The Mariah Carey Discography Rate Pt.1 • FINISHED

  1. Oh my god, I’m not sure, to put it nicely, that ‘My All’ from all her material is the right track to point out her ‘voice degradation’.
  2. Vision of Love. Breakdown. My All. Such heavy hitters!

    ‘Breakdown’ was one of contenders for my 11 - I decided to go with ‘Melt Away’ in the end and now I regret slightly.

    I have the song very strongly associated with my ex and the time he broke up with me (my first and so far only serious relationship) and left our flat to live with his new partner telling me that because I’m a psychologist break-ups have to be easy for me(?!). Cruel. The production, the lyrics, the melody and the video to an extend capture that feeling of sudden coldness and cognitive disonance perfectly. Because what do you do when somebody you're so devoted to suddenly just stops loving you? I was (at least in my opinion) operating well during a day, going through motions, feeling like a robot, only to come home and - literally - break down and cry and feel everything and nothing. Mariah got that feeling expressed to a T.

    "All I Want For Christmas Is You" was released as the lead single from Mariah's first Christmas album, "Merry Christmas", on November 28, 1994. It was written, composed, arranged, and produced by Mariah and Walter Afanasieff. "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is not only Mariah's highest-selling single, it's also the best selling Christmas single by a female artist, the best selling modern-day Christmas song (bested only by Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" and "Silent Night"), and is the 12th highest-selling single of all time. As of 2017, it had sold over 16 million copies in total worldwide. Mariah has released both a successful children's book and an animated movie based on the song.

    While "All I Want For Christmas Is You" has managed to re-chart every year since its original release, its popularity seems to be growing year-by-year. In 2018, it reached new chart peaks in several territories, including going to #1 in Australia and #3 in the US. Overall, the single has peaked at #1 in 18 different countries, and that number is sure to grow this year.

    Mariah has re-released and re-recorded the song several times over the years: first in 2000, with the So So Def Remix receiving an animated music video, then as Mariah's New Dance Mix in 2009, the re-recorded "All I Want For Christmas Is You (Extra Festive)" was included on her second Christmas album, "Merry Christmas II You", in 2010, and, finally, "All I Want For Christmas Is You (SuperFestive!)" with Justin Bieber followed in 2011. For its 25th anniversary this year, Mariah is re-releasing the single again on 7" vinyl and green cassette formats - and is re-releasing the original "Merry Christmas" album as a new 2-disc Deluxe Anniversary Edition, bundled with her long-sought-after 1994 St. John The Divine concert, as well. Go pre-order a copy so she can get her 19th #1 this year!

    A classic... literally a classic. I don't even like Christmas music, but I like this. ddddd I kind of resent that this has overshadowed her whole discography and become the one track everyone knows her for... but I also can't deny how iconic it is. And since Mariah is a huge Christmas lover, I'm sure she doesn't mind so much (and the royalties can't hurt either).

    @bonnieetclyde (11) — "THE BEST Christmas song ever. No contest. A classic. I love it, even when it's not Christmas time. I generally dislike Christmas songs too, so it's impressive that I love it so much."

    @Sprockrooster (11) — "I know this dramatic and over the top, but that is just how festive I am. Doing this rate now it is still 167 days till Christmas and I am all for it! In all seriousness there is no song in this rate or even her entire discography that exudes so much joy and nostalgia that can make me wish for Christmas on the hottest summer day. Aside from the immaculate production the utter joy from Mariah is felt through and through. A true gift to be blessed every year on the first of November when I first play my Christmas playlist and this is obviously the best candidate for it. And how awesome would it be if a Christmas song would finally win a rate. Also, upcoming: Sprocky's Christmas rate in November!! Vote for Mariah!"

    @Music Is Life (10) — "Iconic Christmas BOP. I mean, there really isn't much I can say about this, that hasn't been said. It's a great song, lots of fun and perfect all year round. Not the best Christmas song I've ever heard though."

    @P'NutButter (10) — "Never ever get tired of this. It better get #1 this Xmas!"

    @WhatKindOfKylie? (10) — "The ultimate Christmas classic, and one that just gets bigger and bigger each and every festive period! Yes, it is somewhat overplayed, but when it comes to a song just as epic as this, it so should be! From those opening notes to that effortless last belt of the chorus, this is just a triumph all the way through. Here's to the song finally getting it's rightful place at #1 this coming Christmas upon its 25th anniversary too..."

    @Jimmyandroid (10) — "As much as it's played I never get bored of it. It's so joyful and deserving of its success."

    @ohaimanabu (10) — "Absolute Classic. I honestly considered giving this my 11 just for how one of a kind it is, and its impact 25 years on. NOT EVERYBODY HAS THAT!"

    @abael (10) — "This is after my routine -3 points for Christmas tracks, it's that good."

    @Pinky25 (10) — "The world's favorite Christmas song."

    @Ana Raquel (10) — "I'm not a fan of Christmas songs in general, but this is way too iconic I can't hate it."

    @pop3blow2 (10) — "I mean, I get it. Some people don't like xmas or xmas music for very valid reasons. I love xmas music & even though this song gets played to death each year, I still love the fact that Mariah did that! This song will outlive every other song in her discography & be played every xmas until the world ends."

    @ysev (10) — "Does this even need commentary? A classic that will be a Christmas staple forever. Queen of Christmas!"

    @lalaclairi_ (10) — "Pure joy."

    @Slice of Life (10) — "I hate Xmas music but this will always be an exception. Anyone who doesn't give this a 10 (or 11) should be banned from the forum."

    @evilsin (10) — "Invented Christmas."

    @mokitsu (10) — "Truly the greatest Christmas song of all time. I live for pressing play every midnight on November 1st every year. It makes me so happy that this song gets its dues each and every year - here's hoping 2019 is the one it finally hits #1."

    @Seventeen Days (10) — "One of two Christmas songs that are allowed to be played in my house between January 1st and November 1st. (the other is 'Last Christmas' by Wham!)"

    @Blond (10) — "Name one other song from the last 25 years that is this instantly recognisable, well-loved and that will go on to be remembered for decades to come. It's untouchable and an undisputed classic."

    @Oceandrive (10) — "I didn't want to be that girl, but I am. Really the legacy of this song is something quite remarkable. She has created a standard and written a juggernaut of a record that gets more powerful with each passing year. It's like the best Isa or bond in history."

    @Imagineitwasus (9) — "What can I say that hasn't been said before? This is a classic. But I don't want this to win this thing, so I'm not giving it a 10."

    @If You Go (9) — "The modern Christmas classic. I am so happy that in the last few years that radio decided to start hammering this every Christmas as opposed to the Christmas Song (I'm sure they still play this too much)."

    @londonrain (9) — "Okay, I can't NOT give this a high score, but I swear, if you people make this the winner over something from her actual non-seasonal work, then this rate is irretrievably broken."

    @DominoDancing (9) — "As far as Christmas pop songs go, this is probably as good as it gets."

    @Veeis (8.5) — "Undeniable christmas classic."

    @japanbonustrack (8) — "An obvious 10/10 but I don't think this should win the rate."

    @godspeed (6.5) — "Look, the thing is I hate Christmas music. I do agree that 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' is different because it's not just a Holiday classic but a pop one as well. I understand why it's so popular and it's cute... but it is still Christmas music, it has been absolutely overplayed for me and if I have to rate the song honestly, I don't think I'd give it more than a 6 and a half. I'm still rooting for Mariah to get her 19th #1 with it this year though!"

  6. Wow, excluding ‘Fantasy’ and ‘Honey’ I personally find the Top 5 to be quite unexpected!

  10. All I Want For Christmas Is You is a classic and even though I hear it about 40,000 times around Christmas, it brings me joy every time. She really did that! I maybe resent it a lil bit, because it's one of only Mariah songs a lot of my close friends like, (along with #Beautiful ddd) but it also is nice to share it with them. I will make them Butterfly stans one day!
  11. It's funny seeing all these UK Mariah performances from the first 2 albums. As a child she completely passed me by until Ill Be There. I literally have no recollection of ever hearing any of her songs until I'll Be There. Perhaps she was just not poppy enough for 11 year old me. I vaguely remember seeing the odd tiny article or song words in Smash Hits.

  12. I've watched this performance so many times. The hand on the hip!!! What a powerhouse, though it is not surprising her voice was unable to sustain said power. I was winded just watching.

