Take Me Along was written by Miley and John Shanks and produced by John for Miley's third album Can't Be Tamed. Musically it continues the electronic arena rock vibe of the rest of the album, with a gorgeous piano melody, lightly strummed guitars and pounding drums. Somewhere in between a bop and a ballad - you can tap your foot and bob your head, but you could also have a good cry to this - it's about how she doesn't understand why this person can't just stay with her, and her with them. Her voice is just beautiful throughout the whole song, conveying the pain and emotion that she feels about the end of this relationship. She has the ability to summon the power she needs in her voice in certain places, while being soft and vulnerable and others. God I love her voice so much. The production is amazing as well. John just always knows what he's doing to be honest. I mean the elements I mentioned help build this sonic world of pain and struggling to understand why this relationship isn't working, nd make you wanna belt out the chorus right along with her. And the vocal melody! How fucking catchy is this? It gets stuck in my head all the time. It just flows together so perfectly, from the thoughtful, quick verses, to the slightly slower, almost anthemic chours. Just completely undeniable. The song itself is one I initally didn't pay much attention to when I first listened to the album - would even skip it on occasion - but with every subsequent listen, I found myself enjoying it more, until I arrived at the point where I feel it's completely necessary, and sometimes am in the mood to seek out and listen to it. Still, it's not one of my all-time faves on an album full of 10s (and 11s) so i figured just below would suffice, and I feel sure about my score today. Now, when it comes to the song's subject matter, it's easy to assume it's about Liam - many songs on the album are, and God knows, I think they were on and off quite often. But I don't think so, and that doubt mostly comes from a certain lyric in the first verse: "I'm always here at the side of your stage." Now, sure Liam is an actor, but he doesn't seem to be a performer in the way that he'd be on a stage. He's never ventured into theater, and he's not a musician or singer. So I feel like it could be about someone else. Looking at her dating history, after she dated Nick and before she dated Liam she dated Justin Gaston, who's apparently an actor, model and singer. So it could be about him, since they dated for a little while and broke up in 2009. All this said, it's possible "stage" is just a metaphor and not meant to be taken literally, but it's fun to speculate. Anyways, critics had barely anything to say about this, since the only one I could find was
AllMusic calling it an "overwrought ballad" but also saying it is a "more organic fit for the singer she has been and could become." Huh. Interesting.
What did y'all have to say about this one? Well nothing truly negative, but mostly nothing over-the-top positive either. All of you seemed to just like it, so I'll just in rising numerical order for this one, starting with
@DJHazey (6.5) who makes me question what he means:
A genuine emotional moment for Miley with a nice beat to match, but just never connects fully. In the same ballpark as the song preceding it actually, but on a lesser scale this time. Ummmm all of Miley's emotional moments are genuine so what makes this different? Next we have
@savilizabeths (7) who might be regretting this lower score now:
I feel like this one could be a grower (along with a fair amount of this album, I guess) but I wasn’t able to give it the time to do that so it gets a seven. So? Was it? And I do hope the whole album grows on you. Next we have
@M24 (7.5) who prefers the first half of the album:
I feel like the album has taken a dive after Permanent December. It's another decent track but nothing more than that. An album of decent tracks is nothing to scoff at though so... Anyway, next we have
@iheartpoptarts (8) who lets us in on her process:
I’m listening to the songs out of order now and this sounds so serious and significant in the midst of all the bubblegum. Well yes, it is a serious song, but at least you liked it! I hope. You really should listen to this album in order though. Finally, we have
@pop3blow2 (9) who has the opposite opinion of
@M24 and makes me go huh?:
The back half of this album is just better to me. Feels more emotional & raw. Oh look, the back half is produced by John Shanks… ddd. His production just worked better with singers like Miley. Rock Mafia didn't really get her voice the same way. I kinda really don't agree, since Rock Mafia produced some of her best songs, including the ones on this album, and Every Rose, Two More Lonely People and Forgiveness & Love are rather emotional. That said, John's work with Miley
is pretty fantastic.
