Gaga ooh lalala

Ahhhhaaahhhhhaaaaahaaaahhhhhhhhh
If you’re a member of Popjustice in 2019, chances are you’re already familiar with the Gaga mythos, but like the Lady herself is so fond of doing, let’s dive in anyway:
After dropping out of NYU to pursue her music career, she cultivated a reputation for her eccentric performances in underground New York clubs, collaborating with her friend and our favorite tour opener Lady Starlight, in burlesque tribute shows with an emphasis on DIY showmanship. She was eventually signed to an Interscope imprint and began writing for other artists. Within the year she broke through with her own debut single, Just Dance. Following it up with 3 more monstrously successful singles and iconic videos, she quickly took the world by storm. After a tumultuous few album campaigns featuring similar chord progressions, demon chickens, and Tony Bennett, she recently carved out a new hyphenate for herself as an Oscar nominated actress, cementing her status as a modern day icon.
A pop culture chameleon, unafraid to reference or not reference, Gaga takes inspiration from her predecessors and peers to leap from dance pop, to jazz, to country, to popstar beauty lines, constantly reinventing herself and rarely visiting the same concept twice. In a few years, we’ll no doubt look back at Lady Gaga as one of the most influential and great artists of our time. She helped to define music in the late 2000’s, pushing pop to the forefront of the cultural conversation. She was an early adopter of social media, be it The Fame Haus videos on YouTube or being the first person to reach a million Twitter followers. The early, scrappy, days of making pyrotechnics with hairspray, hot gluing her outfits together on plane rides, and her self aggrandizing have a millennial spirit that is often overlooked when discussing her career. After all, “When I look back on my life it’s not that I don’t want to see things exactly as they happened, it’s just that I prefer to remember them in an artistic way. And truthfully the lie of it all is much more honest because I invented it”, is what sites like Instagram are all about, no?
In that regard, I hope you all join me in mythologizing her storied, diverse, often hilarious, and always colorful discography. This forum wouldn’t be quite the same without her wild career over the past 11 years.
To spare us all a bit of filler, we’ll be scoring just a select few tracks from Cheek to Cheek and A Star is Born, and a couple extras I thought were worth it. As always, rate everything from 1-10, with half scores and one 11 allowed. I’ll be accepting commentary throughout the run. PM able list of all tracks will be at the bottom of this post, as well as a Spotify playlist.
So without any further ado...
