What's Not To Like is another song written by Matthew Gerrard and Robbie Nevil, this time for Hannah Montana: The Movie, with production done by Gerrard. It's an EPIC guitar-led BOP that goes AWF about how great being famous is, listing all the things you get, and how much fun it is. It fits right in to theme of the movie of Miley losing her identity and getting caught up in the "Hannah" persona. Like with The Good Life (eliminated back at #82), it's understandable how this theme could grate on someone, but this song doesn it better, cause it has a better melody, and better production, hat's a bit more fun than that one. Now, I know it's technically just a song written for a movie based on a popular TV show. But the ideas this song presents are actually interesting to think about, because we are a whole lot of people who understand what being a pop star or celebrity can do to someone, possibly better than anyone besides the pop stars themselves. But the people we refer to as "the general public" probably think this is a lot what it must be like, especially based in the lyric I highlighted above - or at least, they used to. I feel like it's been chnging and people are starting to understand the shit these human beings go through, but there definitely had been a mindset once where people thought living the famous life was amazing. So it's easy to assume that "Hannah" is right - there's nothing not to like. But as I said, we all know that isn't true. There's plenty of elements that are horrible that go along with being famous: lack of privacy, pressure to stand out and fit in at the same time, pressure to make money and get hits, being surrounded by constant parties where shit goes down that no one wants to witness and be a part of but they do it anyway, cause that's the life - it's what they're supposed to do. Miley herself knows how bullshit this song, and probably did even when she was recording it - she had been through shit even then - and I feel like migt have been one of the issues she had with Hannah as a whole. She's since spoken about body image and identity issues, which are understanable and heartbreaking, and while I don't know her, and can't read her mind, I feel like part of it might have been the fact that she was promoting this image of a perfectly happy pop-star, who had a few mis-haps, but lived a great life, when she knew this wasn't how it always worked. She projected this image to kids who believed it, believed Hannah was real, because Miley was under the wig. I know, I was one of them. And I could absolutely understand why she'd eventually have a problem with that. Now, i know this got a little heavy for a write-up about a fun pop song - and that is all that it's supposed to be - but I finally have the chance to express these ideas I've had for a while, and I'm glad I can take that chance. I'm not trying to put a shadow over the song, or the show - it's amazing, iconic, and will always be a huge part of mu childhood - but I do think it's important we talk about this. All of that said, I'll get back to the song. I was not expecting to give this a 10. At all. It isn't a very prominent song in the movie - only used in the end credits - and it seemed kinda basic when I first heard it. But as I was preparing for this rate, and constantly playing her music, with each listen I liked this a little more. It's just so much fun. It's a perfect sugary pop-rock song and I can never get it out of my head. The production is so well done - thanks to Matthew, who at this point is Disney Channel icon to be honest - and it's so uplifting. It always puts a smile in my face. Then there's that fucking chorus. How amazing is it that add a new line to it everytime it plays? Like, i fucking love it. It's one of the things a pop song can do that will always mke me pay attention. It's just perfect songwriting. Oh and the way the middle-8 builds with her quiet speak-singing ending with the shouted "TV star and movie roooolesssss!" and adlibbing a little before launvhing into the final chorus. Just fucking amazing. So at least when they decided to do shallow, they knew they had to do shallow well. Kudos to them for the hard work. Sadly, critics didn't seem to have much to say about this, so I'll turn to you guys.

