The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)

It’s quite sad to think Captain Marvel was intended to be the face of the MCU post Thanos and now she’s not.

Was she thought? I’ve heard little things about her leading Avengers but it’s not like there’s been an obvious change in scheduling so that didn’t happen. Was this not Feige talking vaguely about possibilities? Sure if she’d been wildly popular they’d have worked her in somewhere maybe but as it stands she wouldn’t have appeared anywhere else yet surely?

She definitely was supposed to lead the Avengers, it was said quite a lot back then. It’s just that there’s been soooo many projects since that no one has been to face of the Avengers.

I always got the impression that Ironman, Cap and Thor would be replaced as a trio by Doctor Strange, Black Panther and Captain Marvel.

Nothing I’ve seen so far indicates that Carol won’t remain the godly mega powerful member of the trio but I wonder if Shang Chi will now fill the Black Panther shaped hole in the team or if we’ll see Anthony Mackie step up following his own Cap film.

I hope she'll be more prominent in Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars. She hasn't really felt part of the team yet or felt that crucial to any overarching plot.

If there will be a proper Avengers line-up, I think Shang Chi, Mackie's Cap and the new Black Panther are likely to be there.

Thor, Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch and Spider-Man could have a different kind of presence, but still be prominent/integral to the plot.

Not sure about Captain Marvel, Ant-Man and Wasp. We'll see.

Feige definitely said Carol would be the face of the Avengers moving forwards. With Iron Man being the face of the MCU initially, I took it as Carol taking over that role. But she seems kinda forgotten about.

You would think if she was going to be a massive player in the MCU, they would be really pushing her in things like merchandising but there’s hardly anything for her.

Feige Even said Carol was by far the strongest Avenger, and then recently went back on it says Wanda was, I feel like the angry fanboys are influencing this a bit. Hopefully her film’s performance won’t be the nail in the coffin for her fronting the team going forward.

Seeing her pop up at the end of Shang Chi as an integrated member did excite me.

I imagine Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, Thor and Shang-Chi are dead certs for the next Avengers lineup, Black Panther II, Captain America II and Ant-Man also likely?

Wasp seems to be getting cut out of her own film (for good reason if so) but would’ve put her in there also.

I don't know why but I have this feeling Antman and The Wasp are getting squished in Quantummania. Give Pfeiffer the mantle again!

And the daughter will also go in. Evangeline Lily can exit the premises.

It’s shame the Carol situation has been so reactionary, as her movie did so amazingly well. And they have not had the chance to build up her character further. From the way Brie talks, I also don’t she think she is expecting much.

Let me blame that awful wig from Endgame too.

Well when Kang decides to really threaten everything and all the characters feel the need to team up and form the Avengers again.... I can still see it being Carol. It's certainly not going to be Wanda, nor would I want it to be.

I think the next Avengers will be a big ensemble piece again, like Infinity War at least. But they’ll probably focus on 5/6 heroes as the centerpiece.

I’d predict Captain Marvel, Dr Strange, Captain America, Shang Chi, Thor and Black Panther.

These numbers are really surprising to be honest. I guess It does have Kang and the start of Phase Five going for it.

Yeah out of all the recent MCU films, it seems to be the most "relevant" in the overarching MCU story leading up to the next Avengers films, where as a lot of the recent MCU films have felt more like side stories that will probably be more relevant later, were not necessary to be seen right away in theaters.

We've talked about it before in this thread but I do think the MCU has a bit of an issue when it comes to keeping stories relevant. So many lose threads happen and it takes sometimes years for them to be continued or brought up again, just because of how many characters and stories they're working with at this point.

...and the fact that there's been NOTHING in cinemas for eight long weeks.

While this is true, they also seem to have a problem in just treading water. The "multiverse" concept has been slowly simmering through WandaVision, Loki, No Way Home, and Multiverse of Madness. Knowing this will all lead to Secret Wars, which takes place after (checks notes) THIRTEEN more projects...I can't help but think they're stretching things a bit thin.

I mean, with Wanda's character basically re-lived her WandaVision arc in Dr. Strange 2 (albeit a little more evil the second time), but...did we need that story? I expected her to be completely redeemed and repowered by the end of the movie, and instead she's back in the limbo where she started. It's getting frustrating.

Although I'm not interested in all blockbusters, it is reassuring to see Spider-Man, Dr. Strange, Top Gun, Wakanda Forever and Avatar making so much money. It shows people still like to go to the movies.

I can imagine 'Guardians vol. 3' slightly underperform, like 'Love & Thunder' did. There could be some fatigue for this kind of style/humour. But, basically, I just want 'The Marvels' to be great and successful. Aside from the Disney+ shows, there will be quite a gap (about 10 months) between 'The Marvels' and 'Captain America: New World Order'. Which is a good thing.
