgren, glitter vag, hairy arms, putting all our hopes and dreams in a white woman with dreads wearing a yoga outfit, CUHRYYYYyyyyYYYY, being betrayed by said white woman with dreads. Polish Margaret was in the second semi-final and managed to qualify for andra chansen. There she triumphed over Sean Paul's toenail Moncho, and reached the final.

It was a two horse race with the jury between Jessica Andersson and Polish Margaret fighting it out with Renaida in third.
