The Mariah Carey Discography Rate Pt.1 • FINISHED

Yeah, me mentioning any singles I'd like out shouldn't have people worried when there are people throwing around ones and twos like this. I doubt I was the high scorer here, but I'm not going to be much of a deciding factor here. If I was, clearly Never Forget You would still be in the running.

Hello~ I'm home, I have a big ass fajita, and now I'm going to eliminate another song . . .

Everything I do is for you
And you are every part of me
And I don't want to face another day alone
Without your love

"All I've Ever Wanted" is the tenth and final track from "Music Box" - unless you live in Europe or Japan, or are lucky enough to own an imported copy with "Everything Fades Away" tacked onto the end, I guess ddd - and was composed, arranged, and produced by Mariah and Walter Afanasieff, with its lyrics written solely by Mariah.

Man, that middle 8 is a moment, isn't it? Her voice sounds so full and resonant. I love it. God, I really wish she had performed this live at least once on the Music Box or Daydream tours when she was at her vocal peak... I've got chills just thinking about how the middle 8 would sound live ddd. I'm listening to this again as I put this post together and I really should have knocked my score up at least a full point. Oh, well!

@tylerc904 (10) — "That final chorus hits me every damn time. What a closer (unless you are like me and have the Japanese edition)."

@Music Is Life (9) — "A perfect closer to this more laid-back, ballad heavy album. Gorgeous, great production, perfect vocals, and cute lyrics. Great song."

@pop3blow2 (9) — "Is the 'i'd be in heaven' a little prequel to her next big album single? (Well, Christmas aside.) I always liked this song, it has a strong melody. The sequencing on the back half of the album is a bit weird to me. Not sure I'd ended this the record with this."

@londonrain (9) — "'ALOOOOOONE WITHOOOOUT YOOOUR LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE... 'CAUSE AAAALLL' *fireworks go off*"

@Jimmyandroid (8) — "As a teenager I loved this one. I think the overblown everything (vocals, sentiment, lyrics) spoke to hormonally charged me."

@abael (7) — "A musical epic that sort of misses the mark. Similar to The Wind."

@godspeed (7) — "Alright, now that's one of the ballads I like on Music Box. It's nothing really memorable but it's Mariah in all of her 90s pop diva glory. Vocally speaking, this track is really gorgeous, I love how she sings the first chorus in a quite subtle way and then belts out the second one. Nothing groundbreaking but it does the trick. Production-wise, 'All I've Ever Wanted' is a typical Walter Afanaseiff composition. It's a bit Disney-ish but I really don't hate it. It goes well with the rest of the album and it's a nice way to close Music Box."

@Seventeen Days (7) — "It wouldn't be a Mariah album if we didn't toss in one more ballad, I suppose. The lyrics are sweet, though."

@bonnieetclyde (6.5) — "Mariah-by-numbers... or Mariah on auto-pilot."

@DominoDancing (6.5) — "Fine I guess, but outside of her performance this is a kinda unimpressive song to end this album on."

@WhatKindOfKylie? (5) — "Hmm. It's ok. Just I think it tries a bit too hard and not as a natural ballad in her long discography too. Thank goodness for the superb Everything Fades Away, being the last song on my edition! A much, much better way to close the album."

@Veeis (5) — "Snooze."

@BreatheBox (3) — "she really has better ballads..."

"And You Don't Remember" is the second track from "Emotions", and, just like every other original song we've lost so far, it was composed, arranged, and produced by Mariah together with Walter Afanasieff, and its gorgeous, heartbreaking lyrics were - you guessed it! - written solely by Mariah. Her mind. Her talent.

Apparently, it was meant to be released as the 4th single from "Emotions", but the runaway success of "I'll Be There" and the "MTV Unplugged" EP made the label scrap those plans, and footage from its music video shoot was instead used in a Japanese commercial for Sony's MiniDisc players. This really is a rather lovely song, but I can see why the single release was scrapped; this sounds like a perfectly fine album cut, but it's not a chart-topper tbh.

@WhatKindOfKylie? (10) — "An utterly beautiful ballad and very single worthy too. And if they hadn't had Can't Let Go on there, I think this just may have been the choice of Emotions ballad single."

@Music Is Life (9.5) — "Seriously slowing down the tempo after Emotions, this is the first ballad of the album, and it's pretty great. The lyrics are relatable, and the production is gorgeous."

@Jimmyandroid (9) — "Underrated gem."

@londonrain (9) — "Is this very 1991? Yes. Do I love it anyway? Yes."

@pop3blow2 (8.3) — "Takes a bit to get going, but turns out ok."

@Seventeen Days (6.5) — "A veer into generic ballad territory. Not super into it, but I've heard worse."

@bonnieetclyde (6) — "I really don't remember..."

@The Hot Rock (6) — "A bit of a topical song title since I ran through this (and the rest of the tracks in the rate) three times and barely remembered it each time. Sorry."

@abael (6) — "Ballad by the numbers. Pretty empty chorus."

@godspeed (6) — "I personally think the songwriting here is really enjoyable and arguably the best thing about this song, which feels a bit Mariah Carey/Walter Afanasieff by the numbers."

@DominoDancing (6) — "Ironically, I don't find this very memorable. Carried by Mariah's voice alone."

@Veeis (6) — "A bit dull but overall a nice ballad."

@japanbonustrack (5.5) — "That whistle was beautiful."

@BreatheBox (5) — "was gonna be a 4 but it gave us this"

@Imagineitwasus (4) — "This one feels empty, and its slot in the album is weird."

I'll be out of town with limited internet access this weekend, so I won't have a chance to post three eliminations per day. I'm really sorry! I do, however, have two drafts already (mostly) finished, so I'll try to get those out at the very least.

next week will be better for me schedule-wise, so I should be good with keeping to three-a-day posts - at a reasonable time ddd - for the rest of the rate. ty!

Those two eliminated tracks are the definition of "present on the album and they're doing nothing to me, I don't hate it but I don't love it" so I am really fine with them being out. As @abael said, I'm also a bit surprised that extras section is still here.

'All I've Ever Wanted' is an awful song. It's Mariah Carey by-numbers and is a crap way to finish Music Box. Thankfully the incredible 'Everything Fades Away' is a bonus track.

'And You Don't Remember' has grown on me over the years, but I'm not shocked it's out.

He / Him / His
'So Blessed' got a 6 and 'Never Forget You' a 5.5 but I concur that, having just heard the Radio Mix, it's a nice transitional moment of whatever and I'd have probably bumped it to a 6 too. I think I'd had it by the time I got to the end of Music Box - dddd - but it 'All I've Ever Wanted' also still got a 6.

'To Be Around You' and 'Till the End of Time' can also vacate now.
