The Mariah Carey Discography Rate Pt.1 • FINISHED

I honestly didn’t expect ‘Now That I Know’ to crack the Top 40 but it’s still placed miserably low. I think the song is undeservedly forgotten - if it was a single it’d easily end up twenty places higher as a classic Mariah uptempo I imagine. It’s such a campy, sugar rush.

I’ll Be There is such a staple on tour. I’m always happy to hear it and she always seems to have such fun with it. It feels essential in the Mariah catalogue, yet a solid almost 8 out of 10 feels about right.

Her discography is so jam packed full of good songs, I guess it’s inevitable that a few mega hits are going to fall early.

Although a few of you have been calling for this song to go for quite a while now, it's gotten the most 10s of the rate so far . . .

"Hero" was released as the second single from Mariah's third studio album "Music Box" on October 19, 1993. Its lyrics were written solely by Mariah and it was composed, arranged, and produced by Mariah and Walter Afanasieff. Originally written in under two hours for Gloria Estefan to perform as the theme song to the 1992 movie Hero starring Dustin Hoffman and Geena Davis, Mariah ultimately kept the song for herself at the urging of her then-fiancé, Tommy Mottola. Once the decision was made to keep the song for her own album, Mariah rewrote the lyrics, raised the key of the song, changed the instrumentation, and added more runs and melisma to the vocal melody.

Mariah has rerecorded "Hero" twice since its release: in 2001 as a mash-up with the "Glitter" track "Never Too Far", released as a charity single in the aftermath of 9/11, and in 2008 to promote her compilation album "The Ballads". "Hero" has gone on to become one of Mariah's most commercially successful singles, peaking at #1 in the US; #2 in New Zealand and Norway; #3 in Canada; #5 in France and Ireland; #7 in Australia and the UK; and #10 in the Netherlands, and has sold over 3.23 million copies worldwide in total.

I used to hate this, but, somehow, over the years, I've grown to appreciate it a lot more. It's still nowhere near a fave, but I can at least appreciate its appeal more today than I did as a kid. The live version from the Daydream Tour is the ultimate version for me tbh; I actually really do like that version ddd.

@Music Is Life (10) — "This manages to stay away from being cheesy while still being inspirational, not to mention being a gorgeously produced ballad with great vocals."

@WhatKindOfKylie? (10) — "The ultimate signature song of Mariah Carey's record breaking career, and one that still packs a punch over 25 years on. Whilst I prefer Make It Happen with its similar empowering theme, there is no denying that Hero is an utter masterpiece and why it continues to bring hope and inspiration during good times and bad for so many people. Myself included."

@bonnieetclyde (10) — "seriously, who doesn't love/connect deeply to this song? Simply beautiful - lyrically, musically, vocally. No faults to be found."

@tylerc904 (10) — "A little played out these days but I cannot deny the mastery here."

@Sprockrooster (10) — "People do the absolute most when it comes to this track at times on this forum and I am kind of hoping us raters can recognize it sheer brilliance. I mean the belting power - ballad that is chill-inducing from the start with those opening chords and her divine vocals. A high 11-contender and definitely part of my holy trinity of Mariah tracks from this rate."

@Pinky25 (10) — "Stunning. I know it sounds silly but this song really does give me strength and courage. Almost my 11."

@pop3blow2 (10) — "Is this Mariah's version of 'Greatest Love Of All'? Yes. Do I love it more in all its over the top, borderline corny glory. Yes I do. The video was a moment for me. She got her first NBC primetime concert on Thanksgiving that year. The amount of excitement had for that was through the roof. She looked like a goddess signing this song."

@Slice of Life (10) — "One of first Mariah songs I heard so of course it's getting a 10. A karaoke staple for yours truly. xoxo"

@Blond (10) — "The lyrics might be a little trite and it might have been done to death on singing competitions, but it still comes across as sincere. It's probably Mariah's most memorable big ballad(?) and I'm sure its message still resonates with people all these years later. Remember the X Factor finalists version though? How did we collectively let that happen?"

@Seventeen Days (9.75) — "Anyone else out there old enough to remember when Mariah sang this during her primetime special on NBC? This song remains a moment, and is easily one of her most beautiful tracks."

@ohaimanabu (9) — "It's the quintessential feel good song. You've all had this song HIT you in the feels."

@abael (9) — "This would get a 10, but I've watched too many singing competitions to truly enjoy this song anymore."

@londonrain (9) — "Yes, it's hugely overdone, and Rihanna's cover made my ears bleed... but I struggle to give this anything less than a 10. It was the first Mariah song I ever heard on the radio and Music Box and Daydream were the first albums I ever bought, so I can't NOT give it a 10."

