"One Mo' Gen"

Score: 8.214
High scores: 11x1 @Maria @10×5 @Dangerous Maknae @tylerc @GimmeWork @nikkysan @Slice of Life
Low scores: 6.5x1 @If You Go
Vague's score: 9
Londonrain's score: 8
My score: 10

As in “One More Again”, slang for one more time… it is a flawless mid-tempo bop imo. Also the only collab on Caution with producer Fred Ball, perhaps best known as the co-writer and producer of Rihanna’s classic “Love On The Brain.” The desire is palpable as Mariah sings about being infatuated over sexy time with her lover. The building fire, passion, and thirst of the lyrics in the verses works so well with the more explicit and playful chorus. “Did you like when I put lips there? Cause I like when you’re kissing me everywhere”…. I’m gonna need Mimi to crank the AC because it’s too hot in here. I love the little flourishes in the background so much. Some spoken. Some sang. Some in French. They just add such a fun touch to the sultry vibe of the track. Let's hear if you all felt the heat too?….

@Uno (9) — "While I admit I never purposely seek this song out, I am always pleasantly surprised how good it is when it comes on. That 'the temperature is rising, crack a window' bit is so good."

@londonrain (8) — "Queen of teaching slang to the world."

@Jimmyandroid (7) — "A solid 7, there's a lot to like about this but it's not a favourite."

No commentary from our 11 giver @Maria so I hope they chime in and tell us their thoughts on this amazing track.

I promise that I won't...

And so we say goodbye to the last surviving track from Merry Christmas II You. I’m not sure if it’s because it’s newer or not as over-played, but I must admit this is my favorite Mariah Christmas song even over All I Want For Christmas Is You. Both are 10s though. When it came out, I was instantly in love. She’d done it again. Managed to make another Christmas song that’s so catchy, has so much joy, and cheer, that it feels classic on arrival. The melodies in the verses, bridge..etc are all just festive perfection. The “Ho Hos” are infectious in the best possible way.

Oh Santa! just has so much more sass than most of her Christmas music. It’s got the warmth of the season but with a wink and an edge. Like the way it opens with the cheer squad-esque backing choir chant (repeated throughout). Such a fun, vibrant touch. A touch that also works well on The Distance (but more on that later). “I saw them shopping last week and his new girl was so leak” “So you can scoop him up and scoop him right down my chimney” – It’s all so playful. I just can’t find a single complaint about this song. Christmas isn’t even a holiday season I particularly enjoy but this song still always gets my feet moving and brings the joy of the season alive for me in a way I haven’t felt since childhood. The power of our Christmas Queen! Let’s hear from you festive bunch of lambs…

@Jimmyandroid (10) — "A throwback bop and lyrically genius. I use this much more that AIWFCIY."

@Uno (9) — "The edit with Ariana and Jennifer really elevates this, but it's still a huge bop for a Christmas song, which I normally hate."

@londonrain (8.5) — "A cute little Christmas bop."

@godspeed (8) — "I don't care for Christmas but this song deserves to become a modern holiday classic."

@Ramalama (7) — "It's pretty cute, but a bit too manic to be a really top tier Christmas classic."

A mixed bag of songs for me in terms of personal favourites of mine going out the last few eliminations. Glad that Oh Santa! did pretty well though, really is a festive bop and think needs more love and respect amongst the Joe public. Even Ariana Grande couldn't do anything for it in that respect. Oh well.

Oh Santa manages to live up to the task of being a worthy sequel to behemoth that is All I Want For Christmas Is You. I kind of resent Mariah's focus on Christmas but she really knows how to create a warm, cozy, nostalgic Christmas vibe and she deploys that ability in full force for Oh Santa while still keeping it effervescent and catchy. I wish it was more of a staple, frankly.

I'm thrilled to see this rate getting picked back up, thank you so much @GimmeWork and thanks as always @vague and @londonrain! I'm a diehard lamb but I admittedly haven't listened to Mariah in ages, so this will be a good opportunity to revisit some of this material.

That being said... I just lost 2 of my 10s (and I only gave out 7 in total!) so maybe reviving this was a mistake! Jokes aside, I thought Candy Bling was a universal fan-favourite so I was genuinely shocked to see it leave at #31, it's The Roof Pt. 2 for me and I consider it to be one of her best songs ever which I realize is saying a lot in a discography as vast as hers! And Faded is brilliant and would've made for a killer single, I just love that even though it's a Mike Will track, she naturally has her stamp all over it - I mean that final minute with all the layering of the different vocal bits? Only Mariah. I'm listening to it now again and it's so good.

"Angels Cry"

feat. Ne-Yo

Score: 8.226
High scores: 11x1 @Lost In Japan. 10×12 @WhatKindOfKylie? @tylerc @Uno @Aester @Andrew @Robsolete @Conan @Slice of Life @Holly Something @Oleander @londonrain @Music Is Life & Death
Low scores: 5x2 @Lapras @Oceandrive 5.5x1 @Mushroom
Vague's score: 8.25
Londonrain's score: 10
My score: 9

The fifth single from "Memiors", like much of the album a collab with The-Dream and “Tricky” Stewart and “Big Jim” Wright. The “remix” featuring Ne-Yo that was released was originally intended for a companion remix album called Angels Advocate that was eventually shelved as Mimi shifted her focus to the release of Merry Christmas II You. There’s so much to love about Angels Cry. A ballad with hope to salvage a fading relationship, certainly isn’t new territory for Mariah lyrically but she does this type of heartbreak so well that even the slightest variation still hits so hard. That’s how I feel about Angels. Is it her best work in this realm of heartbreak we have in this rate? No (but imo it comes close.. more on I Stay In Love later). Her higher vocal register soars in all the right places and the production is a fantastic support culminating in a *tearing-up, gestures to chest* “it just gets you right there” moment. It’s simply #beautiful (more on that later too). Let’s see if it makes you angels soggy as well…

@Uno (10) — "Phew, I'm glad I didn't give up on this album; what a hidden gem (not really because it was a single, but I had no idea) - this is the perfect amount of sappy and emotional without getting too cheesy like she often does throughout this album."

@londonrain (10) — "One of the mysteries of the UK charts for me is how the duet version charted when I've never been able to buy it anywhere."

@Jimmyandroid (9) — "When Memoirs came out this would have been a 10. In the intervening years it's lost a bit of its sheen and I don't go back to it quite as much but it's still great."

@godspeed (9) — "This low-key should have been a hit. This chorus is such a sing-along one. Also the 'prelude' is heavenly."

@Sprockrooster (7) — "I feel like this is a bit overrated on the forum. I do like it a lot and it works very well in the context of the album. But it doesn't hold a candle to the ballads we are used (read; spoiled) to from MIMI."

Is this a separate listing from the solo version? Or are they combined?

The remix very blatantly existed just because of the Angels Advocate concept and for no other reason. It’s the same reason the “remixes” of Up Out My Face, Betcha Gon’ Know and It’s A Wrap aren’t really properly new mixes but are just the same song with someone else’s vocals dropped in to replace Mariah’s for a section of the song (although It’s A Wrap gets away with it because that intro gives us actual interaction between Mimi and Mary).