Y'all were pretty quiet too, so let's start with @M24 (6) who uses that damn "f" word I can't stand: Real filler. There's a reason why I didn't remember this one from the movie. I pray for you and that filthy moth of yours. Oh and, that reason is because it was only used in the credits, which you probably didn't bother watching. Moving on to @savilizabeths (7) who gave in just a little: Something about the chorus is a little grating but it’s also pretty fun, so do with that what you will. Well, to each their own, but I think the chorus is great, but at least you know it's fun. @iheartpoptarts (10) wants to give Miley credit where it isn't due: At first I thought she said “90,000 streams” and I was like, wow, how ahead of its time. I can’t hear. That'd be amazing and iconic but sadly we both know that isn't the case. Thankfully, this song is way over 90,000 streams, having 1,517,170. Finally, we'll close with @DJHazey (10) who displays taste for once, in also unexpectedly giving this a 10: Okay this might even be better, in fact it is! Should've actually listened to this soundtrack a long time ago. That's on me. "Who could bla-ame you" -- I love stuff like this. I mean really what's not to like about a chorus that just grabs ahold of your soul and doesn't let go? Actually, yes to all of this! Can't believe you didn't play it sooner, and thanks for highlighting her vocal tics - she's honestly so underrated when it comes to her being able to sing as a performer, not just as a singer.

Have some fun with this song again:

And here's another Matthew Gerrard and Robbie Nevil co-write that I personaly love:

I’m surprised that song was so high up during the initial votes. Glad to see it slid down to the lower end where it belongs.
Mmmmmhmmm. It should've been at least top 60. So this like is only my duty and nothing to do with agreement.

Anyway....

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is a cover of Cyndi Lauper's iconic debut single, written by Robert Hazard. The production for the cover was done by Matthew Wilder, transforming the song from a synthy, new-wave bop into an upbeat, foot-tapping pop-rocker. Now, I haven't gotten into Cyndi's music yet - her version is the only song I know by her - but I do know this was her breakout (see what I did there?) hit, being released on September 6, 1983 and eventually peaking at number 2 on March 10, 1984. That's what we call longevity girls. According to Wikipedia, Miley was inspired to cover the song after meeting Cyndi at the 50th Grammy Awards and talking about music, Cyndi said, "Well, don't be scared of anything. People waste their lives being scared. Lasso the moon. But don't do it because someone tells you it's the right idea." This clearly had an impact on Miley, not just for Breakout but for her whole music career. One thing you can definitely call Miley's decisions the past decade is fearless, and at least mostly her own. I've always liked the cover, because of the fact that decided to change it. They made it faster, and gave it a sound that's more in line with the rest of the album. Then there's the fact that the sing just fits Miley so well. This song has definitely been an idea template for her career. She's had a lot of fun in the past 13 or so years and she's going to keep having fun, I hope. Critics had quite a bit to say about this, with AllMusic calling it "oddly rushed", Billboard saying the rocked out version "makes you okay with the fact that a generation will grow up thinking it's a Cyrus original", Boston calling the song a mood shift, the LA Times use the song to analyze the album and Miley's life, the NY Times calling it "overblown", PopMatters saying the cover is "worth a spin", and Slant Magazine saying it's "not-completely-disastrous". They seemed kinda divided apparently.

Y'all were pretty divided on this too. Just look at all those 9s. The most of any song so far. And it's the first song to cross 125 points. But it didn't stop people from going low too. Lowest scorer @iheartpoptarts (1) must really hate this: A 0 candidate, I'll admit. Why though? @DJHazey (4.5) agrees with AllMusic: I used to think "wow, this is a fun take on a classic!" and eventually it became a bit twee and I'm just thinking I'd rather listen to Cyndi. I know the original is a bop and the song is supposed to be fun, but something sounds, I don't know, 'rushed' about this version. I think it works but hey, we all have opinions. The rest of you at least liked the song. @Entropy (7) is simple: A reasonably fun cover. Nothing more, nothing less. Okay. So is @AbCF15 (7): It's a cute rendition of the song. Fair enough. @M24 (8) likes the sound switch: I actually think her cover is pretty good! Has more of a rock vibe to it. Obviously won't ever come close to the original, but still good. I think they're about equal, but it's me so...*shrugs shoulders*. I'm probably alone in this opinion though. Cyndi stan @pop3blow2 (8.3) likes this: Look, Cyndi Lauper is one of my favorite pop singers of all time. Miley’s version was actually surprisingly good the first time I heard it. I didn't expect much. She does something different with it, though, & while it’s a bit messy (as a production) she keeps the spirit of the original while injecting some new ideas. Good points, but I'm just curious why you think it's messy production wise. @Ana Raquel (9) enjoys this, but prefers the classic: Not a 10 just because it’s not as good as the original. If you say so. @savilizabeths (9) wasn't ready to have her wig tugged: It’s been a long time since I listened to this and I was completely prepared to come back and hate it. As a kid I had never heard the original and high key bopped to this one. However, I started listening and the production immediately blew me away! It’s so well put together. And Miley actually sells the hell out of this. I definitely prefer this cover to that really oddly depressing male sung arrangement that I hear all the time. Impressed. I'll make sure to avoid posting any of those. Finally, @Sprockrooster (9) sums it all up: So much fun. Very true.

