And to the wind go so many dreams
That you held inside
Now you're just a memory
Burning in my mind

"The Wind" is the tenth and final track from "Emotions", and is a reworking of jazz trumpeter Chet Baker's 1954 track from his album "Chet Baker & Strings". Its lyrics were written by Mariah, its music was written by Russ Freeman, and it was arranged+produced by Mariah and Walter Afanasieff.

I've gotta be honest, I've never been a particularly big fan of jazz, so this always left me a bit cold. Mariah sounds incredible as usual and the lyrics are, of course, brilliantly written, but I pretty much never listen to this unless I'm listening to "Emotions" in full (which doesn't happen all that regularly tbh).

@WhatKindOfKylie? (10) — "Such an ambitious finale - and only on her 2nd album too! This really is such a unique song in her long discography, and one that I believe was one that is a true snapshot of the time. I couldn't see a repeat of this in 2019, despite her many great moments in recent years."

@Sprockrooster (10) — "This is just magnificent production and Mariah excels in her vocals. When her vocals are no storming frenzy, but a calm refreshing breeze is a true moment of hearing Goddess."

@Pinky25 (10) — "It's chilling and haunting. I love the laid back jazz qualities."

@RUNAWAY (10) — "this is such an oddity in her discography.....a literal JAZZ song as the closer to her second album. And the fact that she never had another song like it that I can remember. It really stands out for being unique to her discography, and I really wish she explored jazz more in her career, because this song is excellent."

@nikkysan (10) — "This really does not get enough praise by fans, hauntingly atmospheric and a chilling way to close out the album."

@Seventeen Days (10) — "Oh, my. The tasteful jazziness of this. I'm pretty sure I can hear God when I listen to this. Such a beautiful track."

@Music Is Life (9.5) — "Love the piano intro to this. This is quite the heart-breaker, about losing a loved one. Her restrained vocal performance throughout is something to be praised, and it matches the subtle production perfectly."

@Imagineitwasus (9) — "This self-produced jazzy thing is exquisite."

@ohaimanabu (9) — "I actually wish we had more songs like The Wind in Mariah's discography. There's really not a lot like it."

@ysev (9) — "Breathtaking!"

@BreatheBox (9) — "yas queen she better serve us an original jazz album soon."

@Oceandrive (9) — "I may have over scored this by a point but I have always had a soft spot for this song. It caps off a fairly drab rear end of the album and sounds completely unlike anything else on the record (or her discography for that matter) It is a testament to her musicality that she sounds so at home on what is essentially a Jazz song and it's a sound I wouldn't be her dabbling with again as long as it doesn't include Tony Bennett."

@pop3blow2 (8.9) — "A more low-key version of 'One Sweet Day'. I would buy a Mariah album of just jazz standards with minimal production in a heartbeat. I always liked her voice over this kind of production the couple of times we got it."

@DominoDancing (8.5) — "The jazzy arrangement is really refreshing after all the generic early 90s pop preceding it on the album."

@Jimmyandroid (8) — "I'd be here for her jazz album."

@godspeed (8) — "It came to my attention several times that people on this forum seem to really dislike this song and, as much as I can understand why, it kind of astounds me since it's the most peculiar and surprising track on Emotions and for that reason alone I believe it deserves a lot of love. 'The Wind' is Mariah having her 'lounge singer moment' and it works: it fits the mood of the album, it's unexpected and it shows that from early on she was willing to try different things and experiment with her sound and her vocals. It's also lyrically one of the finest songs on Emotions. Not the most memorable thing on the album, for sure, but such a nice little gem."

@If You Go (8) — "So atmospheric, I wouldn't mind if she did an entire album in this vein."

@mokitsu (8) — "I love the jazzy influence and lyrics. Definitely her lyrical peak up to this point."

@londonrain (7) — "Mariah nailing jazz in quite an unexpected album closer."

@bonnieetclyde (6.5) — "not sure this has much replay value. You'd play it as part of the whole album listening experience but unlikely to seek it out on its own. An odd choice to end the album."

