The Mariah Carey Discography Rate Pt.1 • FINISHED

Back when I hosted the Mariah rates, @push the button left some commentary on 'Till The End Of Time' that has stayed with me ever since, and I hope he doesn't mind if I post it here -

This song is very, very special to me. It takes me back to a part of my life that was very fraught and also expresses every feeling I had for the boy I loved for five long years at school…. but could never say. It was our song, he just never knew it. Part of me still loves him now and he’s the one every other man has had to measure up against in some way. The dramatic 16 year old me had this on loop the day I left school in endless floods of tears. Nothing like that first love right? Last year I was at a villa in Montenegro chilling out around the pool looking up at the clearest night sky I think I’d ever seen. On my own with a glass of wine, Ipod on shuffle, just breathing the moment in. My phone buzzed annoyingly. I looked down and It was a text from an old friend. It said Marc, (the boy), had just died of cancer. All these years later and I sobbed my sixteen / thirty six year old heart out. A few minutes later, like something out of a movie, 'Til The End Of Time' came on shuffle. I went cold as stone and was a mess. The strange thing is whenever I listen to the album The Wind comes on directly afterwards as they are segued. Two songs side by side at the back end of an album tell both the beginning and end of a story. There’s just twenty years between.

It feels weird to complain about any exits when 1) we're dealing with the excellent material that we have here and 2) we're already at a 7+ average, but... I can't believe I just lost three 9s in one fell swoop like that.

And not only that, are people really trying to come for Babydoll of all songs at this point in time? Losing anything off of Daydream and Butterfly this early in the game feels really misguided. Seeing so many ballads dumped so early on probably should've been expected, but I seriously don't understand how the likes of I Am Free and When I Saw You are already gone when something like I've Been Thinking About You is still in the running. Hmm.

Score: 7.084

Good riddance. This was my second-lowest score for a reason.

Don't you know, I don't need no apologies, no
I'm not looking for no sympathy, oh
All I'm asking for is for your honesty
Won't you give it to me, give it to me now

"If It's Over"

Score: 7.105

Really, y'all? We're gonna get rid of a class track like this when all those sub-par remixes are... right there?

@vague you're doing a great job so far, so don't fret if the eliminations take some time.

The world is celebrating
And everyone's so happy

"Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)" is the second of the three original tracks from "Merry Christmas" to be eliminated. It was released as the album's third and final single (in a slightly remixed form) in late 1994, following "All I Want For Christmas Is You" and "Joy To The World". "Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)" was written, composed, arranged, and produced by Mariah and Walter Afanasieff.

I'm honestly not a big Christmas person in general, and I'm even less here for Christmas music, but I adore this for some strange reason. Maybe it's because deep down I'm just a big ol' sad-sack dddd, but "Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)" really resonates with me so much. I just find this to be one of her most touching and emotional ballads... I mean, who hasn't felt this way around the holidays? Idk, I just really love this.

@WhatKindOfKylie? (10) — "I wish this as well known and loved by the general public All I Want For Christmas Is You! I know alas it never will be, but it really and truly ought to be. This song captures the sadness just so effortlessly of wishing to be with and yet not being able to be with the person we love most at Christmas time for all sorts of reasons. We've all been there and know what that feels like after all sadly."

@londonrain (10) — "The ACTUAL highlight of the Merry Christmas album."

@Music Is Life (9.5) — "What a great song. I kinda love this too? The production is gorgeous, and the lyrics are great and really sad. Yeah this is great. (Also JoJo did a cover of this and it's amazing.)"

@P'NutButter (9.5) — "the slightly remixed version is so good and so underrated."

@Imagineitwasus (9) — "I love how she just gets inspired by Christmas, it's a gorgeous longing track."

@mokitsu (9) — "Beautiful is the only way to describe it. I think if she gave this some air-time with a TV performance, the GP would latch on to this one too. I love how this video shares a shoot with AIWFCIY, and yet managed to fit the song's deep sadness perfectly."

@Oceandrive (9) — "*cries in mulled wine*"

@bonnieetclyde (8.5) — "so simple but she engages you with those gorgeous vocals. Love the musically arrangement too. Very emotional."

@Veeis (8.5) — "It's so thrilling, it should get more recognition from the general public."

@Seventeen Days (8.25) — "Christmas is already a depressing enough time of the year, without adding to the sadness by making a Christmas-themed ballad. Thankfully, Mariah skips straight over any potential schmaltz and goes right for the heart. This is gorgeous, and the lyrics are very relatable for anyone who has lost a loved one."

@godspeed (8) — "I don't like Christmas music but somehow this song is more than just that, it has something that I really love and I find quite beautiful and moving. Yes, it's festive here and there but it's much more of a pop ballad than a Christmas Carol. The fact that Mariah achieves to deliver poignant songwriting with a holiday song just shows what a great songwriter she is. 'Miss You Most' is, to me, the type of song that should be a Christmas classic."

@DominoDancing (7.5) — "Pretty in a 'nice background music on a snowy winter day' way."

@abael (6) — "This is more standard fare holiday tune compared to the big event. Mariah sounds good, so there's that."

@japanbonustrack (5) — "Nice background music for Christmas time."

@If You Go (5) — "This is the weak point on the Merry Christmas album for me, the rest of the album is so festive, and then this comes and drags everything down and commits the cardinal sin of Christmas music and mentions other seasons! As far as Mariah ballads go it's pretty good though."

@Ana Raquel (1) — "I'm not a fan of Christmas songs in general, and this is even worse than most of them."
