"Brown Eyes" didn't deserve this. I know it's not what the fans of "The Fame" are looking for, but a lovely song it is.
I basically said all of it in the commentary: it's one of my favorite album tracks from "The Fame" with a score of 8,5 and I really enjoy it. Glad that it received high scores from
@Phonetics Boy and
@Lila - better listen to the songs linked (if you already haven't), since you'll probably like them.
And here's the spotlight dedicated to her unreleased tracks I was talking about earlier (which happened sooner than I thought). All of these are sonically similar to "Brown Eyes" (and "Again") and definitely have Stafani Germanotta band vibes, since they were all written with Rob Fusari in the earliest recording sessions (during the first half of 2006).
First of all, my favorite song out of these, which I actually consider better than "Brown Eyes".
@VitaminBee already mentioned it, it's "Let Love Down". Such a gorgeous ballad, with lovely melody and a passionate delivery. I absoluetly adore the chorus. Such a shame it was never officially released:
Another song that has already been mentioned (now by
@SyPOPhantic I think) is "Fooled Me Again". This one probably has the most similarities with "Brown Eyes", both lyrically and sonically. The backing vocals are a lovely addition and it's another wasted opportunity to be included on the album. At least she performed it live two times in 2009:
Then, let's go way back with this one. "Wonderful" is the very first song Lady Gaga has written with Rob Fusari and it definitely sounds that way, with its rock-influenced instrumental. She performed this one a few times in 2006. Yet another example of how she can write a timeless ballad with a, well... wonderful chorus:
"Oh Well" is another product of those early sessions with Rob, and I must admit it's my least favorite out of these songs. I know it's a demo, but the production doesn't really add to the song and sounds clunky at places. But, once again, the chorus sounds like some kind of a standard that I've heard before, which is something so damn impressive for her during the time. And I love the middle-8:
Last, but not the least, is a snippet of "Musicland". It sounds dramatic and very promising from those 20 seconds.It remains one of my most demanded unreleased Lady Gaga songs I want to hear in full:
I'm just finding out that "Musicland" was supposed to be performed at Much Music Awards in 2009. Interesting...
Also, there's another unreleased song with a rockier (and more uptempo) sound called "Broken Drum Machine", but it's mostly instrumental with some ad-libs (with the line 'we'll never be apart'), and it actually sounds great. Who knows if Gaga even properly recorded it.
There's a Rob Fusari version, that I reasonably didn't listen to in full.
Actually, there are some more of those great piano-guitar songs that she recorded during the time ("Spin U Around", "Yay Ha" etc.), but I think these five represent all the good sides of it.
As
@soratami agreed with me about "Brown Eyes", I consider all of these have some of classic feel to it, too, which I think is so apparent because they are influenced by different rock legends of the past.