@tylerc904 (6.5) — "I used to think this was a drag but it is really lovely. It's got a real smoky and jazzy vibe that no other Mariah song manages."

@abael (6) — "It creates an epic stage, but leaves it empty."

@Veeis (4) — "It's exactly like the wind itself, let it fly away from me."

Wow, I was not aware of this! It makes me appreciate "The Wind" even more... I am so glad this rate is happening because I am finding out a lot of things about certain songs (alternate versions, what inspired the lyrics, how the song came about, etc.) and rediscover them at the same time. It's making me appreciate Mariah's work and artistry even more and I honestly didn't think it was possible!

Is it finally time to starting cutting the extras you all have been clamoring for?

Unfortunately, not quite yet . . .

You take me through
The loneliness and emptiness
And I feel all right
'Cause you're by my side

"Music Box" is the title track from Mariah's third studio album. Its lyrics were written solely by Mariah and it was composed, arranged, and produced by Mariah and Walter Afanasieff.

Perhaps the sweetest track in Mariah's whole discography. There's a really gentle, tender vibe to this whole track musically and lyrically that makes me feel like I'm floating and instantly relaxes me whenever I listen to it. I never thought we'd get to hear this live, so I was ecstatic when she performed a bit of it during the Caution World Tour earlier this year. It gives me just the teensiest bit of hope that she'll do a tour - or, more realistically, a one-off show - of rarities/deep cuts one day.

@The Hot Rock (10) — "Loved how lush this was."

@tylerc904 (10) — "I'm worried about this absolute gem being done dirty in the rate, but it truly is a gorgeous tune."

@nikkysan (10) — "Well this certainly was a great rediscovery for me. So dreamy and ambient."

@pop3blow2 (10) — "Just such a pretty song that a lesser artist would've reduced down to an interlude or something. Mariah fleshes it out into a borderline mood piece & centerpiece for the album. One of her best vocals on the album, to be sure. There's a lot going on in this song. Very textured."

@londonrain (10) — "One of the most underrated Mariah tracks, and I just KNOW it's going to be done wrong here. I love how restrained her delivery is here and the music box-like instrumentation fits so well. It's a bit of an outlier in her discography and I love it all the more for that. Also, when will the other pop girls use 'thee' in a track during their imperial phase?"

@Jimmyandroid (9.5) — "I love a low key Mariah ballad and the warmth of the vocals of this one get me every time."

@Womanizer (9.1) — "Such a beautiful song and one of her best deep cuts."

@Music Is Life (9) — "Another ballad, indicating they dominate this album, the title is pretty perfect for this song and album in general. It really does sound like a song from a music box, and it's gorgeous. Her vocals once again elevate this song."

@WhatKindOfKylie? (9) — "Almost like a lullaby, and Mariah's voice itself feels like a Music Box of lushness too. Perhaps the most ambitious song on this album, and certainly one of the most unique songs in her discography too."

@Veeis (8) — "Gorgeous title track, I love how calm and chilling it is."

@godspeed (7.5) — "I remember the first time I listened to Music Box (the album), this track is the one that really had an effect on me. I think, in a similar way as the stunning 'Can't Let Go,' Mariah and Walter Afanasieff really managed to create a mood and a very peaceful atmosphere on this song which helps it to stand out among the other ballads of the album."

@DominoDancing (7.5) — "Very very cute, but a bit aimless for a five minute song."

@Imagineitwasus (7) — "Like the nostalgic feeling."

@abael (7) — "A track which showcases Mariah's talent well, but is pretty bland as a song."

@If You Go (7) — "This is a very pretty song, but it's not interesting enough to warrant being nearly five minutes long! Definitely could have benefited from some trimming."

@Seventeen Days (7) — "This track sounds like it was made specifically for the first dance at a wedding. It's cute."

@bonnieetclyde (6.5) — "vocally strong but the song is forgettable for the most part."

@Oceandrive (6) — "She recently performed a random snippet of this at Royal Albert Hall when I saw her and it's bumped its way up from a 6 for that reason, however being the title track of her most boring album is always going to tarnish this song somewhat."

we'll lose one extra and one single.
