The Kelly Family

  1. The Kelly Family is an Irish-American-European music group consisting of a multi-generational family, usually consisting of nine siblings joined occasionally on stage in their earlier years by their father and mother. They play a repertoire of rock, pop, and folk music, and sing in English, Spanish, German, and Basque. The group had chart and concert success around the world, especially in Germany, the Benelux countries, Scandinavia, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Portugal and some in Ireland. They have sold over 20 million albums since the early 1980s and were ranked as the 6th most popular music act in Germany in the 1990s. Despite their American origins, the group is virtually unknown in the United States.

For many years, the group presented a ragamuffin image and a vagabonding lifestyle, travelling around Europe in a double-decker bus and houseboat. Their image was enhanced by their eclectic and often homemade clothing, and the very long hair worn by both male and female members of the band. The Kelly Family began to break up in 2000 and afterwards they performed mostly as individuals or sub-sets of the full group and took on a more mainstream look.

  2. Saw them at Féile '95
"The Kelly Family are freaks" was the general consenus

  3. I remember going on a German school exchange in the 90’s and just thinking they were the strangest band and was surprised how popular they were.

I always found their image really jarring flicking through the likes of Bravo and seeing them next to Backstreet Boys, Tic Tac Toe, Caught in the Act and the other big teen mag bands at the time.

    AllRed and Conan like this.
  4. I do not judge the music by the dress and the scenography

The Kelly Family freaks? 20 million albums sold.

  5. And then they came back in 2017 with a success noone saw coming. Absolutely wild what they achieved and how well received that comeback was. They were everywhere and are still staples on tv shows for old people. Maite didn't join them because during the break she became one of the biggest female schlager singers and is currently a judge on German Idol. Michael "Paddy" Patrick Kelly wasn't a part of it either, but he's quite a successful solo artist, too.

  6. Sad news: Barby Kelly died. RIP.
