These Four Walls was written by Scott Cutler, Anne Preven & Cheyenne Kimball for Cheynne's debut (and only) album The Day Has Come, as "Four Walls." I can't really find any info on why Miley decided to cover this, so I can only imagine she heard it at some point, and really connected to the song. Or maybe Scott and Anne, who priduced Miley's cover, and worked on a couple other songs on the album suggested it to her, which is a possibility. A soft-rock mid-tempo, with a BIG chorus with no shortage of drums and guitars, the song is lyrically about being alone and anxious after a break-up that was caused by her. This wasn't a song I knew before first listening to the album in full a few years ago, so it's nothing I've ever really LOVED. Like, it's a great song. I can hear that. I really like the production and the lyrics, but it's always been one of my least favorites on Breakout. Add to the fact that it's a cover and it's just not something I cre a lot about, even if I like it, so I'm perfectly okay with it going now. In fact, I wouldn't have minded if it had gone a little earlier. Sorry. I will say though the bridge goes OFF and might be my favorite part of the song, musically at least. The chorus could fight for it though. Miley included the song in her setlist for the Wonder World Tour, and included the performnce in the DVD filmed at the O2. A few critics had things to say about the song.
Boston.com said, "These Four Walls, written by MTV star Cheyenne Kimball, ....offer [one of] Cyrus's best, most nuanced vocal performances" and
EW also praised her voice saying, "impressively, she’s a dead ringer for the Dixie Chicks' Natalie Maines on the mournful These Four Walls."
The New York Times had the same opinion about this as they did Simple Song,
PopMatters called it "borderline gorgeous" and
Slant Magazine was the opposite, saying it "highlight the often unpleasant nasal quality of Miley's voice". Guess they disagreed with the majority.
Only one of our commenters disliked it, with
@DJHazey (5) saying:
Deemed it "too country" back in the first rate, which is kind of funny because it's not, but it's also not very good either. Oof, well you're right, there isn't a lot of country here. Moving on,
@pop3blow2 (9.2) heard the Dixie connection:
She needs the right song, but girl has some soul when she taps into it. This is like a really Dixie Chicks song. I'd honestly be interested in hearing a bit of R&B/soul from Miley. It's one of the few genres she hasn't really spent time with.
@M24 (9.75) is hear for it, despite the cover factor:
I get my life with the chorus for some reason. I rate this pretty highly as it's a personal favorite, even though it's a cover (right?). Yes. Yes it is. Finally,
@savilizabeths (10) is all Mariah - i don't know her.gif about the original:
Yes, it’s a cover. No, I’ve never bothered to seek out the original. There’s something so dynamic and emotive about this one. Miley performs it as if these were lyrics she’d written and it really grabs me. Even as a kid, I really felt this. It’s such a well composed, written and performed track. The chorus really gets me. It’s quite powerful. Damn. And that bridge! I love a good bridge, guys! Yeah, the chorus/bridge are certainly the best parts.
Go ahead, be reflective with Miley:
