Finally home from work, so let's cut our second song of the day...
"Do You Know Where You're Going To (Theme From Mahogany)" is one of five new tracks on Mariah's first compilation album "#1's", and is a cover of Diana Ross's 1975 US #1 single. It was written by Gerry Goffin and Michael Masser and produced by Steven "Stevie J." Jordan and Mariah herself. "Do You Know..." was only included on international versions of "#1's", but was later released as a stand-alone digital single in the US as well. Apparently, it was intended to feature on the standard tracklisting for the album, but those plans were scrapped once J. Lo and/or her team or w/e also decided to include a cover of the track on her debut album thus it ended up being regulated to a bonus track instead.
Truthfully, I've never cared for this track in any of its various incarnations, but at least Mariah delivers vocally here.
@Pinky25 (9) — "I love Diana's version and I can understand why it resonates with so many people."
@DominoDancing (9) — "It's a great song, and it's well performed here."
@Music Is Life (8.75) — "This is cute, but probably the 'worst' of the new songs here."
@Jimmyandroid (8) — "I've always enjoyed her whistle notes on this."
@ohaimanabu (8) — "Always had a soft spot for Mariah's rendition of this song!"
@londonrain (8) — "The audacity of J. Lo recording this. She literally doesn't have the range."
@tylerc904 (7.5) — "I always forget she recorded this. A year before J. Lo. Suspect."
@godspeed (7.5) — "I love 'Do You Know Where You're Going To' - mostly because it was sampled by Big Sean and Travis Scott a few years ago but this is a different story and probably not the best one so whatever - and I love Mariah Carey's voice on soft ballads like this one, so you do the math."
@japanbonustrack (7.5) — "Beautiful cover. Too bad the single release was cancelled, I wonder if that has to do with another Sony artist recording it for their album..."
@mokitsu (7.25) — "I love how this sonically feels like a pre-cursor to best of Rainbow, it's definitely not out of place on the French edition of that album. The song itself is not the strongest but I think it really suits her late 90s voice. I actually really enjoy Jennifer's version too, I like to play them back to back."
@bonnieetclyde (7) — "I've heard better versions of this song. I think I might even prefer J.Lo's version! Can someone do a mash-up please, it would be so funny."
(oh waow... but here you go)
@Imagineitwasus (7) — "I remember this being slaughtered at the last Mariah rate. I think it's cute and hope it won't end bottom of the list like last time."
@If You Go (6.5) — "This was my lowest rated song last time round, but it's grown on me considerably!"
@WhatKindOfKylie? (5) — "Only half points here. And that's all done to Mariah's dreamy vocals and very faithful version of the original. Which just happens to be such a dull song, I can't go any higher."
@ysev (4) — "My lowest score simply because I never liked this song. No matter who sings it, I just can't connect to it."
@abael (3) — "Who composed this? It makes Mariah seem like she doesn't know what a note is. Ghastly song."
