The Lady Gaga Rate (Haus Labs now available)

My first to go from Born This Way would be Unicorn, Black Jesus and Bad Kids (I love the latter two) but I suspect it will The Queen, Black Jesus and Fashion of His Love.

Til It Happens To You

Average: 5.92
Highest: 11 x 1 (@daninternational)
10 x 3 (@Sprockrooster, @eliminathan, @Dijah.)
Lowest: 0 x 2 (@Hurricane Drunk, @Mirwais Ahmadzaï)

Our first 11 to leave. A poignant, emotional ballad cowritten with Diane Warren for the 2015 documentary on campus rape, The Hunting Ground. The song had a notable, powerful moment at the Oscars (before one was unjustly given to a Bond theme no one remembers) but doesn’t seem particularly significant to Gaga’s discography which probably explains its placing here. It did help lead the way to the emotional honesty we saw in Joanne.

@sfmartin echoes “A heartfelt and poignant ballad. Some of her vocal inflections are annoying. The chorus melody is quite catchy but poor production choices make it feel disjointed. Overall I prefer it sung live.@madgemad joins them in saying “The song isn't amazing, but fuck, that performance at the Oscars is powerful.@Dijah. gives it a 10 and says “That hurt.@Music Is Life was fairly right in saying “This was a nice enough ballad. It doesn’t deserve to be tanked, but it will be.@Petit nain des Îles was “more or less feeling it until the drums came. They don’t really fit the vibe she’s going for at all. Not a fan of her delivery as well.” And @Untouchable Ace says it “ Sounds like it wasn't made in this century”. @Laurence voices what I imagine most of us voters feel considering it’s early dismissal: “The content of this song make me sad of course, however I don't think it sounds great at all. The beginning of the bridge is where it picks up but after that, well...” as does @Laura VanderboobenI'm sorry I know it's an important song but let's be real it just is not good, and she got ha Oscar anyway so no harm no foul right?@R27 acknowledges it’s importance as well, saying “It's not one of her most interesting songs and I don't ever search this out, but it's message is one of her most important.@Ana Raquel confuses the grammys with the Oscars I think but, I mean, all the same, eh? “It caused more impact on me before. Should still have won the Grammy over Sam.@jtm says “To be honest she has much better ballads” and on the flipside @Sprockrooster thinks it’s “Her most important and strongest ballad.” “Musically this isn’t one of her best ballads” starts @Ashling92but I very much appreciate the sentiment. It can relate to so many different things, but really applies to anyone who has gone something particularly difficult or devastating.

And @daninternational gave it his 11, noting “Heartbreaking, necessary, and something at the time I really related to. Gaga's ballads don't always do me, but this one is impeccable

(they issued thirty remixes of this song, landing her her 14th #1 at the top of the Dance Club chart fff why)

Well I feel validated.

I knew it wouldn't do well, but didn't think I'd be the first to lose my 11! While I do love the song, it's the meaning that got it my 11. I'm grateful it exists, the result doesn't matter too much to me.

Yeah this was the thing, it's up there with Praying by Kesha (and Spring För Livet) as the music that makes me acknowledge, process and deal with my shit.

*goes to check out the 30 remixes*

I gave Till It Happens To You an 8 for its message, but as a song I find it too uncomfortable for me to listen to on the regular.

I was so pissed that this didn’t win the Oscar - I thought she had it in the bag, especially because Sam Smith’s Bond offering was so unmemorable.

But that oscars performance - yeesh! Even though the intention and message behind it were powerful, it was so damn pitchy I’ve not been able to watch it since. I put almost all of it down to emotion but still - it was painful to listen to in parts and not just because of the message.

Not surprised at this being out of the rate now, I kind of forget about it.

It's one of her worst ballads, up there with Dope. The message is very important but that does not make the song good. I gave it a 6.
