The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)

The credits made it seem like this is it for the Fox cast. I could see Deadpool, Wolverine and X-23 reappear in Avengers 5 or 6. Other than that, it looked rather final. I guess we won't be getting true fan-service like Scarlet Witch vs Famke's Phoenix.
Yeah, very much that. The plot of this movie made quite an explicit reference to that by saying...
Fox Logan was the anchor for that universe, so with him being dead, that universe also dies. No more Fox universe.

Brilliance in what way? They've done the whole "going through multiple multiverses to find the right variant" thing many times before. It mostly acts as a vehicle for more references and nods rather than a clever way to develop the plot, which is an issue throughout a lot of the film.

It's like one post-credit scene after another pasted together, constantly trying to up the previous gag/call-back they just did 10 minutes ago. Cumulating to no actual pay-off other than "congrats for keeping up!"

It was hysterical, I bellied-laughed so many times. Generally funny, and of course millions of easter eggs for both X-movie fans AND comic fans...

...but it failed on two levels.

The first, which is less important, is that – despite referencing this itself – it is just one more in a line of MCU movies that "ties in" to the multiverse "story" (as it were) and yet does not advance that particular plot at all. It's just more of the same, but this time with Deadpool and Wolverine instead of Dr. Strange and Spider-Man and Wanda. One of these days they're gonna have to stop tap-dancing and actually get on with whatever is supposed to be happening in this Phase.

The second, and this bothered me much more is that the inciting incident that brings about the entire plot of the movie makes no sense. I don't see any reason that
Paradox would have saved Earth-10005 Wade at all beyond "you're going to be in Secret Wars,"
and I'm sorry but even in a meta-referencing franchise that's not good enough to hang an entire plot on.

Am I going to see it again tonight? Yes. Will I laugh again? Yes.

Was it great? Meh.

Well, for comic book fans it was brilliant. There were references and things shown in that sequence that Wolverine fans probably never expected they'd see in live action, especially after this long. It's ok to do some harmless fan service sometimes.

True, but I think Wade's relationship and interactions with Vanessa did give some heart and motivation to those movies. They had great chemistry and the smaller stakes in the first 2 movies have more 'weight' than any of the multiverse stuff has.

I mean, Wade asked Hunter B-15 if she could go and save some of the forgotten heroes who helped save them and restore them to their timelines - meaning Elektra, Blade, X-23 and Gambit. It means there’s a chance for them to be used in a Secret Wars maybe.

I am so here for them coming back. Especially Elektra. And I fucking screamed at Wesley's line "there's only ever been one Blade, and there only ever will be" followed by Deadpool's look to the camera. Given the troubled nature of the Blade movie, that was extremely pointed and I'm surprised Feige let that one go.

I thought it was good! Not perfect but good enough

Really appreciated the fact that the movie wasn’t a cgi slodge

Just to clarify, I meant other characters from the old Fox movies,
like Jean, Cyclops and Storm, to make an appearance in the MCU.

We already got a version of Stewart's Professor X. There's also Photon who's left in another universe with Binary and Grammar's Beast. Who knows if/when that gets a follow-up. It all feels so messy.

Watched this last night. Didn't like it much. Got hardly a single laugh out of me and found the plot very thin. But the FOX X-Men/superhero nostalgia made it worth the watch. They poured the nostalgia on thick at times which only benefitted the film overall. But outside of Hugh returning and a few cameos, I can't say I had a very good time if I'm being honest.

I do wonder how it’ll all go from now. I’m going to assume we will hear news soon after their panel. I thought the whole thing was just a nod/homage to the end of Seinfeld - which also made me cry as a kid when I first watched it.

It felt a little homophobic that Gambit, Blade and X-23 had their own big action moment while Elektra got scraps. Girl made fighting sandbags seem exciting… should have gotten more!

That was a question I had too...

What was the point of Grammer's Beast cameo, if those X-Men weren't in DEADPOOL 3? Does that mean we have to wait another several years to see them in SECRET WARS?

Just...mess.

I mean, there are rumors that...
Avengers vs X-Men will be the next Avengers movie.

To quote Scream 4

The person who wrote it just under thought it.

Anytime Gambit spoke it was dead silence in my IMAX showing, it didn’t land at all. I was giggling though. At it, not with it.

I was cackling at this part myself. It was supposed to be terrible, no? Kind of in like a "why are you here, what are you even saying?" kind of way.

My entire, packed theatre was losing it at the insanity of Channing Tatum as Gambit. It definitely landed. It was so stupid and it was a meta joke at how stupid that idea was (and thank god it never got made).

That’s nice it’s landing with some audiences at least!

I haven't shared my full review/take on the film. I quite enjoyed it - I thought it was better than the second (I barely remember anything from that one...)
I have to be honest, I'm not a big fan of them but this one felt fun - albeit a bit of a "non-event" in terms of having an effect on the MCU as a whole. I thought it was entertaining though. The cameos all felt fun and not as cheesy as I thought they'd be. It also felt like, while there were jokes made at the surviving Fox characters, they all were respected and not killed off by Deadpool, especially Elektra.

Elektra, X-23, Blade, Gambit were all such big reactions in the theatre and they brought a lot of humor and heart. I do wish Elektra got a little more to do, action wise as it seemed like Gambit and Blade all got big moments and she didn't. Felt homophobic.

My one gripe was... I wish they cast an older actress for Cassandra Nova. Not only to be comic accurate, but to make her "I can leave the void?" feel more earned - like she has been there, ruling forever. It carried less weight with Emma Corrin, who did a great job... just felt miscast a bit.

Can we please get a Hot Toys of Elektra, please?
