Pumpin’ Up The Party was written and produced by Jamie Houston for the first season soundtrack Hannah Montana.
Jamie has written songs for quite a few Disney soundtracks, so it’s no surprise he worked on the Hannah one. The song was first featured in the Hannah episode “She’s A Supersneak”, which actually has a more important song in it, so I’ll wait to give you too many details on it, but I will say it’s about Miley sneaking out to the movies with Lilly and Oliver. If you know the episode, please don’t talk too much about it below, I don’t wanna spoil the future write-up. Pumpin’ Up The Party is probably one of Hannah’s most recognizable songs. It went to #81 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was performed multiple times, most notably on the Best Of Both Worlds Concert in support of Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus (which the picture I chose is from.) This is honestly probably the most prolific song we’ve lost so far, in the context of Hannah’s and Miley’s discography anyway. And it’s because of its “classic Hannah” status that I was afraid this would do extremely well. This has always been one of my “least favorite” Hannah songs, even when I was a kid, and I always knew why too: That damn chorus. Sure it’s “fun” but it’s so repetitive and grating at times. I know it’s supposed to just be a fun party song, but the verses and the groovy production – especially with that electric guitar - are so fucking good honestly, and I wish they had included a chorus to match it. I mentioned she performed this on the tour, and I remember thinking when I watched the premiere of the concert movie on Disney Channel at a friend’s house cause I couldn’t watch it at home (this friend is no longer a friend BTW) and it got to this song, I remember being disappointed despite bopping with my sister and friend. I even remember thinking “She couldn’t have performed something else?” and I’m pretty sure I had wished for something like Who Said or If We Were A Movie (which I’m honestly still
so pissed she didn’t do that song at all.) All of this said, I now maintain that this actually goes off quite a bit live, and now really enjoy the performance. It’s times like this where I wish I could spread out my scores a little more, cause if this had gone too far, I would’ve hated myself. Thankfully, some of y’all came through with the low scores and prevented that from happening. This is absolutely the correct first cut from Hannah Montana, y’all are so good at this. Although it is the first of the optional songs to cross 90 total points. The only comment I could find from a critic is from
AllMusic, who said that the song is a “slight stumble…that ends up going nowhere” and I have to say I’m inclined to agree.
Now of course, it’s your turn to speak up. Although most of you didn't have much to say. We might have proven
@phily693's (10) point with this:
Such an underrated jam. Although this feels and sounds the least Hannah out of everything on the first album. Sorry dddd. And I think I get what you mean but I'm not sure. Finally we have quite a few people who know where I'm coming from.
@DJHazey (4) makes a comparison to one of the most loved decades of pop music:
Has a bit of 'late 80s party song' in its DNA, but whatever it style of music it sounds like, it ultimately fails for me. Agreed.
@M24 (6) has a perfect comment:
A bit repetitive for my liking. Not that I didn't bop to it as a kid (or bop to it guiltily every now and then), but there are better alternatives in Hannah's repertoire. Pretty much
exactly this. Thank you. Finally, lowest scorer
@savilizabeths (3) has
never been here for it:
As a kid I really didn’t like this song. Like at all. Perhaps those ill feelings have just stayed with my into adulthood. Something about the vocal mixing doesn’t vibe with me. The chorus is kinda just really annoying to me? The shouted vocals are…just no. I guess I’ll just never be a fan of this one. Yes! Exactly! It's the chorus!
The music video:
(Pajama party!)
The performance from The Best Of Both Worlds Concert:
(Like I said, it goes awf.)
And the version from the remix album:
(Holy shit this is actually pretty fucking great, and might even be...better?)
Finally, one my favorite Jamie Houston co-writes:
