The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)

It's not off to an amazing start globally, in all honestly. The first few days have been well under a lot of MCU movies, including both Thor 4 and Dr Strange 2.

I thought this was going to do gangbusters right out of the gate. Stunning trailers, emotional impact, curiosity of how they handle T'Challa's death, introduction of Namor - it's got so much going for it.

It'll have a great domestic run I think. Be interesting to see where it stands globally on Sunday.

Except the world's economy going to shit?

Really enjoyed that! Great action, some really good visuals, excellent soundtrack, lots of mothering in the performances. I liked that it was standalone and didn’t link to countless other properties, and always good to have a legitimately threatening villain but not in an end-of-the-world way. And he’d get it too.

Michaela Coel was entirely wasted and I’m kinda a bit baffled what it was about the role that even compelled her to sign on? Or maybe it was just the chance to be in the film generally that appealed to her, which is fair! But yeah I expected way more and she was totally nothingy.

The scenes with Martin Freeman and his pal were the weak link for me. Felt like they were out of an entirely different movie. Or rather felt like they were from a Disney+ show. The pal was giving a performance totally different from anyone else in the film, and a lot of the humour really didn’t land.

But these are minor quibbles, so overall definitely a success!

I do agree about Martin Freeman and Julia Louis. I feel like you have to follow all of the movies/Disney+ to understand why she was even included. They were definitely the weak link.

I feel like with Michaela, she probably signed on due to hope for the future. I feel like she got enough of an introduction that I can see them expanding the role in the future whether it be a sequel film or Disney + series. Seeing how great this film was at opening up these supporting characters, I'm really excited for a Disney + Wakanda based series. It's overdue that they expand this world. This is golden.

One of the best MCU films since Shang Chi. It was a delight seeing all these actresses using their acting chops and shining brilliantly. What they did with Namor and MCU’d him was a stroke of genius! More Namor please! (Plus Okoye needs her own series or movie).

Despite all this, Disneys VFX was taking me out of the movie here and there. They really need to perfect their Stagecraft/ Volume technique.

I thought it was pretty much useless. My least favourite Marvel by some distance. I was so looking forward to it.
I haven't seen it yet, but am obviously well aware of the incredible praise it's getting.

Given that the two trailers alone were better than at least 5 MCU movies, I just can't compute that this movie could be the worst one ever?? I know all our tastes are different but this is wild.

What didn't work for you, to the point where it rendered the whole thing useless?

I know the first movie had a slightly stronger initial reception than on repeat viewings but this one I've seen pretty unanimous praise for all the big emotions and the central conflict.

Most the bad is largely just like, a slightly overstuffed story and the standard iffy effects at points.

I'm really glad it's landed where it counts

it was structural goo. All performances were indeed lovely but it was just such undisciplined storytelling. I’ll admit I have unusual taste for Marvel films - I loved Multiverse of Madness and Shang Chi which often get a hard time.
I have to say I’ve just read plenty of very negative reviews of Wakanda Forever since I got home so I’m not entirely isolated.
