Re: The Incredible Amy Winehouse Rate (#6, Top 5 Unveiled)

Shall we have another result?

5. You Know I'm No Good - 9.50

artworks-000039389433-rlckhe-t500x500.jpg

Highest score - 10 (runrocketboy, Aester, Michael17)
Lowest score - 9 (2014, Jwentz, lemonsqueezyy)

Deliciously dark while keeping the brassy sounds of Rehab, this was when everyone knew just how brooding Back To Black would really be. A personal highlight is the instrumental middle eight followed by the real one and having them compliment each other and elevate the song fantastically, but it's hard to find fault with any of it at all. Michael17 said it was "stunning".

Re: The Incredible Amy Winehouse Rate (#5)

I'm shocked Take The Box left so early, I really thought it'd nab a bunch of 11s. I'm rooting for Tears Dry at this point.

Re: The Incredible Amy Winehouse Rate (#5)

Well, fuck. There goes two of my top three faves in a row.

Pumps can disappear next. Then Tears Dry. Then Valerie. And then the true winner will be crowned.

Well well well

4. Fuck Me Pumps - 9.56

Highest score - 10 (2014, P'NutButter, Remyky22, runrocketboy, Michael17, lemonsqueezyy)
Lowest score - 8 (Aester)

Slightly surprised at how divisive this proved to be as we got closer to the end. It's been my standout song of Frank since I first heard it, possibly due to how "pop" it is in the context of her discography. She also manages to keep the context cheeky instead of vicious and bitter like other artists end up doing with this theme, which is quite an achievement. Jwentz said it's "biting and witty" and "could see this song being somewhat a catalyst for Lily Allen's career", and Michael17 praised its "great lyrics".

So farewell to Frank.

(There really weren't that many photoshoots from that era to choose from)

Re: The Incredible Amy Winehouse Rate (#4)

Um, not 2014 having the most flawless taste here and giving his 11 to the best track in here. FUCK, I wish I could have voted!

Re: The Incredible Amy Winehouse Rate (#4)

Kinda shocked at being the lowest scorer for Frank, 6.97 seems a bit high for an album so overcome with filler.

Re: The Incredible Amy Winehouse Rate (#4)

I wish I had taken part in this. Amy is my everything. Although I would find it very hard to rank which songs I love more than others because so many are up there as her best for me.

Slap on the bronzor, third place is...

3. Valerie - 9.67

Highest score - 10 (2014, Remyky22, runrocketboy, Jwentx, IAmMrDexB, Michael17)
Lowest score - 8 (Aester)

Call it a cover, call it overplayed, I don't care. This is an absolutely fantastic song that overtook The Zutons' original in terms of visibility, and rightfully so. Everything is so full of life that it's hard not to get swept up and want to dance and sing along to it. Jwentz said "it's really satisfying how this song never charted in the US but over the years has become universally known and appreciated".

So tomorrow, hangover permitting, our winner will be revealed! Back To Black vs. Tears Dry On Their Own: who will take it?

It doesn't get better than an 11 vs. a 10 in the finale. I think "Back to Black" will take it.

Re: The Incredible Amy Winehouse Rate (#3)

Of course Back To Black will take it, and rightfully so because it's the definite Amy song, but I'm so happy Tears Dry is in the top two!

Re: The Incredible Amy Winehouse Rate (#3)

"Take the Box" was robbed but I guess I've only got myself to blame for that. "Back to Black" is my second-favorite Amy song, so I hope it wins this.

Re: The Incredible Amy Winehouse Rate (#3)

Two songs stand before me. Ladies this is your last chance to impress the voters, and become Popjustice's top Amy Winehouse song. Prior to tonight, you were asked to prepare a lipsync to "B Baby Boy", by Mutya Buena and Amy Winehouse.

Good luck, and don't fuck it up.

Tears Dry On Their Own: "I know Back To Black is a fierce competitor but I'm not going down without a fight."

Back To Black: "I've come too far to fall at the last hurdle, I'm going to give it my all and go for the crown."

I can reveal

That in second place...

2. Tears Dry On Their Own - 9.78

albumpic_80424_0.jpg

Highest score: 11 (Remyky22)
Lowest score - 8 (lemonsqueezyy)

Tears Dry On Their Own, your sampling of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", strength in your lyrics, and upbeat nature has taken you far in this competition. Jwentz singled out your opening line as "perfection". You can walk away with your head held high, knowing that in many other rates, your final score would've been enough to take the crown.

Now, sashay away.

Re: The Incredible Amy Winehouse Rate (#3)

So that means only one thing: your winner is:

1. Back To Black - 10.27 AKA NEW RATE RECORD (poor Like A Prayer)

500x500.jpg

Highest score - 11 (P'NutButter, Aester, lemonsqueezyy)
Lowest score - 9.5 (IAmMrDexB)

Yes, we have scientifically proven that this is the best Amy Winehouse song ever! Despite the versatility she's shown over this rate, this is the most "Amy" song here, with sweeping strings, a memorable and haunting piano riff, and Amy front and centre with a powerful obituary over a past relationship. Jwentz "feels like this song has become her legacy, and it certainly is strong enough for the task", and lemonsqueezyy said "this song takes the cake for me, especially after her live performance of it on her little MTV Unplugged-esque showcase" (which isn't easy to find online otherwise I'd provide a link).

All that remains is to thank everyone who participated. It's been a joy to revisit Amy's discography, and whilst I've had a few delays with reveals I'm glad we got there in the end.

If anyone wants to help me write a gloating post about the high score for Robyn Jean Fenty's return they're more than welcome.

You've done a great job, Pinkieshy, thank you for this amazing rate! Couldn't be happier with the results.
