Butterfly is not average.
I guess a 5.5 average isn't exactly 5, but it seems to be splitting hairs to refer to it as average+.5.
Oh wow, "Open Arms" has a Spanish version. The more you know.
The Beautiful Ones - yeah, if we had to lose a track from Butterfly, I'm glad it's that one.
If It's Over is gone too soon. I would have loved a cover of A Natural Woman from Mariah but I guess I'll just stick with Kelly's. And Carol's now that I've heard it.
I remember reading this when I went through your rate. I wanted to say something so I'm glad I can now - @push the button I'm really sorry you went through that and I'm giving you an online hug.
I absolutely stan Open Arms. I knew deep down it wouldn't last that long, but am grateful it at least wasn't among the first 10 songs booted out and beat an more iconic cover in the form of Endless Love. This performance on Top of The Pops back in the day, man she's truly beautiful!
I remember watching the Billboard chart show during One Sweet Day’s iconic 16-week run at the top. When they got bored of playing One Sweet Day every week they started playing Open Arms instead dddd.
Billboard with it's great taste and low key promo there.
X ta lovely x
'Open Arms' is one of her best covers, the drama, then euphoria when the second chorus crashes in and her long notes just soar... Daydream is her best album, I can't with it anymore it's too good.
I'm glad Open Arms was a single in the UK and a top 5 hit too.
...which is something One Sweet Day never achieved in the UK!
The rate had been so fun! I’m looking forward to part 2. I already have an idea of my 11!
Quite late but I can't believe a track from Butterfly has left already, let alone the majestic The Beautiful Ones. I heard Mariah's version first, but that lead me to the original and it's now my favourite Prince song and a definite highlight of Butterfly. Mariah's version is exquisite.
@AdzBrown I could have written your exact post.
Very true! #6 always felt too low for that particular classic somehow.
Hello. Just one cut for today and one cut tomorrow, sorry!! Weekends are particularly busy for me! We'll be returning to our normal 2-a-day schedule on Monday.
But first, some good news or our ballad loving voters . . .
The ballads will be getting a reprieve for the next few cuts . . .
I don't know how you do it
Never felt so sweet before
I don't wanna lose it
Give me all your love

"To Be Around You" is the eighth track from "Emotions". Its lyrics were written solely by Mariah, its music was written by Mariah and David Cole, and it was arranged and produced by Mariah alongside David Cole and Robert Clivillés (aka C+C Music Factory). "To Be Around You" was written and produced as a tribute to Cheryl Lynn's debut single,"Got To Be Real", a US top 20 hit from 1978 - a song Mariah would go on to cover a few years later as a duet with Patti LaBelle.
This was one of the biggest rediscoveries of the rate for me. I mean, I've always enjoyed this but while rating the album something really clicked with this track and I ended up playing it on loop for hours - and then added it to my "Mariah faves" playlist (which has nearly 100 songs now dddd). I'm a little bummed this is one of the first uptempos to leave us, but I'm just glad a few of you discovered and fell in love with this, too!
@Music Is Life (10) — "Another fun, dance-y number, I love the piano throughout this, and the chorus is a highlight as well. A lot of fun, easy to get up and dance to, with relatable lyrics. The ending is amazing."
@ohaimanabu (10) — "One of her first big pop moments! SO GOOD."
@RUNAWAY (10) — "this end of the album JAM absolutely deserves more recognition. It's an absolute bop and a half."
@If You Go (10) — "Did not realize till I had to rate this again that this song is all chorus! Not that that is a bad thing anyway it's definitely one of her catchiest up-tempos!"
@WhatKindOfKylie? (9) — "From that gospel meets 90's house intro, you know you're going to be in a treat with this! I love how happy and uplifting her vocals are on it especially. That 'Just wanna give to it you, wanna give it to you' bridge hook - wow! Fab stuff all around."
@abael (9) — "I'm living for the later album track slayer, first Prisoner, now this. Mariah always wanted you to pick up the album, that's for sure."
@pop3blow2 (8.5) — "A bit of a basic bop, but fun. Has some Motown vibe I like."
@Seventeen Days (8.25) — "I'm feeling some disco vibes creeping into this one, and I fully approve. This slaps."
@Imagineitwasus (8) — "Sent From Up Above found imitated and successfully duplicated in a dancier fashion."
@bonnieetclyde (7) — "sounds a bit 'phoned in', as if it was added to the album last minute because they needed one more song."
@godspeed (6.5) — "Just like 'You're So Cold,' this one feels a bit too similar to 'Emotions' and 'Make It Happen' - in a less memorable way - to really make an impact in my opinion. I do believe however that with a nice remix or a rap feature it could have been a great introduction to Mariah's hip hop side that would later blossom on 'Daydream.'"
@Veeis (6) — "It sounds fun and I like to bop for it."
@DominoDancing (5) — "Generic up-tempo."
I LOVE that cover!!!
'To Be Around You' has become a standout for me (of the album tracks at least) from the Emotions album the last few years. It sounds so dated, but has a really great soulful vibe I like. I'd just like the clapping on the chorus to be a little bit higher in the mix.
Well if this is considered good news for the ballad-loving voters, I'm definitely anti-ballad loving voters.
I knew it was going to be To Be Around You! Should have stayed longer than some other up-tempos left.
HOW DARE YALL....
