@WhatKindOfKylie? (10) — "Such an ambitious finale - and only on her 2nd album too! This really is such a unique song in her long discography, and one that I believe was one that is a true snapshot of the time. I couldn't see a repeat of this in 2019, despite her many great moments in recent years."
@Sprockrooster (10) — "This is just magnificent production and Mariah excels in her vocals. When her vocals are no storming frenzy, but a calm refreshing breeze is a true moment of hearing Goddess."
@Pinky25 (10) — "It's chilling and haunting. I love the laid back jazz qualities."
@RUNAWAY (10) — "this is such an oddity in her discography.....a literal JAZZ song as the closer to her second album. And the fact that she never had another song like it that I can remember. It really stands out for being unique to her discography, and I really wish she explored jazz more in her career, because this song is excellent."
@nikkysan (10) — "This really does not get enough praise by fans, hauntingly atmospheric and a chilling way to close out the album."
@Seventeen Days (10) — "Oh, my. The tasteful jazziness of this. I'm pretty sure I can hear God when I listen to this. Such a beautiful track."
@Music Is Life (9.5) — "Love the piano intro to this. This is quite the heart-breaker, about losing a loved one. Her restrained vocal performance throughout is something to be praised, and it matches the subtle production perfectly."
@Imagineitwasus (9) — "This self-produced jazzy thing is exquisite."
@ohaimanabu (9) — "I actually wish we had more songs like The Wind in Mariah's discography. There's really not a lot like it."
@ysev (9) — "Breathtaking!"
@BreatheBox (9) — "yas queen she better serve us an original jazz album soon."
@Oceandrive (9) — "I may have over scored this by a point but I have always had a soft spot for this song. It caps off a fairly drab rear end of the album and sounds completely unlike anything else on the record (or her discography for that matter) It is a testament to her musicality that she sounds so at home on what is essentially a Jazz song and it's a sound I wouldn't be her dabbling with again as long as it doesn't include Tony Bennett."
@pop3blow2 (8.9) — "A more low-key version of 'One Sweet Day'. I would buy a Mariah album of just jazz standards with minimal production in a heartbeat. I always liked her voice over this kind of production the couple of times we got it."
@DominoDancing (8.5) — "The jazzy arrangement is really refreshing after all the generic early 90s pop preceding it on the album."
@Jimmyandroid (8) — "I'd be here for her jazz album."
@godspeed (8) — "It came to my attention several times that people on this forum seem to really dislike this song and, as much as I can understand why, it kind of astounds me since it's the most peculiar and surprising track on
Emotions and for that reason alone I believe it deserves a lot of love. 'The Wind' is Mariah having her 'lounge singer moment' and it works: it fits the mood of the album, it's unexpected and it shows that from early on she was willing to try different things and experiment with her sound and her vocals. It's also lyrically one of the finest songs on
Emotions. Not the most memorable thing on the album, for sure, but such a nice little gem."
@If You Go (8) — "So atmospheric, I wouldn't mind if she did an entire album in this vein."
@mokitsu (8) — "I love the jazzy influence and lyrics. Definitely her lyrical peak up to this point."
@londonrain (7) — "Mariah nailing jazz in quite an unexpected album closer."
@bonnieetclyde (6.5) — "not sure this has much replay value. You'd play it as part of the whole album listening experience but unlikely to seek it out on its own. An odd choice to end the album."
@tylerc904 (6.5) — "I used to think this was a drag but it is really lovely. It's got a real smoky and jazzy vibe that no other Mariah song manages."
@abael (6) — "It creates an epic stage, but leaves it empty."
@Veeis (4) — "It's exactly like the wind itself, let it fly away from me."