  13. Both "Daydream" and "Butterfly" still have two songs each left in the running to win the rate . . .

    But after this cut, that will no longer be the case . . .

    "Always Be My Baby" was released as the third single from Mariah's fifth studio album, "Daydream", on March 9, 1996. Its lyrics were written by Mariah and it was composed, arranged, and produced by Mariah, Jermaine Dupri, and Manuel Seal. "Always Be My Baby" was sampled on Fifth Harmony's "Like Mariah", from their 2015 debut album, "Reflection".

    After the blockbuster success of "Music Box", Mariah was given a bit more leeway with her choice of producers during the recording of her follow-up album. Wanting to broaden her sound and incorporate elements of the hip-hop music she loved, Mariah approached Jermaine Dupri, who was a rising star in the hip-hop scene at the time, to collaborate due to his "very distinct vibe". Mariah also chose to work with the renowned R&B-producer Manuel Seal, who, at the time, was mostly known for his work with Da Brat and the girl group Xscape, both of whom would later appear on the Mr. Dupri remix of "Always Be My Baby". In a 2003 interview with Billboard, she would elaborate on the trio's collaboration: "Jermaine, Manuel and I sat down, and Jermaine programmed the drums. I told him the feel I wanted and Manuel put his hands on the keyboards and I started singing the melody. We went back and forth with the bridge and the B-section. I had the outline of the lyrics and started singing 'always be my baby' off the top of my head".

    "Always Be My Baby" would go on to become another huge hit for, peaking in the top 20 of nearly every market in which it was released. In the US, it became Mariah's eleventh #1 single on the Hot 100, tying her with Madonna and Whitney Houston as the female solo artists with the most number-one singles; she would, of course, break that record with the release of "Honey" the following year. The single would also peak at #1 in Canada - her eighth there - and at #3 in the UK. It has sold over 1.6 million physical copies in total worldwide.

    I know a lot of y'all rate "Butterfly" as the best album of this era of her career - and, ultimately, I would agree - but "Daydream" is right up there neck-and-neck with it in my opinion. "Butterfly" really was her coming out record where she became the artist she really wanted to be, but those seeds were planted with songs like this and its b-side, "Slipping Away". It's interesting now to look back at the trajectory of her career in hindsight and see the R&B elements begin to trickle in as she was slowly given more creative control over her sound. I've always thought this sounded closer to her earlier material - maybe a little more carefree and laidback - than what followed, but now I'm able to pick up on the influences and it makes me appreciate her music that much more. With the idea in mind of Tommy trying to force her into a cookie-cutter box of adult contemporary balladry, her choosing to work with Jermaine Dupri and Manuel Seal anyway kinda feels like a bit of a fuck-you to him ddd. Musically rebellious icon.

    @Music Is Life (10) — "A mid-tempo, but slightly up-beat song, this is another highlight and was a great single choice. I love the production more than anything else on this, but the whole song is great."

    @WhatKindOfKylie? (10) — "Well, what can be said about this all time classic that hasn't already been said before? Not a lot I imagine. This is just an utter masterpiece, bittersweet, hopeful and poignant all rolled into one."

    @Jimmyandroid (10) — "If I'm ever trying to sneak on a Mariah song to friends who don't appreciate her as I do, this is my go to. A solid gold crowd-pleaser."

    @GimmeWork (10) — "I mean it doesn't get much more classic than this!"

    @Womanizer (10) — "This was also a contender for my 11 and I love the album version and remix equally."

    @The Hot Rock (10) — "I'll always associate this with when at one of my friend's high school grad party a few of us sang this on karaoke and I was tipsy and started crying. A mess." (that's cute tho!! dd)

    @tylerc904 (10) — "When I think of Mariah songs that seem to be held in the highest regard by the older members of my family, this one takes the prize. My parents, aunts and uncles etc. usually groan when my playlists churn out Mimi classics, but this one always elicits boppery. Funny that it isn't the smash One Sweet Day was, or the 'classic' Fantasy was, but has sort of carved its own lane among her biggest songs."

    @Pinky25 (10) — "As a child I loved this video and I have a lot of happy memories attached to this song."

    @pop3blow2 (10) — "One of my favorite Mariah singles. Her vocals here are amazing. I hear so much of this even in modern pop. One of her most influential songs, I think. Perfect hybrid of pop/r&b."

    @evilsin (10) — "One of the catchiest songs in Mariah's discography. The key change is perfect here."

    @Seventeen Days (10) — "More like 'Always Be My Bop'. This track has a special place in my heart, and every time I hear it, I'm right back in my bedroom listening to 'Daydream' on the CD player my mom bought me for Christmas."

    @Blond (10) — "This is a perfect pop song by any measures."

    @Oceandrive (10) — "Another strong contender of the 11. This song sits near the peak of her career and encapsulates everything that is great about Mariah. The melody is ageless and it sits just the right side of sentimental without being cheesy. The last 30 seconds are everything that is right about 90's RnB music."

    @ysev (9.5) — "A sweet tune. It's almost bubblegum sweet without being overbearing. The balance... wheew."

    @Veeis (9.5) — "That's one of the most instant songs that I've ever heard, it's infectious. Also THE AD-LIBS, those are one of her bests here."

    @Imagineitwasus (9) — "Sumptuous vocal work."

    @godspeed (8.5) — "I know damn well any comment on this legendary hit single is unnecessary. This is Mariah at one of her many peaks: the songwriting is stellar as usual (just the opening lines manage to capture a moment and make the listener picture it), this chorus is addicting and gets stuck in your head so easily, and, most importantly, this song puts a huge smile on your face and you cannot not sing along to the 'do-do-do-uh, do-do-do-do-do-dun's."

    @bonnieetclyde (8) — "bit of a basic bop but a bop none-the-less."

    @abael (7) — "I feel bad for not liking this as I feel I should. Never loved it though."

    @DominoDancing (7) — "It's a cute bop, but not up there with her best."

  15. I love "All I Want For Christmas Is You" but my favorite Christmas song is Kelly's "Underneath The Tree." I'm just biased cause I was a huge Kelly fan before I got into Mariah but it is a huge pop bop, and I think was probably influenced by the classic.
    Love the top 5 and love to see my 11 hanging on. I'd like it to be:
    4.) The Roof
    3.) Emotions
    2.)/1.) Honey and Fantasy.
    No matter what I won't be upset though.
  16. Well, fuck me.

    It was a coin toss between All I Want for Christmas Is You and Always Be My Baby for my 11, but in the end I'm glad I gave it to the former.

    What a fucking iconic song Christmas is. I know it's overplayed to death from, like, November, but it still gives me the feels all of these years later. She gives us a fucking fantastic performance, the production literally paints us a picture of snow and fireplaces and that moment during the bridge always gives me goosebumps. A classic for the ages, people.

    Always Be My Baby is Mariah at a new peak in her career. She sells the fucking shit out of that song and that melody is undeniable. The outro is everything and it was a time when her videos would perfectly compliment every song she released. I mean... Who hasn't done that swinging into a tire bit with Mariah in ha head. Amirite, ladies?

    No scores below a 7 for Always Be My Baby? We love to see it.

    I remember watching the Billboard chart show every week at the time this was released and seeing it debut at #2 (behind Celine Dion’s Because You Loved Me, which was my mum’s favourite song and had replaced One Sweet Day at #1). It stayed at #2 for a whole month before going to #1 for a couple of weeks - and then going back to #2 again for what seemed to be an age! In 24 years I’ve never once got tired of the song, and it still sits in my all-time top five songs (with Fantasy not far behind).

    The song is so strong that it does well even with substantial changes in structure and genre:

    I do want to know how Mariah got on that tyre swing, though, given that the only way off it seems to be by jumping in the water...

  18. Always Be My Baby is a gorgeous song and one of the best from the Daydream, it's a deserved placement for that song. Also the high averages are something else, this whole rate is undeniable.
  19. While the average is incredible I would have placed this in the top 3 of this particular top 5, maybe even in 2nd place.
  20. Always Be My Baby, is just a heartwarming gem. It has a touch of sadness about it, but you can't help but feel positive vibes whenever you hear it. One of her most touching and also temporizing songs too at the same time. Fully worthy of a top 5 placement.
