The Idol (HBO)

I feel like a lot of people are gonna end up hate watching and it's gonna end up successful regardless of the reviews. Not too dissimilar to Euphoria, really. Also Sam already trying to tie it in with that show... he really is the straight Ryan Murphy

Euphoria's two seasons scored 68 and 74 on Metacritic. Not up there with the cream of HBO, but certainly not indicative of a show that's likely to do most of its business from hate-watching. Plus Zendaya has two Emmys to show for it, and as we've already covered, I can't see that happening here.

Yeah, overall, but Euphoria had a lot of similar sensationalism surrounding its first season. Sam Levinson has a poor reputation with viewers because of his poor handling of that show; I would say a lot of the audience is probably hate watching and just running on its vibes at this point. Doubtful this will be as big, but I don’t see it being a total dud either.

Well, I'm definitely watching. It's not that reviewers are calling it boring or mediocre. They actively despise it. I can't even remember another high profile show that got a 10% on Rotten Tomatoes. I have to see what all the fuss is about.
I don't think any show in HBO's history - certainly not since The Sopranos and Sex And The City ushered in the Peak TV era - has had such a hostile critical reception. As for the bad PR, the only comparable show I can think of is the Dustin Hoffman horse racing drama Luck, which was cancelled in the middle of shooting the second season due to a huge backlash from animal welfare groups over the deaths of several horses on set.

This is a little interesting in showing how aggregate review sites can create a narrative around a show or film, without any of the nuance a good critic will put into their work. Some of the pieces here have said there’s good material here, and that specifically Lily Rose’s performance and her character’s story as it revolves around the industry is a lot meatier than her relationship with Abel’s character.

The problem people are having, one similar to say Cassie or Maddie on Euphoria, is the inherent sexism in having a female character explore their sexuality only through a toxic relationship with a domineering man.

Also, Euphoria is very much a week by week show, sometimes the material lands, sometimes it’s purely a vibe, sometimes it’s bad. I don’t think that audience hate watches the show, they (we) watch out of curiosity. Sam has become an avatar for everything right and wrong with it much like Shonda Rhimes or Ryan Murphy before him, by virtue of selling himself with the show.

The aggregator numbers definitely will be 40-50ish once the show will be available on Max, also judging from the reviews so far, it doesn’t even sound like something fun to hate-watch
