Don’t Wanna Be Torn was written and produced by Kara DioGuardi and Mitch Allan for Hannah Montana 3, and it’s connected season. If you’re not aware of Kara (what kind of pop fan are you?) she’s had a career for over 20 years now writing songs including some A+ pop classics like Kylie’s Spinning Around, Hilary Duff’s Come Clean, half of Kelly’s Breakaway album, including Walk Away, Lindsey Lohan’s Over, Ashlee Simpson’s L.O.V.E., nearly all of Hilary’s Dignity album, quite a bit of Christina’s Back To Basics album, and SO MANY MORE. She’s honestly an icon at this point. She also released some music of her own, and was a judge on American Idol. Mitch Allan is no slouch himself, co-writing I’ll Always Remember You, which left a few places ago at #68, and a couple others for Hannah as well as plenty for other artists, including Fifth Harmony, Demi Lovato, Kelly Clarkson and Fall Out Boy. Don’t Wanna Be Torn is a pop-rock mid-tempo that’s lyrically about struggling with life/emotions/choices without the support of a specific loved one. In context of the Hannah world, the song is first featured in the episode “He Could Be The One.” Now, there’s an obvious song that this episode revolves around so I’m not going to give too much away, but it is a bit of a spoiler, so yeah.
The basic plot of the episode is Miley dating Jake but crushing on Jesse, and feeling like she has to choose between them. The song is played after Miley watches a video with her mom talking and giving some advice that it’s easy to listen to your heart and Miley’s standing on the porch thinking while a picture blows towards her of one of the guys. So it’s safe to assume that the song is a message to her mom, about how she misses her, and wishes she could be there to help with everything she’s going through.
Some pretty heavy stuff for a kid’s show, huh? It’s actually a pretty sad song, and extremely relatable for anyone getting older and struggling to make the right choices. I’ve always loved the song, and always want to sing along with it at the top of my longs. It’s catchy, and the production is a strange mixture of crunchy and polished that just works so well for me. I especially love the guitar work throughout the song, acoustic and electric. The acoustic just feels so melodic in the verses, and it feels like the electric is kind of there to harmonize with the acoustic. Do you know what I mean? Sorry if that doesn’t make any sense. I’m kinda low-key upset. Y’all did this one slightly wrong. But I’ve gotten used to that by now. Critics didn’t really comment on the song, so I guess it’s up to you guys.
Which is sad, cause y’all barely said anything too. The three of you who did at least liked it though. @DJHazey (7.5) prefers it to most of the other ballads on the soundtrack: Pretty enjoyable, certainly more-so than most of the other softer moments I've heard here. Well, at least you have a sliver of taste sometimes. @M24 (8.5) was pleasantly surprised: I didn't expect to enjoy so many Hannah ballads. But this one is pretty good too, particularly on the lyrical side. Yes, seriously the lyrics are SO GOOD. Finally, @savilizabeths (10) displays taste once again: I always loved this one. There’s not much to say besides it’s gorgeous and emotional. The production is really well done here too, as are the lyrics. It’s super solid. Yup yup yup.
Listen to it again people, for me:
Some Kara Classics:
A Mitch co-write I personally love:
Ooooh, I heard bells. Did someone mention Kara DioGuardi?
I'm not gonna say I'm her biggest stan on the forum, but I'm up there! (shameless plug for the Spotify playlist I made with over 100 songs written/co-written by her). I also have an appreciation thread for her somewhere on here, too. I just love her.
'Don't Wanna Be Torn' is a great little song. I like the double-tracked vocals towards the end.
Great mention of 'Miss Movin' On, too @Music Is Life. That's a fave of mine, by them.

Yeah, me too. I just had one too many PJ things going on at the time (mixed with 'real life' *boo*), so I just concentrated on the required songs. I was glad you divided them up, though... or I wasn't sure I would've been able to participate. I've enjoyed reading all your write-ups on them, regardless.

Someday leaving now is a hate crime, especially since there are more than a few songs on Breakout which much lowers scores and we've been both high scorers a few times lately actually @Music Is Life.
