Welcome to my first ever elimination post, not only in this rate but ever. I suppose this is good practice considering my (currently accepting votes) Ariana Grande rate. ANYWAY. Supergirl was written by the frequently mentioned Kara DioGuardi in collaboration with Daniel James who, despite not writing any more Hannah/Miley tracks, is responsible for a lot of songs I really love (Vanessa Hudgens' 'Drive' and Jordan Pruitt's 'One Love' for example). The track was produced by Daniel and his producing partner, who together are known as Dreamlab. It was written for Hannah Montana 3 and first appears in the season 3 premiere, which I'll get back to in a moment. The song has an electro-dance/rock vibe and reflects on the life of fame that Hannah has chosen for herself and the negative side of that life. Being a 'supergirl' isn't always as glamorous as it might seem to all of us on the outside. The season premiere is titled "He Ain't a Hottie, He's My Brother" and it's honestly a favourite of mine. Especially the part in which this song is included where Robbie tests the song out on a very creeped out and uninterested mailman who simply responds with "you're super super weird" before leaving.
As you can see above, I gave this a pretty low score. It's never been a track that I enjoyed much. While I appreciated the lyrical sentiment, I always felt that the actual lyrics themselves were a little juvenile and basic, particularly in the chorus. It didn't help that I'm not always a fan of this kind of electronic type of track with stylistic use of autotune. Admittedly, I am enjoying it more listening to it for this post. Maybe I underscored it a tad. It's got a good melody line and it's a ton of fun. The bridge is definitely my favourite part with the change in instrumentation becoming a little more dramatic with some added string flourishes. The classic trope of the music dropping out when she says 'stop' in the second verse is also cute. I definitely don't see myself returning to it though because it just doesn't click with me. Critics seemed to have a similarly mixed response. About.com called the song "cookie-cutter" but admired the writers for "knowing their target audience and delivering the goods." Entertainment Weekly were generous and compared the sound to Kelly Clarkson. I suppose? Kinda? Not really.. Allmusic called it familiar for Hannah, saying that it sounds a lot like what's come before it.
So, what did you guys think? @DJHazey (9.5) is a big fan and compares it to fan favourite (and disliked by me) album, Can't Be Tamed: Just the title makes me think this will be a major bop because the only other song I know with that title is by an unknown teen queen from Sweden named Ellinor. That one is an all-time favorite. Let me just say this lives up to that hype big-time. Miley delivering the dance-pop goods, with this preview of Can't Be Tamed. Our host is offended that you forgot one of his faves. "Did you really forget that Queen Hilary has a song with the same name?" One of MY faves @pop3blow2 (8) agrees with me on the bridge: Nice little rock-bop. Like the bridge a lot & the production is overall very well done. And our host applauds him on his music description skills. "You really know how to sum things up nicely sometimes." My commentary (4) was far less eloquent than this post, though I was exhausted when I wrote it: I’m not here for it, which is just sorta how I feel about most of the more upbeat later Hannah songs. The chorus melody doesn’t sound that good to my ears and some of the lyrics are a bit dumb, though it’s a Disney Channel song so I guess that’s not it’s fault. I guess I can see why you’d like it, but it doesn’t work for me. I suppose I offended my best friend, because he is not happy with me. "GET TASTE YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE MY BESTIE! The lyrics are amazing you heathen." Whoops, sorry. Love you! More praise for the bridge comes from @iheartpoptarts (6) who seems to agree with my underwhelmed feelings, and mentions the bridge yet again: A lesser version of a song we’ve heard a lot already. The middle 8 is fun, though! Our host is definitely done with our trash opinions, for he has this to say. "*Sigh* I thought you meant like this one more, but I was wrong apparently" Poor guy. We round out the commentary section with @M24 (8.25) dislikes the chorus but seems to enjoy the song overall: A little too much on the noisy side for me to enjoy that chorus. It's still good. While I agree that the chorus doesn't work, our host argues. "It works because of how noisy it is." Whatever works for you xoxo.
Now for some elaboration from our wonderful host.
"When i first heard this, I didn't pay a lot of attention and assumed it was just another song about her bragging how great it is to be famous. But the verses expose that it's about much more than that. It's actually a song about how she needs to be fake happy and totally cool, and how she needs to hide how hard her life is to avoid disappointing her fans, who see her as this role model, and some of them see her as this Supergirl. We see it a lot in so many pop stars: they struggle with mental health, life, and other bullshit that comes their way because they're both human and famous, and that has to be the hardest thing to deal with sometimes. I think there used to be this idea that they shouldn't show how hard their lives can be, because they don't want the world to think of them as weak. They also hate to disappoint us, so they'll follow through on concerts and music because they know that's what we want. But being able to recognize ourselves in, and relate to an artist's music endears them that much more to us, and helps us to remind ourselves that these people are human, and they don't have superpowers. I think over the past two years, Ari has been a great example of this, so I hope y'all will join @savilizabeths rate. All of this can be seen and heard in the lyrics to this song, making it seem like, to me, the darker side of songs like What's Not To Like and The Good Life from the movie soundtrack. And I absolutely love that about this."
Honestly, that write up might actually have made me like the song a little more. His mind! I definitely like the comparison to 'What's Not to Like' and 'The Good Life' from the movie soundtrack, calling it the darker side of those. I'd also like to thank him for shouting out both Ariana herself and my (once again, currently open for votes. Three weeks left!) rate. Join us?
The rest is fairly unrelated, but definitely entertaining. Miley is woken by Lilly from a dream in which Lilly was kissing Jackson. She shares the nightmare to her best friend, shuddering at the thought and is horrifying to hear Lilly's confession that she actually has had a secret crush on Jackson this whole time. At Lilly's request, Miley asks Jackson how he feels about her. At first he's freaked out, but then he warms to the idea and realises he likes her back. Not wanting her brother and best friend to get together, Miley lies to Lilly and tells her that Jackson doesn't like her back. She then tells Jackson that it was a misunderstanding and Lilly doesn't like him at all. The two are completely heartbroken. Soon after, Hannah is invited to bring her group of BFFs onto 'The Mack and Mickey Show' to talk about their friendship and how it keeps Hannah grounded. Lilly (as Lola) and Jackson bicker on the show, forcing Miley (as Hannah) and Oliver (as Mike) to try and mediate and distract from the tension. Eventually, Miley is guilted into telling the two about their feelings for one another on live TV. Once the show ends, Lilly and Jackson are back at home, leaning in to kiss one another. It's at this point that Miley wakes up again and it's revealed that this was all a dream and Lilly remains disgusted by Jackson and can't imagine ever liking him that way.

Dance your heart out to the song again.
Get a taste of one of Hazey's favourites.
Don't forget our hosts fave!
And a personal favourite from the producers of Supergirl (that I definitely like much better!)
