The Mariah Carey Discography Rate Pt.2 • #51 + TOP 50

After a decade of nonstop success throughout the '90s, the noughties started off rockily for Mariah. Her first album released after she left Sony Records, 2001's "Glitter" soundtrack, was a commercial and critical disappointment. Its follow-up, 2002's "Charmbracelet", also underperformed, and Mariah's "whispery vocals" showcased on the album were heavily criticized. Mariah proved her time as a chart-topping superstar was far from over, however, with the release of her tenth studio album, "The Emancipation Of Mimi", on April 12, 2005. "Mimi" was a blockbuster album, selling over 10 million copies worldwide and spawning seven hit singles, including two US #1s.

Despite the struggles in her personal life and the fluctuations in her popularity over the years, the quality of Mariah's music has never diminished. With her thirtieth anniversary approaching, it feels like the perfect time to celebrate the Elusive Chanteuse's immaculate discography once again. For part two, we'll be rating her at-the-time final album on Sony Records, 1999's "Rainbow", its two underperforming follow-up releases, and, finally, her huge commercial renaissance, 2005's "The Emancipation Of Mimi". You'll have six weeks (plus the possibility of an extension, if needed) to rate the 75 songs from this era of her discography.

01 Please give all 75 songs listed above a score between 0 and 10, with your ONE favorite song getting an 11. Decimal points are fine and help to break ties, so feel free to use them as needed.
02 Commentary is greatly encouraged - and very much appreciated - but it's not mandatory.
03 Mariah's discography is very ballad- and feature-heavy, so if ballads and/or rap aren't your thing, then this rate might not be for you.
04 For songs with multiple versions and/or remixes, feel free to rate whichever version you prefer. The only exceptions are the remixes in the extras section; you must rate the versions listed - although rating a radio edit, etc. instead of the full-length remix is fine.
05 Please use the PM list I've provided below, and send your ballots in that exact order. It makes things so much easier for me when inputting your scores into the spreadsheet!
06 PM your finished scores, alongside any commentary you've written, to me by
    Sunday, May 17th @ 11:59 pm EST
end of day on Tuesday, June 2nd!

BEST FICTION, Rem, Crisp X and 24 others like this.
  3. Let me highlight this!!! Yes not every ballad evokes emotion and not every feature improves the song. But I hope the people who participate can say that they enjoy at least 60%! Mariah deserves this.

Rem, Crisp X, Lapras and 14 others like this.
  4. Will absolutely be participating here after part one slayed me so much. Just listened to the first album to get started on preliminary ratings.

My planned/expected 11 potentially getting upended before I even really get into things? It's more likely than you think.

  5. I am here for this!

Not a single Christmas song in sight this time, I love to see it.

Music Is Life, Rem, Espeon and 6 others like this.
  6. I'll get started on this soon.

  7. Whew I'm ready for this one. I'm mostly unfamiliar with these albums so I'm excited to make discoveries.

  8. This part contains my absolute favourite Mariah song ('Petals') so of course I'll be here.

I hope Charmbracelet is treated better this time.

I have no problem admitting that this is my least favourite section of Mariah's discography, but I'm still super pumped for this. My 11 is also fairly easy to pick this time around, compared to the last rate where I felt like I was juggling ten different choices.

I really enjoyed the write-ups and graphics from the first part @vague and I can't wait for this to get started!

Music Is Life, Rem, Crisp X and 7 others like this.
  10. I really think that Glitter and Charmbraclet, contain some of her finest work.

RUNAWAY, berserkboi and vague like this.
  11. Like @RainOnFire , this is my least favourite section but there's still highlights to be found across the board and the first part was ran so flawlessly, I can't not take part.

  12. Can't wait to do this!

Arguably the most patchy section of her discography but The Emancipation of Mimi is in my top 3, Charmbracelet is a big favourite too.

Music Is Life, Rem, RUNAWAY and 4 others like this.
  13. Just here to give a word of support to the absolutely fantastic @vague bringing talent to every Rate! I won’t be participating since I am technically @ambivalenttoMariah but the good sis really did that in We Belong Together! The restraint shown in the song and then the final verse in that high register giving me all the feels - an 11,000/10!

Also The Art Of Letting Go for the win if hating We Belong Together is De Rigueur within Mimi fandom!

    WhatKindOfKylie? and vague like this.
  14. Echoing the sentiment that this is my least favourite Mariah “era” in terms of music, Rainbow and Charmbracelet aren’t without their gems but they’re probably her patchiest albums. Still absolutely taking part though! Petals, Bliss or the Through The Rain Remix are gunning for my 11 this time, unless I make a discovery.

    ysev and vague like this.
  15. I really do think that Rainbow, was actually quite a strong follow up to Butterfly. Any album to follow her magnum opus, was always going to struggle in comparison. But, Rainbow, is still a solid album in it's own right. Contains one of her most iconic singles of all time to start off with, not to mention this, one of her finest moments period:

  16. I actually love Rainbow.

  17. Me too-great album.

Music Is Life, vague and Maria like this.