Hannah Montana 3 needs to not be touched again for a long time.
There should be a Kara DioGuardi rate in the future. I just went to her wiki page and I didn't know she lived in Maine (where she met and married her husband) #PopjusticeMainers
#LetClearBeGreat (I only gave it an 8.5 but it's fun to rile up the haters)

Make Some Noise was written and produced by Andy Dodd and Adam Watts for the second season of Hannah Montana as well as Hannah Montana 2. They worked on several other songs for Hannah, including Every Part Of Me, that other song y’all did wrong, kicking it out back at #76 and Wherever I Go, which left right after at #75, as well as for other artists. Now, I have a lot of history with, and feelings about this song, but before I get into that, let’s talk about its use in the show. It’s actually the first new song we hear in the second season, as the opener, “Me & Rico Down By The Schoolyard” starts with Hannah performing this in concert.
It then cuts to Miley in bed with Robby trying to wake her up for her first day of high school, using her own words against her, then threatening to get the ice bucket if she didn’t get up. She replies with “You wouldn’t” and Jackson comes in soaking wet saying “Oh yes he would.” We then head to the school, and Miley and Lilly stalking the halls, talking about the cute junior and senior boys, and the fact that “Yesterday we were girls. Today, we’re high school girls” ddddd. They sit down so Miley can search for concealer for Lilly’s zit. Lilly sees that Miley also brought Beary the Bear, her favorite stuffed animal, and questions why. Miley replies with “He wanted to see the school” and Lilly makes her put him back, but not before giving him a kiss. Lilly mentions she can’t think of a worst first day of high school then getting caught with your stuffed animal. Miley then gets a text, and replies that she can, as the text says “I know you’re secret” immediately thinking that someone knows she’s Hannah Montana. Miley of course freaks out a little, but Lilly tries to calm her down, saying it’s not like this person’s going to tell everyone t lunch, then Miley getting a text saying “I’m gonna tell everybody at lunch,” with an added MWAHAHAHAHA. They then try to figure out who it is and how they found out when Oliver comes in, and they immediately question him if he did it. He didn’t, and Miley gets another text that says “Wondering what you can do to stop me? I have an idea.” Lilly gets the idea to look for the person texting and they’re in a school, so that’s pretty much everybody. They head to class, and the teacher introduces a new student who skipped a few grades, so he’s younger. It ends up being Rico and he says to Miley “Hiya toots. Get my messages?” After class, the three of them take him into the hall and ask him how he found out. He says that she was careless, and he has a camera phone. When she asks what she can do to keep him silent, he says he wants her to be his girlfriend. Miley goes along with it, only until Lilly and Oliver can find his locker and get the phone and get rid of the picture. Rico puts Miley through some torture, while Lilly and Oliver find the locker, which ends up having a whole jungle in it somehow, as well as a monkey guarding the phone. Since we know that Wizards Of Waverly Place exists in the same universe, my theory is that Rico has some wizards in his family, even if he isn’t one himself. Anyway, there’s more torture for Miley, and Lilly and Oliver come running in with the phone right when she’s about to kiss Rico, so she shoves a chicken leg into his mouth. Oliver opens the phone and it sprays water in his face, and Rico pulls the real phone from his pocket. After Miley makes a big speech about how even if he sends that picture, no one will respect him for it, because he’s hurting someone else and that makes him pathetic. He dejectedly gives them the phone, and seems really nice and sweet, and Miley says he’s better that way. When she offers to kiss his check, she puts him on the table so he’s her height and can present his check, but at the last second turns his head to kiss her lips. She then proceeds to chase him around the cafeteria when Oliver shows Lilly what Rico thought was Miley’s big secret, being a picture of her kissing Beary the Bear, making it all for nothing.
Whew, that was a lot. Now, onto the song!
