The Idol (HBO)

New trailer (I think). I’m in Beirut right, and the promo for this is insane here with ads everywhere and it’s the same in Dubai. Even Game of Thrones never had that much marketing.

Is the song playing in the trailer one of Jocelyn's? That's what I imagine Lily-Rose Depp sounds like singing and if it is, I kind of wish that they'd gotten a ghost vocalist to be the voice of Jocelyn.

Ff I think it sounds good! I can’t really tell if that’s her or another singer that’s featured in the show, though. The Jocelyn ballad I heard was vocally very different/more delicate. She sounds pretty much like her speaking voice on it.

Maybe the snippet will sound better in context of the full song. The little looped vocal snippet isn't giving much away.

After listening to it again, it's giving JENNIE.

Yeah ok this is better than I expected. Can call it camp and not in a way that something is really bad, but real camp.

Some spoilers ahead

Worst offender is Abel because he’s not selling it. Quite a literal scream that he’s doing all the “you have to believe in yourself/sell what you’re singing” and yet you can’t find what his character is trying to do. He doesn’t look Bad enough.

Everyone else looks like they hit the spot. Lily looks like a bad popstar with no charisma but with the whole Machine behind her trying to shove it down people’s throats. Said “Machine” looks like people with no clue of how to deal with things in real time but trying hard, which is how I picture most of these old straight white males trying to make album campaigns these days.

Idk I think things will take a turn into more ~serious artful provoke society Illuminati~ turn but… yeah.

Oh and of course yeah there’s a lot of hyperoversexualization that is just uncomfortable. Like, totally out of nowhere.

If you take Abel out of it and tone down the unnecessary sexualization, it's perfectly fine for a first episode. Not incredible, just fine, really.

I grew up watching a lot of erotic thrillers from the 80s and 90s and this was hitting some of those same beats, but I don’t think this is supposed to turn into a thriller? Basic Instinct was playing in the background at one point, so it’s definitely intentionally playing with those motifs. I'm just not sure why or what they’re going for tonally yet. Outside of that, the first episode was pretty good? Not nearly as scandalous as people were making it out to be (re: the studio scene at the end). Obviously I think things will get more intense, but a lot was being done specifically about the first two episodes.

Ironically, I think Abel might be too “nice” for a role like this dd. If it weren’t for the score creating this sort of unsettling tension when he was around, I don’t know if I’d believe he was meant to be a shady figure. I’ve seen him act in his own music videos and be convincing, but those are all non-speaking, so we’ll see how he fares in later episodes.

I’ll also add that I’m not sure how this gets a season two just because the basis of the story doesn’t seem sustainable to me. Unless each season is six episodes like this one, but even then it would become a bit redundant pretty quick.

I actually really enjoyed the first episode. Lily-Rose Depp had me captivated from the scene during the photoshoot where the photographer is asking her to give them sad and a single tear rolls down her cheek.

I do think that the reviewers were doing too much, especially with their description of the photoshoot and what went down with the intimacy coordinator. They made it sound like Jocelyn's manager was taking advantage of her and making her do things that she didn't want to do when it is shown that it was her own idea.

There were several lines of dialogue that were unintentionally funny. Rachel Sennott's awkward energy for Leia was a constant source of comedy.

Unsurprisingly, I stan "World Class Sinner." It slaps. It did amuse me that it was giving the same energy as Addison Rae's "Obsessed" where the intensity of the choreography doesn't really fit the mid-tempo energy of the song that it's being performed to. Put the track on streaming ASAP, HBO.

I feel like this is going to end up coming back somehow. Like, between this and the Basic Instinct scene… my senses are tingling, or I’m just thinking too much and creating a storyline where she ends up getting one over and manipulating him in the end. But yeah, she’s definitely in control from what we’ve seen (the photoshoot in particular was very reminiscent of the story surrounding Britney’s first Rolling Stone shoot) and obviously has a bit of an S&M side that likes to dabble in breath play.

The show is funnier than I’ve seen mentioned, too. The scene where Abel shows up to her house at the gate made me cackle.

I just watched this newly released trailer and I think that you might be right. For some reason, I'm getting the feeling that Jocelyn is going to kill Tedros before the end of the series.

Well … I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. Lily Depp is doing an amazing job and is truly captivating. The whole pop star plot with the associated cast is great. It’s too soon to say but sadly Abel is the weakest link so far but let’s see how that arc will develop.

Also concerning the revenge porn that all reviewers were so shocked about … I thought it was pretty tame considering the same exact thing happened with Kesha when Perez leaked the same pictures. I don’t get why critics were so shocked especially that it has happened before.