@Veeis (9) — "It can be schmaltzy but it's an undeniable classic. Everyone knows Hero and I enjoy how uplifting it is."

@The Hot Rock (8) — "Not gonna lie, I kinda rolled my eyes and thought this was gonna be a sappy ass mess but it's good."

@RUNAWAY (7.5) — "¯\_(ツ)_/¯ she's a cute girl, and you know I am a sucker for a ballad, but god this one is just so schmaltzy and A LOT. I've never understood why this became such a signature song for her."

@DominoDancing (7.5) — "Considering this is something of a signature song, it has always left me a bit cold."

@Oceandrive (7) — "Part of me wants to score this lower, however I will take the Mariah approach when she lets everyone know that she basically hates the song but it helped a few people through some things so we'll give it some fan service for that reason and that reason only."

@godspeed (6.5) — "Alright, alright... I know that this song is not really appreciated on this forum or even by Mariah herself, and for good reasons! I personally don't really care about it and rarely listen to it. It is Mariah on autopilot, as so many people pointed out when talking about Music Box, and it's not a very interesting song lyrically or musically speaking. But I'm not gonna go and pretend that when this song comes on the radio, I don't sing along and belt it out. It is a hit and an iconic song even though we are so tired of it."

@Jimmyandroid (6) — "I've never connected with this one. I feel like I always knew she didn't write it for herself."

@Imagineitwasus (6) — "A bit too consensual and straight-forward for my taste."

@mokitsu (5) — "The most overrated song in her discography, the verses and bridge are cute but the chorus doesn't do it for me. It's just not up to her standards which makes sense given that she didn't originally write it for herself."

@Tigerlily (4) — "Dated. Corny. Boring. I can't stand this. 4 because of VOCALS. I'm ready for the stones."

@Ana Raquel (4) — "I... never really liked it."

@BreatheBox (4) — "the studio version is absolutely BORING but it has a great song underneath it."

@nikkysan (3) — "The blandest, most beige song she's ever done."

"Sent From Up Above" is the ninth track from Mariah's self-titled debut album. Its lyrics and music were written by Mariah and Rhett Lawrence and it was arranged and produced solely by Rhett Lawrence. Rhett Lawrence also produced "Vision Of Love", "Alone In Love", and "You Need Me", all from Mariah's debut album.

Such an underrated gem. Based on your commentaries, a lot of y'all seen to think "Prisoner" was the lost single from the debut, but, for me, it's always been this one. It should've been released over the melodically dull "There's Got To Be A Way" at the very least. I love Mariah's growly ad-libs here - they're probably the best use of her growls on the debut for me. God, what a banger.

@WhatKindOfKylie? (10) — "Early 90's House bliss!!! From that 'hoo' vocal intro against its dreamy beats, this was a dance floor smash in the making! Shame it never got to happen, but when you have an album that is essentially a chocolate box of single choices, some would naturally have to miss out. Oh, and it's my most played from the debut too!"

@abael (10) — "I mean... an album track has me contemplating my 11. Mariah did that."

@Pinky25 (10) — "I seriously love this one!"

@Womanizer (9.5) — "Sorely underrated and very atmospheric."

@ysev (9) — "Such a breezy tune!"

@pop3blow2 (8.6) — "A sometimes forgotten about song from debut, that I actually think is a better future indicator of Mariah's sound in some ways. You can hear a lot seeds of future bops in this song."

@bonnieetclyde (8.5) — "this sounds like a single. Missed opportunity. It's much stronger than some of the other songs released."

@Music Is Life (8) — "The lyrics aren't as good as other songs, but they could definitely be worse, and they fit the tone of the song, which is really bright and fun."

@The Hot Rock (8) — "A minor ethereal classic."

@Imagineitwasus (8) — "Smooth Carey making her debut."

@DominoDancing (8) — "Quite lovely, sounds like a proto-version of some of her later pop-R'n'B cuts."

@godspeed (7.5) — "I love this one! The melody of the chorus is sweet and catchy, the ad-libs and harmonies sound great and I feel like this song could have easily found its place on albums that came later in Mariah's career. A really nice song overall and one of my favorites from the debut, even though I'll recognize that it's not the most memorable track from the album."

@Seventeen Days (7.5) — "The 70s vibes on the verses, yes I'll take those please. It works well with the more 90s production values in the chorus."

@mokitsu (6.5) — "I really think this song is great - if it wasn't for the high bar set by other songs on this album and in her discography it would be getting a much higher score. A nice, breezy bop."