An empowering pop-rock mid-tempo about how you should stand up and shout and be proud of who are and what you can do, this song has always been one of my favorites. I was a very shy and quiet kid, especially in school – at least in elementary school, cause I was bullied and pretty much friendless. But my thoughts were always loud. I was always thinking, and dying to say something whenever it ran through my mind, to anyone who would listen. The problem is that I never felt like I could. I never thought I would be strong enough to make some noise, and felt like I’d just get laughed at and criticized for it. I think this is a great example of what I mean in the “favorite lyric” section. While hate, bullies and just criticism in general from others can hold us back, we have deal the worst of it to ourselves. Humans, as a species, tend to stop themselves before even trying, just because they don’t they’ll have an impact or succeed. One of the hardest things to do is to learn how to break that. This song always inspired me to do something, to take action, if only for a fleeting moment, and even if it only ever happened in my head, my imagination. The song gave me a voice, when I didn’t have one, even if I didn’t actually use it. And I will forever love it for that. The song recently took on another meaning for me, when on September 23rd – Bi Visibility Day – I was reading articles about bi-erasure. If you didn’t know I identify as bisexual, and this is something that effects a lot of us. People will say we don’t exist, or we need to choose a side, or we’re just experimenting, or they’ll go a different way like saying we’re sluts, we’re untrustworthy, we can’t be monogamous because we can’t have just one partner and a whole bunch of other bullshit, from both straight people and members of the LGBTQ+ community. I originally thought this had never affected me that much, but I realized I was wrong: from the moment I came out to certain people I was dealing with it. A little bit after I told my sister, we were discussing it for some reason, and she said she thought it was just a phase, that I didn’t really like guys – which is hilarious in a non-funny way, cause this is the same girl who for years growing up would tease me about my probable gayness, and is actually bisexual herself so she should’ve known better. She’s since apologized for this, after I mentioned that it happened because she blocked it from her mind. But my friends too: after coming out to them in freshman year, they full accepted it, didn’t bother them, etc. but they soon just decided to use “gay” for me just cause it was easier, and I seemed to lean more towards guys. And I let it happen! Because it didn’t bother me at the time. In reality, I should’ve been pissed, and corrected them every time. It happened throughout all of high school, and new friends I made in college ended up doing it too, and it wasn’t until recently that I started saying, “No, I’m bi”. I like to make that clear, up front, no matter what. I will sometimes use gay as an umbrella term, but only around people who know me well, or on here, where everyone pretty much gets it. And I would use it in high school, because I did lean more towards guys – which by the way confused the fuck out of me. Like, I would go months without noticing girls, and start thinking like “Hey, maybe I am gay” then boom, I’d see some random attractive female and just focus on the opposite sex for a while. I struggled with this for years, until I did some research and realized just how fluid sexuality is, and how it can fluctuate, even from day to day. Which is why I firmly hold to the bisexual label. Anyway, I’m going off about this topic because I had actually listened to this song soon after reading those articles last September, and realized bisexuals as a community, still need to stand up, shout out, and make noise to be seen and heard and accepted in this world, even by our own whole community. Which is why I’m so disappointed in Miley’s joke from last year about how Bi/pan/lesbian women don’t need to be gay, they just need to find good dick. She of all people should’ve known the damage that can cause people in her own community. We as a whole struggle with being erased, but females get the worst of it. At the time, I tried to brush it off, but that was a stupid mistake just to support my fave. Now, I can’t help but this woman, but that’s one of the worst things she’s ever said, joke or not, and her apology won’t change that. I need for her to do better this year and in the future. Okay, wow. I was not expecting to say that much and write all of that, but I guess I had a lot to get off my chest, and this song was the outlet I needed. Thank you all for coming to my Ted Talk xoxo. I know it was a lot for this random Hannah song, but I’m sure you all understand why I made this the necessary album track from this soundtrack. To be honest, everything above as well as the strong production, melody and lyrics made this a strong Hannah 11 contender, and I truly wish it had done better here. But, it was almost top 60, and had been top 30 at one point, so that’s something. Critics said a tiny bit about the song, with just AllMusic saying: “Make Some Noise sound like [a] less-inspired version of the…strummy acoustic ballads that made the first Hannah Montana soundtrack a hit.” Screw you AllMusic. Screw you.