Here's the song again:

The classic original:

Catching up with the rate after a tough weekend. Sorry for the shade towards "Wherever I Go".. I know not every bonus track is bad (Britney's "Circus" are some of my favs), but in this case I felt it was justified.

I'm not sure anyone noticed apart from our host, but I didn't vote for that Best of Both Worlds version because I couldn't find much of a difference tbh. Should've done the same with the See You Again remix, which I underscored because I prefer the original. Nothing to be done now, I suppose.

"What's Not to Like" is fillerish to me, I won't back down lol. I could've been a bit harsh with a 6, but it's not up to par with a few other songs from the soundtrack (I even preferred "The Good Life" to it). And yes, I'm very crass, I use the f- word a lot in my inconsequential comments :P You all are going to have to deal with it!

Re. "GJWHF", glad I wasn't the only one who heard Miley's version before the original! I was an uncultured kid and literally had no knowledge of pop culture or music apart from Disney shows and movies. I think it could've stayed longer (esp. considering it's so much better than the "Every Rose.." cover) but it was the next correct elimination on Breakout after "Wake Up America" and the bonus tracks (wait, is the other bonus track w/o Miley's brother still on? That should've gone already).

Buddy, you don't have to apologize! It's all in good fun! Also, TASTE. Circus bonus tracks are fire.

See that's when you just give both songs the same score.

I can't remember which one I heard first. I think it was Cyndi's but not 100% sure. "Every Rose" is great, and yes, Someday is still here. Also, it hasn't been a problem here (and there are no moderators anyway) but be careful, cause we're not supposed to use abbreviations and acronyms for songs and albums.

Clear, hopefully!
If only. I wish I could say yes.

As I Am was written by Shelly Peiken, Xandy Barry and Miley for her debut album, Meet Miley Cyrus. Shelly has a very extensive list of credits, having worked with many PJ icons including Christina Aguilera, The Veronicas, Mandy Moore, Ashley Tisdale and Michelle Branch. Xandy Barry is one half of WAX LTD, the other being Wally gagel. They produced the song. The song is slightly upbeat but also mid-tempo pop-rocker abiut how her boyfriend (probably Nick Jonas by the way) knows who Miley is and takes her flaws and all. it's very simple sentiment, one used in countless pop songs, but it never gets old for me. Especially when it's presented in such a catchy manor with a sublime vocl performance from young Miley. It's a great song, but not one of the best on it's album, so I'm not too mad at it going now, but I would have preferred Clear first. I don't really have much else to sa about the song. I like it, i really enjoy it, it's well-produced, catchy, and well-written, thanks to talent here, but I don't have a lot of memories attached to this one. it wasn't performed as part of The Best Of Both Worlds Tour, so I hadn't heard it until I first got the album, sometime in either 2014 or 2015. So that's all from me. The only critic that commented on it was PluggedIn which is this website with a bullshit religous agenda so I'm not going to give them any more attention, especially on this forum. So we'll just turn to you guys.

