The Kids from Fame (and related Fame stuff)

I had seasons 1&2 a decade or so ago; bar a few songs, season 2 was a huge step down in quality.

But I remember the cast saying as much in that Justin Lee Collins reunion thingy, that all the good writers were shipped off to other shows and Fame was left to coast on its past glories. For 5 more years.

Season 1 was just about perfect. I still think season 2 was good. For me, season 3 really started to decline in quality. Still entertaining. I hated that Coco left.

Last night TCM aired the movie of Fame and the Twitter TCM watch Party was so much fun. So much love for Irene Cara was tweeted.

Only just discovered this thread, all these years and I thought I was the only person who still loved listening to my first ever cassette - The Kids From Fame.

I have done some research on the BBC archive this morning.

  • BBC 1 started showing season 1 of Fame with the pilot episode 'Metamorphosis' on Thursday 17 June 1982 at 8:10 pm just after Top Of The Pops and before the Nine O'Clock News.
  • Episode 2 'Passing Grade' followed the week after but due to Wimbledon and the World Cup the next 2 episodes 'Tomorrow's Farewell' and 'Alone In A Crowd' were not shown at all.
  • Episodes 5 to 16 were broadcast out of order up to 29 September 1982 switching to a Wednesday night for the final four episodes just after To The Manor Born and before Points Of View.
  • Season 2 began on BBC 1 on Thursday 21 April 1983 at 8:00 pm after Top Of The Pops and continued in this slot for most of the series of 23 episodes. Many episodes were shown out of order with the U.S.
  • Episode 13 'Relationships' was not broadcast at all.
  • Fame - the movie was first broadcast on U.K. television on BBC1 on Sunday 1 January 1984.
  • Season 3 saw it move to Wednesday nights on BBC 1 beginning 15 February 1984 at 8:10 pm. Throughout March it was broadcast directly after the BBC adaption of The Day Of The Triffids.
  • In April it was moved to an earlier Friday evening slot of 7:30 pm where it remained until the end of the season.
  • The infamous 'Sheer Will' episode where Danny has leukaemia was not shown by the BBC, neither was the Fame On Tour: Happy Birthday Israel concert.
  • Season 4 began on BBC 1 Monday 18 February 1985 at 7:40 pm after Wogan and stayed there for 24 episodes right up to 19 August 1985.
  • This series included Janet Jackson and Nia Peeples as new cast members.
  • BBC 2 began repeating some of the best season 1 and 2 episodes during the summer holiday in July and August 1986. They were shown five days a week at 5:00 pm just after the often repeated dubbed German series Heidi.
  • These repeats meant that the missing episodes 3 and 4 from season 1 and episode 13 from season 2 were finally broadcast in the U.K.
  • The BBC never broadcast seasons 5 or 6 and they have probably never been shown anywhere in the U.K.
Phew
My post from a few years ago detailing the BBC broadcast history of Fame

Thanks for re-posting that, I've often wondered how long Fame ran on the BBC and at what point I stopped watching. I remember how massive season 1 was over here - I joined the fan club, had the sticker album, got every album on cassette from my mum and even named my pet tortoise after Valerie Landsburg! It will be interesting to see how it holds up today.

Time to dust off my leg warmers! I saw the trailer for it last night, I think I'm right in saying this is the first time Now 80s has ever showed a TV programme. The Kids From Fame were my first musical love and I haven't seen Fame since it's original broadcast so I can't wait!

Paging @Baby Clyde!

I'm here and I think I might cry!!! I've actually owned the first 2 seasons on DVD for about a decade but never got round to watching them. Now it's on my actual TV 'Record Series' has been pressed and I'll be watching every single episode for the first time in nearly 40 years!!!

Can't wait to get this one............

or this.....

I love The Kids From Fame Again

Looking forward to hearing Sho Sho Sho Shorofsky and Do The Gimme That again!

Fame will be shown from 9am to 12 noon on Sunday mornings and repeated on Thursday from 7-10pm. Have to say 3 episodes a week is a bit of an undertaking, I'd have preferred 2 to be honest. I wonder if they will show the entire series for the first time on UK TV?

I think the entire first series and possibly the second were repeated on Granada Plus back in the early 2000s.

Just watched the first episode for the first time in ages. Cute to see that a few extras from the original film are in the TV series; probably shows how many times I’ve seen the original film.

The song ‘Miles From Here’ (which is essentially ‘Dogs In The Yard’ Part 2) was written to be included in the original film but wasn’t chosen. The song Coco sings (‘Take Me’) was also written by the same writers of most of the original film soundtrack, which makes me believe that this too was written for the movie but essentially not chosen (probably cos it’s not that great).

I really enjoyed my first Fame marathon this morning. I did think the first episode was the weakest of the bunch, probably due to the focus on Julie who was always an annoying drip and Lori Singer wasn't much of an actress.

What was the deal with that annoying kid in the first episode who disappeared to be replaced by Danny essentially playing the same character in the second?

I already stan Lydia, Coco and Doris all over again and it was wonderful hearing some of those songs for the first time in nearly 40 (!) years again and remembering every word.

He was playing Ralph, a character from the original movie (played by a different actor); unfortunately without any of the charisma that the character had in the film.

I love that they reissued the first Kids From Fame album on CD a few years ago but I'm going to need these reissued too

Annoying that all those songs are stuck on vinyl and cassette!

Speaking of which, the nostalgia that this gives me

That’s my scan of my copy of the BBC cassette on Discogs! It was my first cassette too but it won’t play anymore, so glad they released it on CD.

Starmaker is so beautiful. The Fame version is the best. Judy Collins recorded it on her 1979 album Hard Time for Lovers and it’s dramatically different.