Now it’s your turn. Lowest scorer @iheartpoptarts (4) simply says: What a misleading title. I get where you’re coming from, but the wasn’t the intent of the song. You might like the remix below better. @DJHazey (6.5) has one issue: This has some shining moments and some overall appeal, but the chorus struggles to sell me enough. I think it hits hard perfectly. Is it just me? @pop3blow2 (7) uses a dreaded “g” word: These waltzy ballad songs are usually either amazing to me or come down in the wrong side of generic. Sorry Hannah, but this one is the latter. I’m a basic, generic bitch and I really don’t care.mp3 I have to stan @Entropy’s (8) best friend: I think this was the first Hannah Montana song I heard? I can’t remember exactly because it feels like so long ago, but I remember my old best friend sending this to me on MSN and then I bought the album in HMV and the rest is history. I have a distinct memory of sitting on a beach in Cornwall listening to this song. This person had TASTE. @M24 (8) needs a better memory: Quite empowering. I didn't remember it that well for some reason. But it's pretty good. At least you know it’s good, even though it’s actually amazing. It seems like @savilizabeths (9.5) could use one too though: This is a really beautiful ballad that just makes me feel all the emotions. I loved this one as a kid but somehow forgot about it until this rate. The chorus is such a moment. Catch me shout singing this in my room at midnight while rating these songs. I don’t know what it is but this one is just special to me. Where’s the 10 sis? Also, that’s a whole mood. Finally, @phily693 (10) makes a perfect comparison: Classic uplifting pop rock ballad. Like Kelly Clarkson/P!nk but for kids. Literally two of my favorite artists, period.

I think we're getting down to the more interesting eliminations now, at least some of them. Can't Be Tamed continues to be the album with the strongest hold, while Hannah Montana Forever continues to be the one with the weakest, though Hannah Montana 2 and 3 aren't far behind. Extras are still barely holding on with one song, but how long can that last? Everything else seems to be on pretty equal footing, so it'll be interesting to see what goes next from each. Any predictions or requests for what y'all want out before the top 50?
Okay, ended up passing out at like 6 last night and had a wonderful 12 hours of sleep. Will continue eliminations very soon, starting with 60, and hoping to get 59 and 58 out as well, but I might have to cut down to one a day while I finish a couple other PJ stuff.
The only thing I have to say about this next one is...well...

Clear was written by Shelley Peiken, Xandy Barry and Miley for her debut album Meet Miley Cyrus. They are the same writers for As I Am, which left 11 places ago, at #71, and are the only songs Peiken and Barry wrote for the album. Now, y’all know how I feel about this song. The production just doesn’t work for me on this, especially in context of the album. Sure, it was experimental for her at the time, and I love when Miley gets experimental, but this song just breaks up the flow of the back half of the album. Start All Over into Good & Broken makes a lot more sense to me, so maybe it should’ve been track 9 if they had to include it. In fact, I decided to listen to the last four songs in that order just now, and it worked much better for me, and I will now be using that order from now on, but I still wouldn’t raise my score for this song. It’s my second-lowest score in the entire rate and is one of my least favorite songs by Miley period. My score would actually probably be lower if it weren’t for a couple things, the first being her voice. She sounds great here, staying mostly in her middle and lower register, and imbuing the lyrics with the emotion they need. And I need to give her respect for not trying any vocal affectations that are more typically associated with this genre, which would’ve been annoying and unnecessary. The second thing is those lyrics themselves. I love them here. A lot actually. It’s a great break-up song about finally realizing all the shit your ex put you through and how you pretended to be okay with all of it, and even tells a story across the whole song, starting at Saturday morning and ending on Saturday evening. Knowing how great the lyrics are make the production even more of a disappointment. If this was another pop-rock bop, maybe at a bit more mid-tempo, I’d probably love it to death. Maybe one day the production will grow on me but right now it’s just headache inducing. Literally. I’m never listening to this on repeat again. I should say I added the .25 cause I found myself bopping to it a little, especially in that middle-8, which is actually pretty great, so I figured I should give it points for getting me to move, if reluctantly. So I guess there’s hope for the song yet for me. Thankfully she protected 7-year old me from hearing it by not performing it on The Best Of Both Worlds Tour, so I hadn't actually heard it until like 5 or 6 years ago. Anyway, the only critic who commented on the song was AllMusic, who said “Clear pairs Cyrus’ twangy voice with a laid-back reggae rhythm, making for a slightly strange but sweet combination.” So I guess they liked it.