This didn't inspire a lot of thoughts and comments. @DJHazey (6) disagrees with me on Miley's vocal performance: Never thought much of this one ever. It's all centered on her 'airy' vocals and the way her voice trails off in weird ways throughout. Was wondering if years passing by would change my stance on the song, but I'm still left with the same impression. It's too much of a lifeless delivery stamped on a song that wants to do more. I'm left cold by it. I would definitely not use "airy" to describe her vocals but werk. @M24 (7) uses a different "f" word, but still compliments: Kind of forgettable to be honest. The lyrics are beautiful though. Yes they are. And it gets stuck in my head all the time, so I don't know about that. @iheartpoptarts (8) makes a very random reference: Giving me Smashing Pumpkins in the beginning, which is hilarious. We don’t even care. I don't think I've heard anything by them so I don't know about this. @pop3blow2 (8) gives a strong description: Charmingly vulnerable & rough around the edges. What a great way to describe this song, honestly. Finally, @savilizabeths (9) shares something personal: This one is a mood and one I definitely relate to. It definitely describes my relationship with my girlfriend very well. We both have mental health struggles and support and love each other through it all. I’m lucky to have found that kind of relationship. This song is such a cute representation of that. You already know how happy I am for you but I'm gonna say it again. Love you!

Listen to the song again and reflect:

Well it's official. Nothing is left untouched. The Extras are hanging on by the skin of their teeth, with only one song left. How long will that last? The last two Hannah albums are sadly struggling, with only about half their songs left each. All the Miley albums are still faring well, with each only having lost a couple songs at most. The classic Hannah albums are going strong as well, with 7 each, and the movie soundtrack has 4 for 4 with miley and Hannah songs. Plenty for it to hold on for a while. So what do y'all wanna see out in the next 10 eliminations? It's time for a warning as well; we will start losing 11s, starting with the next elimination at #70. You've been forewarned.

Good points, but I'm just curious why you think it's messy production wise.

I just find all the background instruments a bit busily produced/mixed. ‘Manic’ is the best word I think of at the moment. I do think it’s overall a creative take on a song she could’ve just phoned in, though.

Shame about ‘As I Am’. I think it deserved a bit better. I forgot Shelly wrote that one, but nice to get some extra Mandy mentioned here!

Ahhh okay. I get it. That actually might be why I like it so much.

I think almost everything deserved better and I wouldn't have been mad if As I Am stuck around a little longer. And I can promise, there will be more random Mandy mentions later on!

Wherever I Go has a cute story behind it, which seeing it while playing might have bumped my score. The Best of Both Worlds is one of those 'can't really tell a difference' situations for me, so you'll all see the same score when the other one comes along, so please eliminate it! What's Not to Like was one of my favorite new discoveries and was done very wrong here, especially when that terrible cover of a Cyndi Lauper classic comes right after on the elimination trail. @Music Is Life -- you have to know Time After Time and True Colors at the very least, and maybe All Through the Night. The first two will be in my 80s rate along with Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. I also chuckled at not knowing Smashing Pumpkins because I always remember how you said your parents got you into Kiss and your sister got you into alternative/metal bands and somehow that makes me think they would have made you hear a classic 90s alternative band like Smashing Pumpkins. As I Am is a great first elimination for Meet Miley Cyrus, Clear is still in and deservedly so!

I always assumed we weren't meant to take 'What's Not to Like' at face value - it's more like the upbeat fun part of the story before all the downsides of fame become apparent, the high before the lows.

Turn-of-the-century pop princess Mandy came out on top in the end? What justice.

I don't mind if nobody knows who the Smashing Pumpkins are, we're in a Disney pop rate, sounds perfect.

That's my fave Christina single too!

Wait! I do know Time After Time and True Colors, but don't think I know All Through The Night. I'm so excited for that rate. Well, my parents was more 70s and 80s rock and my sister was more 00s/10s so they kinda just missed out. I've heard of them, I just can't name any songs of there's. I agree with you about What's Not To Like. That's pretty much it.

Yup! It was down to that and In My Pocket, so naturally either winning would have been fine. At least, by me.

Sounds perfect to me too!
