The Mariah Carey Discography Rate Pt.1 • FINISHED

Oh, I think it works without him, but I consider the version with ODB to be the definitive version of that remix, and I rated it accordingly.
I see. I kind of considered it a grey area, since the OP says to rate the version you prefer except for the remixes - but the solo version of the remix is the same remix it just lacks the ODB verse.

I'd probably lower it a point or two if I was explicitly rating the ODB version but I don't mind keeping my score as-is (unless @vague thinks otherwise).

Now that I've received @Oceandrive's ballot, shall we get started on today's eliminations?

So Blessed and Just To Hold You Once Again feel like they’re heading for the bottom ten, and I’m already mad about it.

Hmm...

"Just To Hold You Once Again" is the eighth track from Mariah's third studio album "Music Box". It was written, arranged, and produced once again by Mariah and Walter Afanasieff, while Mariah wrote the lyrics to the song by herself as well.

I've always thought of this as a bit of a hidden gem in her discography; it never seems to get much love from the Lambs - or even Mariah herself - and, of course, came second from last here. "Just To Hold You Once Again" is rather lovely, but she has so many beautiful ballads that it kind of gets lost in the shuffle, huh? Even our higher scorers for the track didn't have much praise for it in their commentaries dddd. While I actually do quite like this, even I don't have much to say about it. Oop.

@Music Is Life (8.5) — "This is pretty good, but not one of the better ballads on here. Very relatable, and always gorgeous vocals of course."

@pop3blow2 (8.3) — "A sweet song, but sort of forgettable."

@DominoDancing (7) — "Quite pretty, but in this case I actually prefer the quiet first half over the 'big' second half. Just fits the melody better."

@bonnieetclyde (6.5) — "I found I was a little bored listening to this one. Not particularly memorable."

@abael (6) — "Listened to it twice in a row, still all I have is 'nondescript'."

@evilsin (6) — "What kind of 'My All' prototype?"

@godspeed (5.5) — "I've been giving a lot of 5s on Music Box and I think that it sums up what I think about most of the songs, including this one: they're not bad but they're mostly underwhelming."

@Seventeen Days (5) — "This one didn't really have anything that kept my attention. It feels like it's going through the motions to meet the ballad quota."

@P'NutButter (4) — "meh"

@japanbonustrack (4) — "Lacks emotion, I can feel the void."

@If You Go (2.5) — "I like a good Mariah ballad, and this is not one of them. As I go over in commentary on All I've Ever Wanted my brain refused to remember either of these ballads, this song got a whole half point more than the other one because I do have a distinct memory of thinking this one was better so there's that."

@WhatKindOfKylie? (2) — "I just struggle with this one. Although I've warmed up more to Music Box than I have done before, this is a song I can never see the appeal in, and just find it a bit of a bore to be honest!"

Aw, this one is rather lovely... but when even I could only muster up a 7 for it I figured it was likely to be toast with the Music Box haters around.

In another rate I could easily see myself giving it at least a 9 because Mariah's voice sounds amazing on this, but there's just way too much of her material that is better than this.

(Having said that, can we please lose my zero ASAP?)

He / Him / His
My lowest score in the rate (at a 4.5; talent!). I sort of felt like I was being harsh on some of the Music Box tracks because I’m less familiar with it than the rest of the albums here but relistening sort of reinforced why and ‘Just to Hold You Once Again’ feels like the apex of Mimi sort of going through the motions outside of the singles.

It’s not even bad, just sort useless to me.

Finally home from work, so let's cut our second song of the day...

"Do You Know Where You're Going To (Theme From Mahogany)" is one of five new tracks on Mariah's first compilation album "#1's", and is a cover of Diana Ross's 1975 US #1 single. It was written by Gerry Goffin and Michael Masser and produced by Steven "Stevie J." Jordan and Mariah herself. "Do You Know..." was only included on international versions of "#1's", but was later released as a stand-alone digital single in the US as well. Apparently, it was intended to feature on the standard tracklisting for the album, but those plans were scrapped once J. Lo and/or her team or w/e also decided to include a cover of the track on her debut album thus it ended up being regulated to a bonus track instead.

Truthfully, I've never cared for this track in any of its various incarnations, but at least Mariah delivers vocally here.

@Pinky25 (9) — "I love Diana's version and I can understand why it resonates with so many people."

@DominoDancing (9) — "It's a great song, and it's well performed here."

@Music Is Life (8.75) — "This is cute, but probably the 'worst' of the new songs here."

@Jimmyandroid (8) — "I've always enjoyed her whistle notes on this."

@ohaimanabu (8) — "Always had a soft spot for Mariah's rendition of this song!"

@londonrain (8) — "The audacity of J. Lo recording this. She literally doesn't have the range."

@tylerc904 (7.5) — "I always forget she recorded this. A year before J. Lo. Suspect."

@godspeed (7.5) — "I love 'Do You Know Where You're Going To' - mostly because it was sampled by Big Sean and Travis Scott a few years ago but this is a different story and probably not the best one so whatever - and I love Mariah Carey's voice on soft ballads like this one, so you do the math."

@japanbonustrack (7.5) — "Beautiful cover. Too bad the single release was cancelled, I wonder if that has to do with another Sony artist recording it for their album..."

@mokitsu (7.25) — "I love how this sonically feels like a pre-cursor to best of Rainbow, it's definitely not out of place on the French edition of that album. The song itself is not the strongest but I think it really suits her late 90s voice. I actually really enjoy Jennifer's version too, I like to play them back to back."

@bonnieetclyde (7) — "I've heard better versions of this song. I think I might even prefer J.Lo's version! Can someone do a mash-up please, it would be so funny." (oh waow... but here you go)

@Imagineitwasus (7) — "I remember this being slaughtered at the last Mariah rate. I think it's cute and hope it won't end bottom of the list like last time."

@If You Go (6.5) — "This was my lowest rated song last time round, but it's grown on me considerably!"

@WhatKindOfKylie? (5) — "Only half points here. And that's all done to Mariah's dreamy vocals and very faithful version of the original. Which just happens to be such a dull song, I can't go any higher."

@ysev (4) — "My lowest score simply because I never liked this song. No matter who sings it, I just can't connect to it."

@abael (3) — "Who composed this? It makes Mariah seem like she doesn't know what a note is. Ghastly song."