A few of you tasteless people did too. Let’s start with @savilizabeths (10), who drags me a bit: My close friend @Music Is Life is just plain wrong about this one. It’s one of the best songs on Meet Miley Cyrus. It’s catchy as hell, fun to sing and it bops along in such a chill way. I love the lyrics and the melody. I honestly just can’t explain why I love it so much. All I know is it’s a bop and you’re blind if you can’t see that. I will give you the lyrics and I will give you the melody, cause it’s freaking catchy and gets me singing along reluctantly, but the production is a MESS. "Bop" doesn't always mean a song is good. @M24 (9.25) that I just can’t believe: This one aged nicely. Among the more experimental tracks in this "debut". No it didn’t! How did this age well? HOW?@DJHazey (8.5) spent a lot of time dragging me for not liking this when he didn’t even give it a 10: Dddd, okay so I ended up giving it a score just a bit higher than our host, but we all know that means it's ranked a heck of alot better for me. Doomed to go out much earlier than it should, but I've always loved its laid back reggae style as a nice little switchup. True, an 8.5 for you is very different than an 8.25 for me, but still. And I think it should’ve gone waaaayyyy before this. A couple of you made me laugh. Firstly @pop3blow2 (7): You have to careful when venturing into reggae. It’s hit or miss…. this one, ummm…. Well, there a couple of fun little moments as the song goes on. This one is clearly a miss haha. You could’ve dragged it a little bit more though. And @iheartpoptarts (7), who makes a fair point: Music to sip cocktails on the beach to except not because it’s for 12-year-olds I guess. I guess they could sip virgin pina coladas or something. Finally, lowest scorer @Entropy (1) almost gave this a 0, but didn’t in the end: Absolutely one of the worst Miley songs ever. Me and my old best friend (I feel like I mention my old best friend a lot in these commentaries, but we were obsessed with Miley/Hannah in the early days so I hold a lot of memories around her music) used to talk all the time about how awful it was. If we thought something was bad, we’d used to say “ugh, that’s so Clear”. Everything about it is just dire. That’s amazing and hilarious. And you do, and I’m personally curious to know if you’re still friends with this person.
Here's the song. Feel free to torture yourselves:
And bop to these icons, and be aware that Hayley is releasing a solo project on the 22nd:
Before the rate, I would've bet $100 'Clear' would leave before 'Hoedown Throwdown'. I'm glad I didn't make that bet!
I don't hate 'Clear', I've heard worse songs attempt what it's trying (though I can't think of one off the top my head...ddd) It's the kind of nondescript music that plays in the background at a beach-themed Disney resort or water park. That's kind of a compliment coming from me. It's so weird, it's oddly charming in a way.
The fact that @Music Is Life gave it a 8.25 is sending me. When you do some PJ rate conversions, that more like a 5 or something.

In the grand scheme of things its technically a 5 for me I guess, but I really do love those lyrics, and I think they're worthy of a 0. But the production...well you know how I feel by now. My brain is so weird when it comes to rating. If someone like...I don't know, anyone I don't listen too but also don't hate, like Fergie or J-Lo or someone released the song exactly as it is and I had to rate it, it'd probably get the 5.
Also, give me likes people. The disdain in my write-up was well-thought-out and took work ddddd.
Someone bump the thread up! Hmmmm...let's see, these people haven't popped in in a while: @Hurricane Drunk @M24 @Remorque
I swear I'm not posting another one until I have a new page.
